Gates Kevlar belt ripped with less than 15k miles :(

As I was taking a turn the car just turned off. While I was coasting ( under 10 miles ) I tried to start it up again but to no avail. I'm in the middle of tuning so I presumed that the shut off was normal. When I try to start it, it seemed as if the starter wasn't even turning the motor over like something was jammed it. Took a look around, check level. All was good. Had a 10 mm with me ( good to have on hand) and thought to just take a look at the belt and low and behold I found this. It looks as if the belt is still Intacked And no teeth jumped but well see. I just hope this was the reason why it turned off and not another issue I just found.

So I'm sitting here waiting for a flatbed and decided to let you guys know

Not my day :(

That sucks, just thinking out loud. Where the belt split. That's is the area where the belt guides ( 5 of them) would rub, if the clearance wasn't set correctly. Or it could be a defected belt.

Sorry for your problem, at first thought, I'm thinking install error.

Also guessing the reason the starter stopped is because a valve is stuck in a piston.

Same thing happened to my car. On of the bolts on the center guide fell out and got into a cam gear and jumped time. I was at crusie at 60 and it was like someone pulled all the plugs.
Check your timing first, then do a leak down and prepare to diddly hole for a rebuild.

Well I found the culprit. A bolt got jammed between the pass. intake cam and timing cover. It looks like a timing belt cover bolt, but not sure where from as I still had all the bolts on the cover. I also need to get a new cover, they all have cracks and openings.

Now I need to align pray that it didn't jump.

Wow that really knocked around in there.

LegacyDan 11-03-2012 04:47 PM

i got some metal exhaust cam gears that would look perfect in there!

m sprank 11-03-2012 05:32 PM

Those are ACVS gears Dan.

That does not look good. Pull the belt. Set the crank to TDC. Set the cams to TDC. Install the belt. Perform a compression check. Pray you dont have all zeros. We should all pray he does not have 4 cyl with zero.

BarManBean 11-03-2012 06:18 PM

Subscribed. That's some serious belt carnage there :(

WOW never seen that before in my life. Now your making me want to double check all my bolts. Good luck man.

ibr_adam09 11-03-2012 10:35 PM

Tried to align it while the belt was still on and marks were off on all four cams. Looked like it Jumped big time, so already expecting the worse. I got the belt off and all the plugs. Tomorrow I'll run a compression test. I also bought new plugs just in case. Also already purchased another Gates belt and starting to look into short blocks (suxs big time if I need one)

Found out the bolt came from the waterpump. Must of loosen itself out after 15,000 miles =/

Oh and, some damage on the pass. cam gears. Might need replacing ?

See now this scares me as this is the exact belt and water pump kit i have coming for mine next tues. I know you said you had a bolt come loose, but i'm doing the job myself as i can't afford to have someone else do it, aka shop. I have loctite, should i apply that to all my bolts just to be sure? Other than this, how did the gates belt perform?

plenty of people here have put a 100k on these kits. this was clearly an install error
