how to reduce catless smell?

just bought a legacy, has a cnt catless dp and also Stage 2 cobb OTS map. dont really like the smell when its idling and if i step on it it makes its way into the cabin as well. I dont hear any exhaust leaks but its possible a gasket is loose as well.

from what i gather i might be much better off with a protune and this will help reduce the smell. i was also thinking of having a hi flow cat welded in.

thoughts?

The best case scenario without a cat is the smell of a finely tuned Briggs and stratton lawn mower, and thats with a quality pro tune.

Adding a cat and a tune that isn't overly rich will help.

Street cars should have cats.

Period.

Your best bet is to buy a catted down pipe and sell the one on your car. A protune is always better than an off-the-shelf if you can swing it.

I would not hack up the DP I would get a quality DP with a cat or go back to a stock DP and tune. There is no tune the will improve the catless smell. The only way to stop it would be to seal your cabin from all outside air souces.

see i dont know enough to decipher if its running extra rich or if its a normal catless smell.

How much could i get for a Catless cNT pipe?

stuck686 10-14-2012 10:20 PM

its smells like a snowmobile

liljonson 10-15-2012 05:00 AM

Its normal smell. Its something you deal with if your catless

One of the new Vibrant (GESi) OBDII cats should do. You could get one welded into your existing catless pipe.

mwiener has nothing but great things to say about them.

i have been reading and realize i have the option to install a catted midpipe?

can anyone comment on this and what brand fits welll

TrueWhiteBoy 10-15-2012 09:35 AM

Check out the Reviews section at the top, it covers downpipes and most reviewers will mention fitment.

Oddly enough I only notice the smell when my driver side window is down, when both front windows are down I don't smell it.

Gee most of us old guy's don't even notice the smell. May be that's because our panerts cars didn't have cat's either.

My wagon smells just like my parents 1960's cars. Nothing wrong with that. Look at all us old people...there's nothing wrong with us....lol
