Are these services required?

Hey all! My GF has an 11 Legacy NA and she got this from the sealership...she has the extended warranty and we dont want to void it. They recommend these services:

According to our service files, on your August 13, 2012 service visit, it was recommended that the following service(s) be performed on your 2011 Subaru Legacy:

Fuel Injection Service
Cabin Filter
Throttle Body Service
Power Steering Flush

She has approx 28K miles already...i know i can do Cabin Filter...but how necessary are the other services?

Thanks

You can skip the injector and throttle body service. The cabin filter you said you can do and is easy to check, the power steering fluid should only be flushed if it looks like it needs to be. If not, you can skip all of that, none of this would affect your warranty. When in doubt, check the maintenance requirements in your manual.

If it's not a service listed in factory owners manual, it doesn't need to be performed to remain under factory warranty. Some dealership service departments have many many ways of padding their bottom line at the expense of the uninformed. I put 110k on a Saturn and NEVER serviced the injectors or throttle body. Car always ran perfectly with a plug and wire change every 30k.

Thanks for your inputs!

Unreal. Well.. I guess you can't blame that dealer service department for trying to make a buck.

I bet those completely unnecessary "services" would lighten your wallet by a good $600. Not doing that would never void your warranty.

None of that needs to be done.. pretty much EVER, aside from vacuuming off or putting a new CAF in once in awhile. Sure you can clean your throttle body and change your PS fluid at some point, but on a 2011 with 28K miles? You gotta be kidding me. LOL!!!

I would say that you won't need a fuel injector service until after five years or 80000 miles. Same with the power steering.

I even bought her HID's as a present and then figured what a PITA it is to install...not like my 4th gen...so easy....i figured with the 5th gens it may have req'd more maintenance lol... damn stealership got her all worried...sounds good to me...thanks all!

They definitely have a stupid front fascia and headlight placement design.

The hids might void part of the wiring harness, but those other services are bunk. At 30k we do:

Oil change
Trans and diffy change
Trans filter if spin on type
Air filter
Plugs on NA
Brake fluid flush

Thanks Mike!

Actually her headlight bulb went out and was able to get it replaced at MidCity Bermans Subaru, they are so dumb they used a brighter bulb on one side and didnt bother to replace the other bulb. Went back a few days later so they can fix their mistake, what an inconvenience.

I cant believe the 5th gens are bigger and the wheels shrank to 16's vs my 08 LGT with 17's...but i do love the ride quality...feels like im floating in it...and the rolling resistance is nice.

Sweet I will be able to do the 30k service on her car...

I could be wrong, but doesn't "fuel injector service" = dump in bottle of $5 GumOut and charge $40?

Yes as real fuel injector service costs a lot more than $40.

TheOneDoubleN 10-09-2012 04:05 PM

A real fuel injector service involves physically cleaning the intake tract with something like seafoam, and will often be coupled with a chemical added to the oil and fuel tanks. Regardless, this is elective service, certainly not something that would be required at all within the first 100k mi or 5-7 years.

When I think of real fuel injector service that is not what I think of. I am talking about pulling the injectors and having them ultrasonically cleaned with all new components installed. I just had some Bosch ones done for the Z.

Yes but no dealership actually does that, I'm only referring to what a dealership's "fuel injector service" entails here.
