Winter Tire Sizes 2012 LGT
Ok, I posted this in the winter tire thread and haven't gotten a response.
I've done a number of searches and maybe I'm missing it. I see a bunch of reviews of snow tires, but no one seems to mention the size they use. I have a 2012 LGT, looking for snow tires. Tire rack recommends 225/50R17's, but I'm curious as to whether or not we can run 225/45R17's or 55's. Anyone have any experience with those sizes? Thanks! |
When I got new rims for some summer tires, I wanted to use the stock rims for my winters... Ended up getting 215/45/18s (Blizzak LM-60s, same that Rogue77 got), which although a bit narrower, fit the rims just fine. If you aren't limited to 18" rims, I think you have many more options with 17"s... but I don't know any specifics about other sizes...

Stay away from 45s for winter. 55s may fill up the wheel wells too much. Snow will fill the wells and not have anywhere to go.

Went through winter with a 55 series sidewall with a winter autocross session thrown in there. 215/55/17 to be exact.
(Pic Here http://i1054.photobucket.com/albums/...r/IMG_7670.jpg ) If you consider the fact that I was lowered, then I would say a 55 series sidewall wouldnt have any negative side effects in terms of snow buildup. It is also very close to my 245/40/19 over all diameter for my summer set, which is a very accurate overall diameter for the speedometer. |
Good info

I have 215/55/17. I got the tires and wheels from discounttiredirect. I recommend checking them out. Cheaper shipping than tire rack.

on 17", the 45s may be be a harsh ride. My winters are 225/45/R18 and they are Ok on RCE blacks. A little more sidewall would be better.
Tirerack now has 17" steelies. The 215/50s should be a nice ride and others have indicated no problems with 215/55s. |
I will be running 215/55-17 winter tires on my 2013 2.5 Premium.
They finally got it right and do not offer the Premium with 16" alloys. The stock 17's will become my winter setup as I already have 18's for the other seasons. |

I run what Subaru puts on the Limited 17" wheels. 225/50/17 and as you can see I got them on 4th gen wheels. The sizing is perfect relation to the factory 18s.

I've been using 215/55-17's for the past 3 years with no issue. Car was always stock ride height though.

Do you use 18's for the summer? Or did you go up?

Also just noticed the OP is from WNY. Where are you JMules? |
I run OEM size winter tires on the OEM rims but I get a lot less snow down here.

Awesome info, thanks everyone!
