No Power Steering

1 Attachment(s)
Drove home today and lost power steering the belt made a loud squeaking noise got home open the hood and notice the serpentine belt is lose. I found a bolt by the alternator that looks like something fell off of it. I attached a picture of this please help. I'm not much of a car mechanic. I have 142,000 miles on it 1998 Subaru legacy

That bolt that your holding is the P/S belt tensioner bolt. Tighten that bolt down until the belt is firm. Then the tighten the little bolt underneath and that will secure the tensioner, so it doesn't come loose. Then you should be ready to go.

i can not get that small bottom bolt back into the hole on the alternator it seems like it is too short.

F1inspiredLGT 09-21-2012 05:12 PM

Did the bolt snap? Look through the hole on the bracket and see if you see the other half.

staggs0288 09-21-2012 05:13 PM

how long is this bolt spouse to be this one is about a 1 3/4 but i wonder if it snaped the end of the threads dont look clean it seams like it should be a two inch bolt

staggs0288 09-21-2012 05:14 PM

its clean inside the thread housing i think it snapped

F1inspiredLGT 09-21-2012 05:14 PM

Oh wait, that shorter bolt needs to go through the long slot and attach to a nut on the back side. Maybe you're missing the nut on the back?

staggs0288 09-21-2012 05:16 PM

i see no nut the bolt will touch the threads and it wont screw in it seems like it should be longer where can i get a replacement bolt i have an autozone near my house.

F1inspiredLGT 09-21-2012 05:19 PM

Maybe so then. Hard to tell without seeing the backside.

This may help too.

I just went out an measured the bolt, it is an M8x1.25 and about 1.75" long

staggs0288 09-21-2012 06:27 PM

i went to autozone and it appears that the threads backed out on the screw. The guy stated i need to tap it out and re thread it with a bigger bolt so i will try that when i can looks like i have to drive my other car lol thanks for you help

staggs0288 09-21-2012 06:43 PM

Update: the bolt did come out of the screw hole i guess i need to drill the hole bigger and rethread for a bigger bolt.

You don't need to rethread a bigger bolt necessarily. You can get thread kits that will match your original bolt. You do have to drill the hole out though.
