Removing glove box weight(Weight reduction)

I've always been curious about how much that weight weighs because it always seems to cause the glove box to "thud" down on that string.

How to:
1. Remove glove box per "cabin filter replacement" how to's.
2. Unscrew the two Philips head screws on the back of the glove box.

3.Pry glove box apart, it should be painless.
4. It should look like this:

Remove the 3 center Philips on the black plastic piece(white piece will not be removed).
5. Remove black plastic handle piece and weight.
6. Replace handle in original spot and continue to put the glove box back on.

According to my super accurate bathroom scale weighing method, the piece is ~2.5lbs.

Gonna do this tomorrow. Had no idea there were weights in the glove box cover lol

Why are their weights in it??

dr_sharp 06-14-2012 09:44 PM

I believe it is so it will open more quickly?

Thanks for the tip; I just did it.

This is the cabin filter replacement how to that the first step is referring to http://legacygt.com/forums/showthrea...elp-93471.html

Additional tip: when putting everything together, don't forget to pull the retraction string back out, or you'll have to redo the whole process.

Also note that you'll have to pull down on the glove box now for it to open. It doesn't matter to me, but if you're constantly opening it, this might be a nuisance.

Finally got around to doing this + cabin filter. I also removed a steel bracket that seemingly served no purpose. I'll try to get a picture and post it when I weigh both of these.

Just got rid of mine. It weighs exactly 2 lbs 9.2 ozs.

Guess what? The asshole that owned it before me removed the cabin air filter.

I kept wondering why there was always this crap that would blow into my eyes and make me blind everytime I turned the blower on.

If they had no intention of putting the damn filter in, why did they even bother to put the slot for it?

Since 7 lbs is commonly equated to 1 hp (can't remember if this was for motorcycles or cars), then you just gained about 1/3 hp. Woot!!!
