Air Box Canister

1 Attachment(s)
I was putting on a K&N filter on my 2010 Legacy so I decided to pull out the whole thing to make sure the fit was right.

I found attached to the air box this white canister. I thought it might be for humidity but the fact that it does not have any drain doesn't make sense.

Anybody know what this thing is for?

Just a resonator?

What does it do as a resonator?

Helps to control the amount of air flowing into the car and reduce wind noise. Not sure what people here have done with it but there are talks of removing it for other cars in other forums.

General consensus is keep the airbox. The white jug is a silencer so it's optional for N/A. Not sure for the LGT.

I didn't believe it either, until I read this from MickeyD, a very respectable tuner:

"The silencer is a different issue. Taking out the silencer can cause MAF oscillations at 2500-2700 rpm in 5th gear under full boost. This is only an issue with small turbos such as the VF40 because large turbos can't build enough boost in this rpm range to make it a problem."

Now, given this is with a Stage II map - it still shows that the silencer DOES have an affect on the performance of the engine.

I'm throwing my silencer back in when I go Stage II today...

I removed my resonator with the thought that I would eventually install an intake funnel...http://www.rallysportdirect.com/HKS-...-STI-2008-2011

I haven't installed the funnel yet but I can tell you that I've had the resonator off for about 8 months now with no problems. There is no noticeable performance improvement, besides maybe a little more sound from the intake. Keep in mind this is on a 3.6, so as minuccims said this is probably completely different for a GT.

That's the auxiliary engine air supply in the event you go under water.

J/k.. Like said, most likely an intake silencer / resonator. Although I gotta admit, I've seen tons of them- none ever looked like a windshield-washer fluid bottle.

Thanks to all for the feedback. I'm wondering how the design works as a silencer? The opening is ahead of the filter so I would imagine the filter would have smoothened out the sound waves and pressure already. I'll try to google it.

Keep in mind that taking the resonator off can possibly screw with the maf sensor reading at certain airflows... only very slightly though.

My silencer is off and I have the HKS funnel piece, car was pro-tuned without any MAF issues.

Oddly enough my tuner had some issues with a brand new STI where the owner had removed the silencer, was throwing the MAF off.

Ohhhhh... I forgot about that funnel...
