2009 3.0R Strange Noise

I've been listening to a strange low frequency rumble noise coming from (what sounds like) the engine bay. At first, it was an infrequent noise that was pretty faint and I could only hear it when I put the car in drive. I checked the serpentine belt and there were no cracks--pulleys seemed fine. I could hear the noise inside the car, but for the life of me I couldn't hear it when I stuck my head under the hood (and I mean way under--like my forehead down by the front diff dip stick) to see if I could hear something--anything.

Now, it's gotten louder and I can hear it constantly. When I put the car in park, it's pretty faint, but I can still hear it. When in drive or reverse, it's prominent. When braking, the noise gets louder and then quieter when I come to a full stop. I've stuck my head in the engine again, checked the belt again, etc., and I can't figure out where the noise is.

Could it be the transmission or the front diff?

The car just reached 45K miles and I want to know what the hell is going on. If anyone has any ideas, or if you all need more information, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

If it is only happening when driving it sounds like something in the transmission or something in the drive line. What does the tranny fluid look like? Does it still look clean or does it smell burnt? If it only has 45k I'd have the dealership look it over sometime.

I'm also having a weird noise with mine. It's mainly when the engine is cold, when I put the car in reverse and very lightly hit the gas I hear this odd metal rattling type sound. Same for if I just put the car in drive and lightly tap the pedal I hear it. During normal acceleration it's no where to be found though. Last time I was at the dealer they said they couldn't recreate it and now it's back. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks

Checked the tranny and front diff fluid. Both were light brown in color and clear (I know that the transmission fluid needs to be red, and I'm planning on changing it soon). Both were registering full as well.

Kramm, I'm having the opposite problem. The noise isn't apparent when the car is cold, but only after it's warmed up for a little while.

I'm going for a ride with a gearhead/ mechanic buddy of mine who's way better diagnosing things like this than I am. So I'll be back with what he says later on.

Just to note that the transmission fluid should be changed every 30K. So if there was no major service done at 30K then you are due for a bit more. Stock Subaru fluid is more brown than most other transmission fluids. Thing is the transmission shouldnt be making any noise even with old fluid. I would check your power steering level and make sure it is not low (been seeing a lot of that lately).

If you are having someone look at the car make sure they know Subarus. They are not as easy as some other cars and really should be taken to a specialist.

Never thought of power steering, I'll check it today at lunch. Also, my buddy isn't so much looking at it as he is listening to it to see if we can pinpoint where the noise is coming from and go from there.

Thanks for tossing your hat into the ring on this.

Getting this fixed under warranty today. It's a loose heat shield on the catalytic converter for future reference if anyone has this issue. Would have cost $450, but I had mentioned the issue to the dealership before my warranty is up so it'll be fixed for free.

Thanks for the update. Something to look out for.

i believe I have the loose heat shield rattle going on in my vehicle as well. I'm still under warranty so I hope its covered. Did you by any chance get your heat shield fixed, kramm?

Yup, it was fixed and I no longer hear the rattling sound. You should be fine.

Just to get this clarified, I own a 2008 Legacy and purchased the extended warranty which is up in 2014. But when I went to the Stealership I was told that loose heat shields were only covered during the first 3 yrs/ 36000 miles. So I'm assuming they're bullsh*tting me?

Which extended warranty? If it is a 3rd party warranty probably isn't covered. If it is the Subaru Added Security Bumper to Bumper Extended Warranty it *Should* be covered.
