Legacy GT Built Motor Thread - post up what you're doing to your engine

10/26/2012***Long overdue for a proper update*** Since his name is here I guess the cats out of the bag. Garage Tuning just plain sucks...

Battle with engine issues is captured on NASIOC. I just started a new build thread there and I'll just link to it instead.

Just asking... there is one on Nabisco and IWSTI, us LGT'ers could use one.

Car is w/ Kevin at Garage Tuning. Dropped it off last weekend and it should be ready by the 23rd.

As you all know motor was burning about 1qt/400miles and idle was rough. Large cloud of smoke under load over 5k rpm (reduced significantly after the AOS install)...anyway the parts list:

Mahle 9:1 pistons
+ machine work
ACL rod/mains
ARP head studs
full oem gasket kit
Gates timing belt
new pullys/tensioners/water pump
11mm STI oil pump
Killer B Oil Pickup
new NGK plugs
Mahle oil filter

He is also installing the HKS Camp II with oil pressure and boost as additional sensors.

And the MOST important thing... I'm driving a FORD FOCUS rent a car!! Woo Hoo!!

Nice...I was going to make my own build thread but I'll just add to this one.

My build:
CP 100mm 8.2:1 pistons
Eagle Rods
Cosworth bearings
ARP Headstuds
Covert Performance Oil Pick up
Brian Crower Valves(stock sized)
Port and polished heads
Polished crank(rebalanced with rods)
New oil pump, water pump, plugs, belts, gaskets, timing kit etc.

Unfortunately, I wasn't looking to spend this much so I'll be limping around on a base map/break in map until I can(afford to) get retuned. On the brighter side, this motor should be good for 500+whp reliably.

Some phone pics:

I had an ADD moment and didn't get the pics of the pistons in the block. I got caught up in conversation and I didn't get a pic. Heads are going on today and I should have the car back Friday or Monday.

(sorry Drew, if this completely jacks your thread. I'll remove if it was your intention of making your own).

lol awesome motor!! let us know how she runs!.

My LGT should have the motor in by then end of the week, but it's on the other side of the country and I've been very busy to do anything besides fund the build. Here's what I know so far:

08-10 STI shortblock w/nitrided crank
EFILogics top secret forged 99.5mm Pistons
OEM LGT Gasket Kit
Killer B Ultimate Oil Pickup
ARP head studs
Gates racing T328RB timing belt
NGK LFR7AIX one step colder spark plugs
'08 STi Oil Pump - 11mm
Idler Pulley EJ20/25 (black bearing - heavy duty)
Subaru gold oil filter

I'll pick the car up, dyno tuned and broken in, some time in late November.

CAN'T WAIT!

This is what we need so lets keep it going!

Maybe a mod can help us rename the thread. This is becoming more popular so we might as well have it all under one roof.

We need more user experiences, links to their build posts, advice on parts, builders, building in general, and break-in.

If you have a built motor to talk about post it here!

So, anyone willing to post a ROUGH estimate of cost and probability you'll pass smog :-)?

I'm guessing you're all all 5/6MT?

Mine was somewhere in the $6k range but I had to get all new valves and head work. I'm not from CA but I don't see how a built motor wont allow you to pass smog. And yes I'm 5MT.

As for break in, my engine builder and my tuner both suggest a gradual break in. Has anyone actually broken in an engine hard(moto style)? My buddy with a turbo E36 M3 did a hard break in but I'm not sure its an apples to apples comparison.

FRKevin (or whatever it is:lol:) should make an appearance sooner or later and he's 5EAT.

that looks similar to my built block I did last summer. But I had Manley 100 mm pistons and upgraded rods. Of course it was in my 08 STI, so had a new crankshaft. 816 cc Perrin injectors, Walbro FP, OEM gaskets except for the 100 mm head gasket. We ported the heads a bit and also cleaned up as much as we could. Had I known at the time we had to mess with the heads, I'd have upgraded the cams and valves too.

*edit* here's some pix

5mt here.

This build going to end up costing me ~$7k, but there are many other things I neglected to mention like motor mounts, many OEM parts, fluids, dyno tune, etc.

That's a pretty pricey upgrade for not too much gain, isn't it?

bnguyenbb6 10-13-2010 06:04 PM

Head work is not necessary unless you are already in there. In my case, I needed all new valves and it was only $200 more for porting and polishing. I'm still on my stock cams. It also shouldn't really shine until I throw on a bigger turbo.

AKLGT 10-13-2010 06:04 PM

oh and since I was in an absolute time crunch, we ended up having to pay extra for the tech's hours. Looking back now, we would have been able to do this ourselves, but we didn't know how or have the time. The motor's no longer in the car, it's in a crate waiting to go into the 99 RS project car I sold to the ex. However, last winter we rebuilt my OEM motor to factory specs and after we did all that, we agreed we could have built the motor earlier that year. :( Hindsight is always 20-20. After all parts, shipped, etc tech hours was just shy of $8K.

well, not sure on the LGT, but Rob at AMR was getting 50+ whp gains plus major torque. My goal was to make it 11 sec grocery getter on a TMIC. but..... life happens and I went a different route.

great thread idea....it gives us all more inspiration
