2010 Legacy 3.6 burning oil. Anybody else have the same issue?

I have a 2010 Legacy 3.6R Limited that I put about 1000 miles a week on.

According to the owners manual, they say to change the oil every 7500 miles and that is what they will pay for with their so called "all maintainance included for 24,000 miles or 2 years", yet at 6000 from my last oil change, the low oil light came on. I took it to the dealer and discovered that Subaru finds it normal for that engine to burn up to a quart of oil per 1000 miles. Mine was actually 1.5 quarts low.

Has anybody else had their v6 burn oil like that?

Daniel

You get free maintenance? WHATT!!

I don't know.. Dealer never told me anything and I never check..

I have to ask, are you really pushing the 7500 miles per oil change? It doesn't surprise me that the oil breaks down before around service interval. Also we have a horizontal 6 not a v6.

!!!!

Dealer changes the LGT's oil (no charge) every 3000 miles. Recommend getting oil change on the 3.6R or 2.5i no more than 5000 miles. When ever I have gone past that on my 2007 OB 2.5i, the oil seems to break down and it's half to a full quart down. At less than 5K, the oil is still a good color. 7500 is just too long.

This has been a great forum, thanks to all. Happy 4th to each and every Red White and Blue Subie owner!!

My dealer gives me free oil changes if I pay for 'scheduled' maintenance, we'll see how much they want to charge me for that (I just broke 7000 miles). They want oil changes at 3750 miles. I pay extra for full synthetic.

With my Ford and full synthetic I would go 5000 miles between changes.

I've lost maybe 6 oz over the last 3000 miles.

Regardless of the OCI in your warranty schedule (even if you have a 2/24 'free' service window), the owner is expected to check the oil level on a regular basis and add oil when needed. How often do you check your oil level? You should have caught this well before you tripped an oil light.

All manufacturers pretty much draw the line at 1qt per 1000mi when determining whether oil consumption is excessive. Yes it sucks and they absolutely do it to limit warranty claims for internal engine repair, but it is the norm. You'll likely need to lawyer up if you want them to do something at your rate of oil burn.

How often do you check your oil? Is it possible that it's been low since the last oil change and you just didn't notice? Perhaps it started a quart low and simply burned another half quart over the past 6000mi...

If you think you have an issue, start checking and logging your oil level on a regular basis. If you do have an issue, check your PCV. A stuck or leaky PCV can cause oil consumption. Also, a heavier oil can reduce the rate of oil burn. With the miles you run per week and the hot climate in San Antonio, I would consider a slightly thicker oil anyway - at least during the summer. Try a 0w40 syn if you're inclined, but don't expect the dealer to offer it for free.

Either way, good luck!

3.6 also burning oil

To all you losers who are blaming the victim, you're clueless. THIS IS A SUBARU PROBLEM.

I'm also burning at least a quart between oil changes. I've changed the oil between 3k and 5k. It has done this since the day I bought it. It now has 24k miles on it. When the dealer said he thought the oil was breaking down, I paid $160 to have the old oil flushed and replaced with Subaru synthetic. 2k later, the oil light comes on.

Subaru - the dealer and the company - tell me that using a quart every 1200 miles is acceptable. I call bulls&# on that.

I check the oil every time I get gas. It will be full for hundreds of miles and then be down a quart then next fillup. It has happened twice after a trip to Boston, about 3.5 hours from here.

Anybody who knows why or any help anyone can offer dealing with Subaru will be greatly appreciated.

Might be just me but entering an owners forum with your first post calling people Losers might not help get you information or assistance from its community of members.

Just a thought. Hope you get your problem solved.

If the shoe fits

Thanks for the advice. To clarify, I didn't call everyone a loser, just those trying to somehow blame Daniel for his Subaru burning oil.

Oh yeah

Excuse me for being sensitive, but I'm just a little bit angry for having paid $31,000 for a car and having to drive around with a quart of oil in the trunk like I did when I drove a $300 beater with 225k on the meter.

This would piss me off as well and I wouldn't purchase a new car if I knew it burned any significant amount of oil between required OCI's. I don't consider 1 quart to be acceptable in 3k miles let alone 1k. My 08 isn't using oil and it's stage 2 and driven aggressively.

When I had a 95 Saturn SL2 with 180k miles on it, it used a quart every 1200-1500 and I found that acceptable and kept oil in the trunk.

My 3.6 is great. No consumption at all. I would bitch like hell to Subaru.

I haven't noticed burning oil on my gt, but I'll keep an eye on it. I just got something in the mail that mentioned all oil change intervals for all models on the 2011 MY is 7500 miles (see attached).

Am I reading that right? Does it really say every 7500 for turbo models?
