A build thread to mix things up around here....

build thread...

this is hopefully my end all build to keep me plenty happy. i know the components themselves have made me happy with how clear they are with the ability to pack a good mid bass punch.

so gear list...

eclipse avn 5495 navi unit

audison bitone processor

audison lrx 1.400 (2)

audison lrx 2.250

audison lrx 4.300

focal k2 gear krx3 3 way component set

image dynamics idmax 12 dual 4 ohm (2) version 2 subs

optima yellow top (main under hood)

stinger 1500 amp dual post (rear/secondary)

stinger cage fans (2)

stinger distribution blocks, wire, signal cables blah blah blah

alright first up some photos of the gear... some already in my car, and the four channel amp i picked up used later down the line.

now when i went to install this in the legacy i ran into a few issues. first up the 6.5 mid does NOT fit in the front door. its magnet is too damn big. if you use a 3/4" spacer it'll still hit the window when it comes down. you've gotta bump to a 1 1/4" spacer, which will give you an 1/8th inch behind the magnet to clear for glass. problem still is now that the speaker itself hits the door panel lol. so i temped them up in the rear doors to just get by. then i used the focal pods until i could go ahead with picking up some extra a pillars and tear them up instead of my originals.

pods...

now the way these things work is you can run a 4 channel amp to the two inputs on the cross over to biamp them and drive all 6 speakers. however i swapped plans. my 2 channel runs my 6.5's and my 4 channel runs my 3 and 1 inch pairs.

next up started laying out how i wanted my amps (while some where connected lol) which became a cluster of crap and looked terrible but was enough to get the basics down and let me know what i needed to draw up a plan. which i handed to a friend of mine who has tig welding skills and access to a high end mig welder that turns on and off stupid fast to weld aluminum.

amp lay out

sub lay out

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/Seth1784/Audio%20Emporium/Audio%20Build/IMG_4733.jpg

(other sub same on the other side)

next came the amp rack itself...

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee200/Seth1784/Audio%20Emporium/Audio%20Build/rack3.jpg

which wasn't done... but was enough for us to test fit and do trimming where needed and adjustments on the rails (were off)

which then brought us to the final product...

amp rack as it is now, done and fully in place with everything attached to it. i'll have to exchange out one wire (want rid of a 9 conducter i am not taking advantage of, and one other speaker wire added on for the second sub)

the speaker rings themselves were a royal pain in the ass... i've got a router tool that helped but was still a pain in the butt.

other then all that i'm running a test box under my legs (right in front of the front seats) that house the 6.5" speakers to see if i like them there. if so i'll glass up something with them. they sound damn good where they are but they're not the most comfortable options right now. i don't want to tear up my door panels making some bastard child of glass and plastic or i'd have done that already. i also hate kicks so i really don't want to do that either... i'm out of ideas there.

next thing i'm going to do is glass the a pillars this weekend and then body fill sometime soon after... i'll then send them to a shop in town that'll dye match my interior and cover them to look factory. fingers crossed that turns out well... after that i'll focus on whatever i'm going to cover my amp rack with... i have a few ideas but i need it to support weight and then also cover everything. not looking to show, looking to hide...

birmy... no problemo, know you kept asking me for a build thread sooooo figured i'd pm you lol.

matt... thanks man, i hope it turns out alright. i started tearing up the last build over a year and a half ago lol so we'll just have to hope i stay on top of this thing now.

shooting for the march time frame but i dunno how accurate that'll be.

Nice Gear-You're going to love that Bitone,

Curious on your Magnet Dilemma. I'd like to get my HAT's in my doors, but they are deep. You noted that A 3/4" Spacer Would work W/out coming in contact W/ the Door Panel, but 1 1/4" would not work. Have you tried 1"? -I am debating whether or not to throw them in quick or wait until Spring & just Glass up a set.

I take it you plan on using Grills up Front for your Mid & Tweet?

fc... yea i've been running the bitone for a good uhhhhhhhh 3 or 4 years now? lol i bought it when the thing came out. before that i ran the fosgate 360.2 (hated it) and i also tried the alpine h650 (pile of shit my god lol).

on the spacers.. i tried 3/4, 1 and 1 1/4... the 3/4 and 1 were both still making contact with the window. the 1 inch was DAAAAAMN close, it was enough that when the window would come down it would just drag along the magnet hahahahah. if you could deal with fubaring your window and hearing crrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrsh every time you rolled down the window then it might work lol.

for the 1 and 3's i'm not sure what the plan is, i've never made a pillars... i may just run them how they are without anything on see what i think, if that doesn't fly then get someone to make something but right now the plan is just throw them in and go. for me i drive once or twice a week, i actually walk to work so my car is a garage queen and i'm not too worried about people seeing the speakers in the pillar just yet.

wang lung... i really dunno man, when i had the 360.2 i had modded the controller to fit in the ashtray but the bitone is too damn big to do that, so i'm not sure what i'll do. i'm tempted to hit up subaru for another shifter bezel and hack that up (which is probably what will happen. and just have it between the shifter and the si drive knob. that's kind of bottom of my list to do right now though hahahahah.

As far as OEM Processor Upgrades, it all depends on what Features you want. From my Experience Both the Alpine Modules & the 360.1 & .2 are worthless if you are Going "Active."

3-Ways can be a B*tch to set up. Have you checked your PLD's? -I have a feeling if you leave them "as is," you're going to have a tough time battling Reflection. Get them in the Pillars:) Also, I am only assuming you will be using Polyester. You may want to Drill some Holes to help the Resin Adhere. Polyester has a tough time adhering to Plastics, but maybe you have some Epoxy on hand

when i had the 360 and the h650 i had some boston components (the pro's) and i just hated the processors for different reasons. the h650 i hated how you couldn't change shit on it, and i didn't at all care for the set it made for my car. the 360 i didn't care for because i had one of the first revs and it would not talk to a laptop period. if you were able to get it linked you'd make one change and it'd lock it out. so i had to tune on a pda and that's just a nightmare trying to pick one band out of 20 to 30 on a little 3 inch diagonal screen. quality from fosgate like always i suppose.

for right now... i am only semi active. my 6.5 is active while my 3 and 1 are not. personally i don't know anyone around here that has ran active and just reading what folks use and such for settings isn't enough to make me feel comfortable enough to throw a 1000 dollar plus set of components into a "test" lol. so instead of screwing up royal i'm letting the cross over do the work for me and surprisingly enough i'm pleased with how they sound. they get plenty loud and i don't even have them pushed as hard as they can go (amp and processor).

appreciate the advice for the pillars, i actually didn't read this until i got home today... and well i already glassed them lol. the fleece did start to lift in a few places but it's not a big issue i can fix it. the chop mat i picked up was all sorts of stiff and wouldn't separate like the crap i used about 6 or 7 years ago lol. so i pretty much hit the spots where i felt would be weakest and fingers crossed the fleece and resin will hold up alright. i figured since the 3 and 1 don't weigh anything it should be alright... if it was a sub then i'd worry.

i've ran the focals in those little pods sitting on my dash for about a year because i was too lazy and unmotivated to finish my install lol. they didn't sound bad there, you'd notice a few things here and there... but it was never anything terrible. lately i've noticed some shitty reverberations or odd ass sounds coming from the 3's and nothing has really changed (started a few months before i restarted the install). i may have to send the things in if they still sound like they do after they are in the pillars. i've got a feeling it's the pods themselves causing the problem, but at the same time i doubt focal would send those out if they were bad for the speakers.

oh and on the bitone, almost all my eq stuff is straight up flat... i really love it. the only thing that's not right now is the sub and that was just to squeeze out a bit more umph from the audison amp to just run the single 12 for a while.

yea see "starting points" ahhahahah, i just didn't want to deal with messing a little here and there and not having even the slightest idea if i was making things better or worse.

my mat was 1.5oz chop... i have no idea why but some reason it was really really damn stiff. pretty sure it came from select products, but sheesh... most of it didn't want to bend and flow like i'd want.

well went and checked on the pillars, figure about 48 hours is enough to cure for sure. (ha) they were really damn hard lol, felt like i could use it as a good club if need be. now i'll have to sand out the crap that fell into the speaker holes and still waiting on the duraglass to show up. probably going to call tomorrow see if i can get a quote on dye match with covering them. i'm sure some interior shop would do a far nicer job wrapping them then i would.

cloth of some sort, i'm going to see what that apulstry shop can do with something to match the interior. i kept the cloth that i pulled off of the a pillars (plus i still have my factory ones, i bought some used ones from a wrecked legacy) so i'll see what they can come up with for color match and something close to the oem cloth pattern. to me that'd be ideal that way the crap doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

well hell... duraglass hasn't made an appearance at the shop yet, so it may not make it tomorrow. not sure if i want to start on my trunk since i'm still not 100% sure what i'd like to do for a cover. guess i could go ahead and get the back of the sub boxes molded but not sure if i wanna do that either lol. hell... what to do, what to do...

  • 2 weeks later...

welp picked up the duraglass friday... sanded down one over the weekend. i didn't get to the other. ran into a problem.... the bottom of the pillar has a little set in area that i thought i was covered with, well i screwed that up. go figure first time a pillar job didn't go as well as i'd like ahhahahah. i'm trying to figure out exactly what i want to do. i'm thinking i'll trim off the excess at the bottom of the pillar since it'll be unseen anyways then body fill it closed. it wont really cause an issue i can think of structurally but since i've never done this i dunno if it's a wise idea.

anyways... photos of progress...

now i'm not done sanding this one down, had a friend show up for some shooting of guns (which is more fun then sanding). this also was my crappier pillar when i glassed it lol. so if any of them look like crap it'll be this one. i think i've got most of the problem areas covered up well enough no one will notice though. now just fixing the damn thing so it'll fit in place and then cover.

turkey... hahahha same, bought that v2 ages ago and fell in love with it. just an fyi if you don't keep up on audio... one of the original makers of ID branched off to start his own business. he posts on the diy forum and i'm looking forward to seeing what he comes up with. he claimed it'll be complete old school style goodness.

Very cool! I was into car audio pretty heavy 10 years ago and was the ICE moderator over at Altimas.net before it became nissanclub. I ran an IDSPL (among others) back in the day but always coveted the maxes. I'd still love to build a system with "older school" stuff from that time period. I did pick up a minty 1100w Memphis Belle last summer, so who knows. :)
