"Growling" noise

Recommended Posts

3.0 engine/5eat car. Looking for ideas- my car has developed a very distinct "growling" noise once fully warmed up at idle, either in park, neutral or drive. The noise does increase in pitch/intensity with engine speed changes, and fades away (becomes unnoticeable due to road sounds) once moving. It is slowly but surely getting louder.

The sound is very distinct from inside the car- and seems to come from the left/front/center of the car. Whats interesting is that I cannot pick it up from outside of the car- either from the engine bay or from underneath.

Being a 3.0, it's not the usual cam chain drive noise. The power steering pump (always been noisey) and alternator do make some sound, but neither matches what I'm hearing.

Looking for ideas or anyone else's previous experiences -TIA!

Did this happen suddenly? It almost sounds like an intake leak from what you describe, but the location seems to be wrong, though I'm not nearly as familiar with the layout of the 3.0 compared to 2.0 and 2.5 motors. Also, it wouldn't seemingly matter if it were warmed up or not for an intake leak.

Have you checked for exhaust leaks? It could also have something to do with the timing chain and or timing chain guides. I've seen the guides on the Nissan v6 motors have issues before although those motors aren't related to the H6 at all.

Thanks for the reply Mike!

No indication of an exhaust leak - I was under the car (with it running). Heat shields are secure, too. Couldn't hear anything through all of the normal noises. Ditto for in front, regarding the chains.

The car did this last year, too; it went away. Almost a year later it comes back- and now it's gone again...

This is with two different oils in the engine. Amsoil XL 10-30 and M1 0w-40 SN (current).

Odd that I can only hear it from inside the car. Some thoughts that I had were a possible oil control valve (back of cylinder head), torque converter or transmission pump issue. All difficult to test; I'm not ready to try the dealer yet, no faith that I won't get the run-around.

As an aside-

the M1 0w-40 oil is the only oil that I've tried so far that has given me zero consumption at 2000 miles. No clear reduction in gas mileage due to being "too thick" either.

I would wait until I got CELs or the noise becomes more prevalent. If you have a local subie shop that can take a look at it they may notice something on the spot that could be causing the issue.

For posterity-

The noise was the fuel line pulse damper. Installed a new one today, after waiting out a national back-order. No more indistinct "buzz" sound in the car.

Got onto the idea that it was the damper from a google search that led to a Forester with a buzzing noise that resonated in the drivers kick panel & rocker.
