What he said .. there is a rod inside the lift gate that will open it. The trick will be to remove the plastic retainers on the interior panel and remove the panel. Common issue ... just ordered a new 'license lamp bracket' (the bracket that holds the license lamps and lift gate handle) yesterday ... mine is rusting away and impacting the handle.
