bman
I left the car sitting in the driveway for a few weeks. Yesterday I when I took the car on the highway and got up to 40MPH it started to shake so bad I was worried the wheels were going to fall off. I pulled over and I saw the driver's front side was smoking and I smelled burnt brake. I drove the breakdown lane and did some quick stops, thinking the rust on the rotors was dragging the pads. It got a little better but, it was still shaking. And when I say shaking, the steering wheel is twitching left-right and the whole car is vibrating. I drive it to the back of a mall parking lot and do 3-4 hard stops from ~30-40MPH. I get to my destination and leave it for 9 hours. I drive it home and it's not as bad at 40MPH but, it is at 60MPH. 1) Is it just the crud on the rotors making the car shake and will it eventually smooth out? 2) Have I burnt out the pads? Should I replace them? 3) Have I warped the rotors too? Should I replace those also? 4) Is there anything else I can do to prevent this? (other than "Don't leave your car undriven for weeks") Thanks, Brian
idiot4hire
You could have got flat spots on your tires from sitting. If your rotors were warped you would be able tell as soon as you hit brakes it's Un mistakable. Having said that depending on your mileage with the brakes you may want to just replace those anyway. bman
I thought about the flat spots but, that doesn't explain the smoke or the brake smell. Could it be sticking calipers and flat spots?
idiot4hire
Maybe the glides in the caliper are sticking

(other than "Don't leave your car undriven for weeks") Thanks, Brian I would say it is likely corrosion buildup on the rotors, calipers etc. Usually it takes a bit of time to work out after sitting for a while. I have my brother in law's outback that sits at my house (cause he lives in manhattan and never drives it and doesn't want to pay for parking it in manhattan) and I take it out every 3 or 4 weeks and have a similar issue. I have to really drive it for a bit to work it out. You could also have some slider issues as well, I would give it a good greasing and see if that helps. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. SpecB82
More than likely rust build up on the rotor. Condensation gets trapped between pad and rotor and causes a lip/edge around the brake pad. Depending on how long it sat will depend on how bad the lip is. It may take a few days to "wear in" or a few months. It may never feel normal again. BTW, rotors don't warp Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk
idiot4hire
What happens to them then.
SpecB82
http://www.stoptech.com/technical-support/technical-white-papers/-warped-brake-disc-and-other-myths The rotor doesn't warp....pad transfers onto the rotor causing high spots and low spots giving the sensation of a warped rotor. I've even confirmed this with our race teams engineers (I work at Turner Motorsport). Rotors DON'T warp. bman
Turns out that one of the caliper slide pins was dry. Nothing but dust where grease should be. I regreased all of the pins and took a drive. There's a slight vibration starting around 70MPH but, nothing like it was before. I'm hoping that vibration goes away. I be driving it daily for the next couple months and I'll update.
