bmx045
your finger would have been enough to check for shaft play
No DRFT
Try holding the turbo still. It seems like too much movement to tell. I have no control over drippie.
I Donated thefultonhow Posted April 16, 2012 Author I Donated Share Posted April 16, 2012 I don't have three hands, man! If other people think I need to keep the turbo more stationary in order to tell whether it's too much shaft play, I can get another video when my fiancee comes home, but for now this is all I have. Moderators BarManBean Posted April 16, 2012 Moderators Share Posted April 16, 2012 Why are you pulling on it with pliers? Seems like that's more force than necessary to check for shaft play...not sure though...? cypher0117
It'd be nice if the turbo was still, but it still looks like the gap is changing between the fins and the wall.

I wasn't pulling super hard, but yes, I probably got a little more of a lever arm than if I were pulling with my fingers. Suffice it to say that there was a slightly, but only slightly, smaller amount of movement with my fingers.
Max Capacity
I could be wrong but no movement is ideal. If you have more than a little...Like you said, contact BNR... Good Luck. Oh BAC5.2 is pretty good twith this type of thing too... 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. BAC5.2
Sleeve bearings will have some play without oil pressure supporting them. That turbo looks like its got too much play. Any thrust play? fahr_side
Seems to have a bit more radial slop than is healthy but you look to be using a lot of force and the turbo is moving around a lot too. Can you get the blades to touch the housing or even within 0.5mm of touching? Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs. I Donated thefultonhow Posted April 16, 2012 Author I Donated Share Posted April 16, 2012 They're definitely getting within 0.5mm. Not sure if they're touching or not.

No DRFT
How many miles does it have on it? And just to think, I've already have my core vf40 in a box then i saw this thread. Hm... I have no control over drippie.
I Donated thefultonhow Posted April 16, 2012 Author I Donated Share Posted April 16, 2012 A couple hundred shy of 20k. I wouldn't necessarily take one experience as indicative of overall reliability, though. And I think I did everything right (oil changes with Rotella T6 5w40 every 3k, frequent level checks, etc.), but I don't know for sure.
I Donated thefultonhow Posted April 16, 2012 Author I Donated Share Posted April 16, 2012 Bryan got back to me and told me to pack the turbo up and send it in. We'll see what the verdict is...

I Donated thefultonhow Posted April 16, 2012 Author I Donated Share Posted April 16, 2012 Oh, I forgot to mention that I have way more oil in my intake tract than I'm used to seeing in there. Anyway, I'm about to bike home from work and box that baby up.
HAMMER DOWN
This sucks, FYI if hands to big to move the shaft & get a good vid. You could move the shaft from the Exhaust side. That way you have a uninstructed view of the intake side for you vid. Like Max did. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/142-000-miles-oem-turbo-168561.html Less then 20k, I know BNR as excellent customer service. But I put 35k a year on my LGT. I need a min. for turbo the last at lease 60K. I wait to here what BNR as to say. Until then, turbo list is down from 5 to 3.Now leaning towards VF-52, AVO-380 & FP-68HTA.
