what engines will fit?????

Recommended Posts

hello my name is colin, im 17, and i have a 1999 subaru legacy gt limited 30th anniversary sitting in my auto shop class looking very very sad with the old engine sitting next to it. the engine that i pulled out was the ej25 model and one of the cylinders seized and the rod busted off and did too much damage to the block to be bored out. i love my car very much and i was already going to buy a turbo kit for the car but since this happened i think it would be better to put in an already turboed (idk if thats a word) engine since i have to get a different engine anyways. i was wondering what everyone thinks would be the best option for me. ive heard that the ej20 engine that comes with a turbo, would bolt right in with no complications (except different exhaust piping f=to accomodate the turbo) but i really need to make sure this is correct because im a teenager and i have no money to waste on an engine that is not even going to fit. and if it will not drop right in what mods would be needed? thank you to anyone who replies with credible information to help me out and i appreciate any suggestions about where to buy the new engine!!!:)

everything made by subaru will fit pretty much. as far as direction you want to go in there is way to much info to list here. are you going to need to pass smog? if not, then definitely go JDM. JDM will be cheaper then usdm. As far as usdm you can go 2.0L or 2.5L depending on your pockets. I would keep your stock drivetrain for the time being so your best bet would be to go 2003-2006 usdm 2.0L wrx engine. Check out Nasioc.com

As far as I know, all Subaru 4 cylinder boxer motors are bolt in, into any Subaru model. Get a EJ255 from the 05+ Legacy 2.5GT. Or I would personally prefer getting a EJ255 from a 06+ WRX. The blocks are essentially the same, but the accesories on the motor are different.

Wiring is a different story, you have to merge the harnesses. I've done a few Subaru swaps back in the day, the best bang for buck motors are the old school EJ20G and EJ20K from the older GC8s. Look around for shops in your area that import honda motors, etc. they sometimes stumble upon Subaru motors and you can get them for a steal. For example, I got a Ver.7 STI EJ207 motor with harness, etc. for $2700. Check gruppe-s.com they have some cheap motors right now.

While I am no expert on this stuff either. I would think your best bet right now would be to sit down with your computer and do some serious research. Like you said, you're a student and can't afford to screw this up so your best investment right now would be to learn as much as you can about what you're about to do.

The most prominent forums that you'll find this information on are:

In fact, on rs25.com homepage is an engine for sale.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Cheers!

If you want some random general info about the JDM engines... EJ20G/K/R/7's are all great engines to use if you want 2L turbo (JDM turbo).

EJ20G's come from gen 1 legacy RS/GT's, and version 1/2 wrx/STi's - these engines have very strong closed deck blocks. Also, unlike their US counterpart (the EJ22T), the 20G's are DOHC and intercooled (Water to air intercooler).

EJ20K's are open deck, and come from V3/4 STi's. They are very very good engines, simple yet effective. They are OBD-1 ECU controlled, can be modded heaps and will still run perfectly on the simple ECU. No TGV's or EVCS or anything fancy - they're just a pure engine which i love.

EJ20R's are the Twin turbo versions of the K's, that came on the gen 2 legacy GTB/RSB's. They have the same injectors, loom, and everything. The R is reputable for blowing big end bearings though - well worth buying, then rebuilding.

EJ207's are the V7+ STi engines. Have semi-closed-deck blocks.

The R's and K's are essentially the same, only the R comes with twin turbo gear which you will need to swap with single turbo stuff (do NOT even consider twin turbo...) The benefit to the R is that it's cheeeeap, but just as good as the K.
