The shorties are all the same. Look at the factory part numbers... same for 5MT and 5EAT. It's the next section with the 2nd cat that is different.
Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs.

2010 Legacy has the turbo mounted underneath, and a completely new exhaust design from turbo to tip. Pre-2010 Legacies (and every other model besides the 2010 Legacy) has the turbo mounted high in the engine bay besides the motor. Which is why exhaust pieces were called "up" pipe and "down" pipe on the older models.

No - only a catback designed for the 2010 Legacy will fit. The closest relation to a 2010 Legacy catback is one designed for the 2008+ Impreza Sedan, but the hangers are completely different. Subaru redid nearly everything for the 2010 Legacy.

Probably the best way to illustrate it is visually:

2005-2009 Legacy Sedan and Wagon mid and Y-pipe:

2010+ Legacy mid and y-pipe:

The 2010 Legacy has a longer pipe in general.

It won't, and that's a shitty downpipe anyway.

Like what would need to be done to make it fit?

You'd have to throw it away and buy a pipe that fits.

It takes "some work" to get a random assortment of straight pipe to make a custom DP, too.
