I did the wole CARPC route as well.

And total cost was near 1000 dollars.
Crappy netbook was 200
LED LCD screen 200
wires etc.....100
back up cam 200
software and peripherals 100
GPS w/ software 100
additional labor 100 ish

I got a GPS, backup cam, capacitive screen.
Would I choose to do a galaxy tab, if I had to do it again, most likely.

Id trade my current setup for a galaxy tab right now. And if you are upto it, you can always fabricate the bezel to hard mount it into the cubby. I am exploring that right now.

That's exactly what I want to do. If you end up finding something out let me know, and I'll happily do the same.

There is one dude on iwsti that did it w/ an iPad ...

Update: Dear God, that iPad setup is hideous :|

I went and ordered one of these. It's dirt cheap, so as a trial run it'll give me an idea of whether or not an Android tablet has the capacity to be a full fledged carputer. Consider it a litmus test.

The physical dimensions, 7.08in x 4.33in x 0.59in, are smaller but similar to the staple Xenarc 700TSV which rides in at 7.72W x 4.88H x 1.42D. The only thing I'm really concerned with at the moment is how the screen will react to bright light. It has all the other criteria including GPS, bluetooth (for OBDii), headphone out, and USB charge.

When the unit comes in and fabrication begins I'll pop out another update or two. Wish me luck.

Ah.... I'm so glad you came along, Dano.

You can be the guinea pig!

What are you going to do for mounting the screen? Are you going to make it yourself? If so, just angle the screen in more. Should take care of daylight.

edit: just looked at full specs. Looks pretty good. I honestly didn't think it would have access to the Market, but it does! The only concern is the slower processor. I think it should be okay though!

Well the question is what are you using for navigation; interface when most things are Windows-based in the CarPC community ?

My interface is unfortunately limited by either the vanilla android car interface (pictured here) or whatever I can homebrew. Keep in mind, for every tile on car mode is customizable, so I can throw Torque on any one of those squares, press the home button on the side, and it'll throw me back out to access navigation or music or anything else. It CAN work for what I need it to do, but it's not very pretty and it could be MUCH more functional.

Navigation is the easy part, CoPilot in the android app store downloads the US maps to SD card. It's not as nice as Google Maps Navigation, but that one requires data connection to download maps on the fly.

 Exactly!

I thought about home brewing an interface, but for serious - the Vanilla CarPanel while basic, is pretty functional. I don't need anything that serious.

It'd be nicer to get it looking more like CF2. Shrink the buttons, have a logo in the middle. Bigger Time/Date. Access to weather, etc.

EquinnoxX 11-19-2010 10:01 AM

lol i just said he did something similar, not that it was good looking! :D

Looking forward to the android tab results!

Deadleave 11-19-2010 05:12 PM

I looked at that midnight tab, let me know how it works out.

Looks like it has GPS, but was wary of the "Slide me" app store ?

You can always tether your phone as wifi hot spot, and have network access, so as long as you can get Google Navigator to work, and Pandora, and Torque, I think for most of us, that is like 80% of what we need.

If it checks out, and you can run all of the above, Ill jump on that too.

Grumbles at losing reverse cam though. (Though I am working on cheap composite to IP video box, testing it works, but its not automatic of the reverse wire )

Methinks it has full android marketplace access, but even if it doesn't that handy checkbox to install from outside sources will be verrrry useful.

Deadleave 11-23-2010 08:21 AM

did you receive the unit yet ?

MatsuDano 11-23-2010 09:21 PM

Negativo. Estimated Arrival Date is now 12/01/2010. Feels bad man :(

yeah, also you can use AppBrain and Applanet too :)

Have you decided on what you are going to do with the screen? Take the entire thing apart and mount it, similar to what people do with the Xenarcs?
