ulra high performance tires dont perform high enough. you need extreme performance summer tires. bridgestone re-01r or yokohama advan neova ad07 FTMFW

That would explain why my Legacy with Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S is always sliding into the ditch

Either use Slicks or park the car - it is much too dangerous ;)

I hope they take the exact same 4 tires and do the snow comparison this winter. Then you'll have more info to make an informed buying decision. I love my pirellis but they aren't great in snow. I spoke with Luke@TireRack last week. The ONLY all season he said that he'd run would be the Bridgestones. He ranked some tires for me. Bridgestone RE960A/S, pirelli PZero M&S, yokohama Advans then michelin Pilot Sport A/S.

Snow is not always criteria for an UHP all-season driver.

I am happy with my WRX's RE960's in coastal New England much in their first year which is much more rain than snow.

I am still shopping for new tires to replace our LGT's 37k RE92's sometime this winter.

Nah... this is not true for me and likely so for many others as well. Maybe for you since you auto-x frequently - true. I can attest to the accuracy of the review as I've had the P-Zero's on for a couple thousand miles now under and have pushed them pretty hard. No, they're no hi-po summer/track tires. But they are very good. For someone who needs a "performance" all-around tire for our cars, this is an excellent choice. :) "Extreme performance tires" though great for the track almost killed me this past winter - bad idea for a lot of folks.

Consumer Reports next month is going to test tires including UHP supposedly. They do test tires in a winter condition and RE960's are likely included. Beyond the winter rating their testing is well......

Yeah, their ice test is in a skating rink at 10mph. I subscribe and emailed them about their methodology. They don't post the raw data, and their recommendations use data not shown in the tests.

CR did test "Ultra Performance" tires in November 2003. The ranking was Goodyear F1 GS D3, Toyo Proxes T1-S, Continental ContiSportContact 2,Dunlop SP Sport 9000,Pirelli PZERO NERO,Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position.

Tire rack does a more realistic job, posts the raw data - but doesn't include Nokian, since they're not sold mail-order. There is one passenger all-season with the severe service snow (mountain/snowflake) rating: the Nokian WR. If anyone else selling an all-season could pass it, they would.

They do test tires in snow too. I copied this off the website:

Snow traction reflects the distance our test car needed to accelerate from 5 to 20 mph on moderately packed snow. We tested ice braking on a skating rink from 10 mph with the ABS disengaged.

Interestingly RE960 places 4 of 4 however they really are pretty close.

why such a HUGE difference from previous tests? i mean HUGE. 960 a/s specifically.

they're not even qualified to test toasters. they're continually retracting infant car seat tests because they screwed up. and they're always being sued my manufacturers for posting incorrect information. at least the tire rack only does one thing and they don't claim to be experts about every product on earth.

many reasons. different cars, and a different time of year are two of the major ones. you can't really compare results from different tests.

the 960 was extremely out of balance while the others were only half of the 960's. the michilin wasn't too far off.

and the cars were a my 03 330ci back in june 03 and now an 06 my 325i in sept 07. same exact tire width at 225.

I wonder how the Nokian WR would compare to any of these tires. Anyone owned the WR and any of the tires in the study?

I have owned the Nokian WR on my wife's Civic. It was on par in the wet with a RE960 I have on my WRX. In snow it is superior to any of the comparo tires including the Conti ExtremeContact's. However its labeled a winter tire.

The dry and warm days they are not ultra high performance. Personally I think even the unloved RE92's are slightly better in the dry.

That being all said I am considering the WR G2 for my wife's LGT.
