TurboXS FMIC install

So today I installed my turboxs FMIC today and I thought that I should let you guys know about my experience. First off, there were no pictures or diagrams in the instructions, so other than knowing which pipe connected to which other pipe, it was pretty much a guessing game. All seemed to go quite smoothly until it was time to attach the bumper.

The directions state that the stock fog lights remain intact....there is no chance in the world that the fog lights can remain intact. After hacking away half of the housing for the drivers side fog, we realized that the fog lights needed to come out for the intercooler piping to clear.

The directions also stated that "some trimming" was needed, we took about 2 1/2"-3" of the bumper cover off before it just barely cleared the intercooler. The core is pretty big though

After everything is said and done, the intercooler looks badass b/c there isn't much bumper left in front of it. It seems to be working well although I def need a tune. I've lost about 2 lbs of boost, but I'm sure that can be remedied with a tune.

I really just expected better fitment/instructions from an intercooler thats as expensive as this one.

One last thing.......I HATE POPPITS

kongzilla 03-28-2012 08:10 PM

2lbs of boost. is that commmon for front mounts or is it because the core was big.

Pictures?

mwm5094 03-28-2012 08:22 PM

^boost loss is very common

kongzilla 03-28-2012 08:26 PM

Thanks.... Must remember to get retuned after FMIC install.

ChefRacer 03-28-2012 08:33 PM

I'll post some pictures tommorow, I've had a busy day today w this thing

mr.hicksta 03-28-2012 08:34 PM

Hmmm....I'm not switching back to an FMIC, but I'm in for pics. Considering TXS is behind this I expected nothing but stellar reviews. Strange....

mr.hicksta 03-28-2012 08:35 PM

And FWIW ChefRacer, on the Infamous website it say 05-07s might not be able to keep the fog lights.

.:Catalyst:. 03-28-2012 11:30 PM

Interested in seeing pictures as well. I'm leaning heavily towards the PW when I get to that Stage but I have a thing for TXS bits now that I'm preparing for Stage 2, and will be securing the TXS CBE as well.

What intake did you go with? Did you use the TXS WRX/STi fitment one? Curious to see bumper, intake, and BPV positioning.

Thanks!

One thing to keep in mind, is that this is not a kit designed for the LGT. It's the 08+ WRX kit, sold for the LGT.

I'll be doing my install at some point eventually, so I'll try and improve the instructions for an LGT/OBXT install.

The comment on IP&T's site about some 05-07's being able to keep the fogs is right on. I've seen the install on an one that kept the lights, and yours didn't.

mr.hicksta 03-29-2012 04:35 AM

That's interesting. I was under the impression changes were made for the LGT. When are you installing yours BAC?

BAC5.2 03-29-2012 04:39 AM

No changes were made for the LGT that I am aware of. They did an install on an 05/06 a while back, and it was a bolt-in.

Probably sometime mid-april. Whenever my turbo is definitely on the way is when I'll do all the stage-3 preppings.

mr.hicksta 03-29-2012 04:44 AM

Got ya. Well if anything I know the TXS is going to be high quality, and I think it's damn near impossible to install an FMIC in an LGT or OBXT without doing some hacking. Just the way it goes I suppose.

What turbo are you going with? Are you going to be in town next week? I'll be up that way on Wednesday to pickup my offspring :).

@ChefRacer - :needpics:

:D

BAC5.2 03-29-2012 04:55 AM

Turbo is top-secret.

I'm actually going to Texas all of next week.

ChefRacer 03-29-2012 05:50 AM

Sorry I haven't gotten pics up yet, I was out till 5 am getting a tune from STI Mikey. As soon as I wake up a bit I'll put some pics up, I did take a bunch.

How was the quality of the kit overall?

bmx045 03-29-2012 06:03 AM

my buddy has this kit on his 09 wrx, no complaints, and he's pretty critical.

chutrain 03-29-2012 06:16 AM

It does fit with the foglights. You have to turn the pipe and trim a little of the coupler. Instructions are on their website. This is the mold a few of the knock off companies are using, so there are a numerous writeups on how to install.

I think the fit other than the trimming of the bumper was great. Much better than me trying to wrestle the RacerX. Quality of the kit overall was excellent. Currently working with Shamar for the tune.

ChefRacer 03-29-2012 06:48 PM

I felt that the quality of the kit is great. It's nice that they give you piping for an LGT style turbo and intake manifold, or an STI style turbo and intake manifold. I haven't heard of any other LGT fmics that can function with an STI style intake mani. Here are a couple of pics. I forgot to get a pic of the finished product b/c it was getting too late, we spent about 2 1/2 hrs trying to get the piping around the fog lights and I really don't see how it's even possible.

We had to reroute the piping on the drivers side after this picture, but we didn't realize this until we started to put everything back together because the directions weren't clear at all.
It got dark after that point so I didn't have any further pics. I'll get some pics of the finished product tommorow.

I thought you were staying top mount. Or am I thinking of someone else?

ChefRacer 03-29-2012 07:06 PM

I still need to extend my fuel lines to give them a bit more slack and get a Grimmspeed EBCS to get a bit more boost out of it. Right now I've got a VF40 with a 3" DP, 3" mid and Y with stock mufflers an HKS intake and of course the Turboxs fmic. I'm maxing out at 17 psi at the manifold. I'm hoping after the ebcs to get 19-20.

bmx045 03-29-2012 07:11 PM

Remove the 10mm bolt holding the fuel rails to the manifold and carefully bend them up a little. Carefully. Had to do this with my racerx too.

ChefRacer 03-29-2012 09:03 PM

I did do that already, I just want to be on the safe side so I'm going to replace the factory clips with regular hose clamps in favor of having longer fuel lines there.

ChefRacer 03-29-2012 09:07 PM

I couldn't wait till the morning so here are some current pics. I am going to clean the engine bay and the rest of the car tommorow, just didn't have any time or energy today.

chutrain 03-30-2012 06:20 AM

The stock fuel lines will be fine. I put a strip of foam weather stripping on the top and bottom of the pipe to provide some cushioning and rub protection. Did you get the foglight to work?

bmx045 03-30-2012 06:21 AM

It was tight with my racerx, I'm pretty sure these pipes are bigger, my lines would rub the hood liner....

ChefRacer 03-30-2012 07:40 AM

Couldn't get the fog lights to come remotely close to fitting, I would have to cut a chunk out of the frame of the car to get the IC piping high enough to clear them

chutrain 03-30-2012 08:34 AM

You need to trim the coupler on the IC side and a little trimming on the corner of the
foglight housing. Can not see once the foglight cover is put back on. You just need to push
slightly on the piping to clear when putting the bumper back on.

The TXS piping clears the hood liner. I was worried originally as initial test fit was a little high,
but some massaging of the fitment made everything fit nicely. A shame I can't use my JDM
engine bay covers now.

chutrain 03-30-2012 08:52 AM

Some install pics for anyone that has question on how to route the piping near the
foglight. This is for a FMS kit, which is a copy of the TXS.

Here are pics of mine with a satin black thermal dispersant paint used on radiators.
Excuse the camera phone and dirty car.

GTTuner 03-30-2012 09:16 AM

Be carefull extending those fuel lines. I recomend CAREFULLY cutting the crimps for the hoses right at the fittings for the rail, removing the OE hoses and use good quality EFI hoses and clamps.

Looks good though!

Windy Road 03-31-2012 07:26 PM

Need photos on a 08-09 stat lol. Debaiting on staying TMIC or switching over to a FMIC once I start going back to stage 2.

captainobvious 03-31-2012 07:43 PM

I got an intercooler meant for the 08 WRX and i lost my fogs completely as well. Not a big deal i ordered the covers for them and just gonna paint them black. I actually like the way it looks.

wpgspecb 04-01-2012 07:21 AM

Does this FMIC or any for that matter retain the full front bumper beam?

Our DOT inspection cops where I am are super strict.

Also, Am I noticing crazy bends on the left side (drivers) right below the head light? Are all FMIC kits that aggressive on the bends?

the racerx keeps all of that

LegacyDan 07-04-2012 07:02 PM

Sorry to bump an ikd thread but I'm interested in this kit. How is the bottom of the core secured in place? I can't make it out from any pics I have seen. Any problems refitting the under tray or any other of the lower plastic covers behind the bumper?

Anymore pics from the engine bay of yours fitted? Looking to get this kit for mine for use with new. Blouch dominator 1.5xtr ts.but can fit this while saving for that!

chutrain 07-12-2012 06:47 PM

Just took some things apart in the engine bay to find a leak, so some things are missing.
I will try to get some pics when I get a chance. I think this is a great kit for what it is
worth. Would not hesistate to buy again.

LegacyDan 10-19-2012 04:49 PM

has anyone else fitted one of these Turbo XS FMIC kits yet? i think its still in first place for the one ill go for when i upgrade my turbo in a few months.

ChefRacer 10-21-2012 06:27 PM

I've got a 2nd core going in soon. I got into a front end collision and the turboxs bumper beam took pretty much all of the damage. The core got dented a bit but still holds boost just fine.
Anybody want a dented core/bumper beam?

m sprank 10-23-2012 12:13 PM

Just a note to everyone. We performed the test fits for Turbo-XS. 05-06, 07-09 and JDM bumpers, plus 07-09 5EAT fitment.

We also have our own "custom" install instructions, with pix specifically for the LGT.

When you buy the kit from us, you get the instructions too.

We noted the fog lamp fitment on 05-06 long ago and included the notation in our website product description. No one else does this because no one else test fits products like we do.

Replacement parts for the FMIC kit are not available via vendors. But if you contact TurboXS directly they should be able to take care of you. Like what happened to ChefRacer.

ChefRacer 10-25-2012 06:19 PM

I guess those instructions weren't available when I got my kit....I just used the fms fmic install pics to figure mine out.
