stevenva
{It's Finished}-scroll down I have done the LED dash mod but I am not satisfied with the results. I used the white LEDs after removing the black dot matrix and green dye layer from the rear of the gauges. After a year or so one of the LEDs is now flashing like a strobe for the first 5 minutes after starting the car. It's annoying as hell. Besides, After removing the dot matrix layer the light intensity is uneven. Also, 2 of the LEDs I ordered appear to be a different color temperature and don't match the rest. I was thinking that since I have to pull it apart anyway, why not try something new. I was thinking of removing the cathode rings from 2 of these 12vdc 120mm computer fans with a Dremel and using them for the back-light. It looks like they will fit. Dimming won't be an option but I don't care. RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles

Stasis
If you could make a mod to better illuminate the miles counter would be good it's as if a bulb is blown and annoys me constantly

stevenva
If you could make a mod to better illuminate the miles counter would be good it's as if a bulb is blown and annoys me constantly The odometers do not have their own light. I might as well use one, (section of 3 LEDs), of my still working LED's and mod that too. Good call. stevenva
After measuring, It doesn't look like the 120mm will fit. An 80mm will work. RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles
stevenva
New plan. I searched and can't find 80mm dual cold cathode tubes in white. It's the small ring in white that I can't get unless I get the 120mm dual version (just for the tiny ring) and a separate 80 mm version. I'm going with surface mount LED rings instead. They're cheap too. $17.98 for all shipped. I just ordered them. They each come in packs of 2. EDIT: Get 90mm and 40mm Turns out that these are dimmable. Stasis
angel eyes would be insanely bright, potentially generate too much heat for this also?

SpecBamf41
why not the same 80mm rings i use in my headlights? BNR18g on 93oct
stevenva
That would be fine if I didn't have to do the small fuel and temp ones too. I want the color temp/brightness to match so I got the same style in both. I found many options in the larger size, but it was tough to find the same ones in a smaller version. stevenva
I wound up using a pair of 40mm and a pair of 90mm led rings as my light source. Same manufacturer for all of them. I initially got the 80mm also and I'm glad I did. I used the 80s to experiment with and see where I had to cut them, and used a small section of leftover to light up the odometer better. They can only be cut in certain sections of 3 lights or you will lose a portion of the lights. They must fit without impeding the gauges mounting points. The gauges mounting screws are how the electrical connections are made. It required more modification to the cluster and the LED rings than I anticipated. I provided several photos of the finished product using different exposures, flash/no-flash. It is bright, uniform and dimmable. It took a while but it was fun. The 90mm link http://www.ebay.com/itm/170862503525?item=170862503525&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:L:OC:US:3160&vxp=mtr The 40mm link http://www.ebay.com/itm/170863035451?item=170863035451&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:L:OC:US:3160&vxp=mtr RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles

stevenva
Not counting the dry time for the adhesive, 3 to 4 leisurely hours. I was in no hurry whatsoever. RIP 96 Legacy 2.2 4EAT lost reverse @ 374,000 miles
Stasis
Glad you took my idea to light up the odo better xD it looks epic, is it white because you've already sanded the green backing off? If you didn't the odo would still be lit white? If you wanted to keep the green would you get green led rings?
