This is a totally capable engine & doesn't get enough respect/attention due to it's open-deck, which steers people away from even considering building this engine to awesome levels.
With DOHC heads, the compression automatically drops to a level completely turbo friendly (from what I've read on the EJcalc) & it has good low-end. It's also very reliable & doesn't obliterate head gaskets.
Is there any reason to ignore this engine & go for the EJ25? I mean, why would someone do that if they have an EJ22 right in their face, ready to be dismantled & explored?

The EJ22 has enormous potential. Xcelleration actually makes a stroker kit for the EJ22 turning it into a 2.35L engine, but this is only done with the EJ22T motor.

People often forget that when they boost an EJ25 block that they're still using an open deck design. The EJ22E is still stronger in my opinion, and as you said, they don't get hungry for head gaskets. The interchangeability for parts in these engines with other Subaru engines means this engine could be a beast and a half with some tinkering. It's about time someone made a race bred N/A 2.2L screamer delivering upwards of 220 HP (100 HP/Liter). It's only a matter of time.
