Oh yeah! If you know anyone with an EJ22 on here, tell them to join too. We gotta get some more people on here!

I have an EJ22 in my 90 legacy wagon.

Once I get her fixed up, Im interested in grabbing info on how to raise the BHP to about 250. But for now Id settle to have her just run right!

Ya know, I was thinking about this last night....

I work at a machine shop, so some of this would be easier for me than for someone else.

Here were my plans....

Total rebuild. 0.010 overbore on the cylinders. Honed and aligned main bearing caps, decked top end if required.

Polished crank.

Custom JE pistons, with slightly higher compression ratio, something like 9.6:1 (Somewhere between the Phase I and Phase II motor) with the Phase II style piston skirts.

Eagle H-Beam connecting rods.

ARP stud kit.

Unorthodox underpulley kit.

Custom lightweight camshaft pulley's machined from 6061 T6 aluminum.

Custom lightweight timing belt idler pulley's and water pump pulley machined from 6061 T6 aluminum with precision bearings.

(Post continued, too long...)

Ported and polished cylinder head and intake manifold with port matched gaskets.

Oversize titanium valves with stiffer springs and titanium retainers.

3 angle valve job on the phase 1 cylinder head.

Xcelleration torque grind camshafts.

Bigger fuel injectors with high flow fuel pump.

Rebuilt throttle body with custom ground down flush butterfly valve screws.

Engine oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator.

Oversize oil filter.

Custom bumper mounted cold air intake with K&N filter.

Custom true dual exhaust with dual high flow cats and cut/welded custom EJ25 headers. I might need a cross pipe for the O2 sensors or something, but thats trivial considering the work I was considering.

Custom machined lightweight flywheel with the 5 speed manual swap.

MSD ignition swap with low resistance wires.

Iridium spark plugs. Bosch Iridium Fusions would be nice.

40 weight racing conventional oil.

(Post continued. Too long... Again...)

A rather generous estimate would be 230 horsepower for a build like this, but it would be 230 horsepower that would last you hundreds of thousands of miles. Considering this would be better than 100 horsepower per liter out of a naturally aspirated block/head combo that was designed 20 years ago, I think this would be an excellent setup.

Yeah but your not planning on placing this 250BHP motor in a 1900 pound car either are you? LOL

:insert screaming smiley here:

My wagon will be my bread and butter car during this winter, we get 3 foot of snow easy here, and that AWD and ABS will be a life saver.

These subies, have always been outstanding winter cars. My dad had a 1983 GL1800 4 dr. And that lil car had snow piling up on the hood and it kept going, The body literally fell apart before the engine quit.

Im wondering though wouldnt it be cheaper in the long run to just buy a JDM WRX STI turbo motor already cranking out 291BHP? Rather than build up an EJ22?

Are the head bolts reusable on an ej22 motor? I may have to replace my head gaskets.

They run about $50 on Ebay. For a bit more you can get the turbo ones, which I think will work without a problem. For more you can swap out some ARP studs and reuse them until the end of time.....

The 2.5 isn't as strong as the EJ22. The EJ22 is a bulletproof design with thick cylinder walls. Subaru engines in drag cars usually use the EJ22 or EJ22T block with oversized sleeves pressed into it that accept STI internals. When you're all said and done, you have an STI crank, STI conrods, STI pistons, in an EJ22 block. Doesn't get much stronger than that. With cylinder sleeves you can run all the boost you want. If you ran a hopped up EJ25 you would probably crack a cylinder wall just about every season of drag racing once you cranked up the boost.

only the 91-94 legacy turbos came with the 2.2T closed deck engine in the U.S. ur 92 N/A legacy has an open deck design.

With a limited budget, (or at least the amount that I'm willing to put out), I'm looking for approx. 175 hp. 175 torque reliable daily driver, (if it's fun to drive it, then that's what I want to do). 2.2 single port all the way because this engine has responded well to mods so far done.
