Navigation / OnStar thread

Recommended Posts

I haven't yet been a big fan of navigation, and from what I've read about OnStar, it doesn't seem that great. Does anybody have experience with OnStar, and how do you like it? What are the advantages/disadvantages of the monthly service over a normal dvd based navigation?

I would really like DVD navigation. I go on quite a few road trips with the woman and its handy not to have to dig for maps or rely on her to be able to read a map. Plus we'd more more apt to go new places, and explore more once we got there. I don't know much about On-Star, sounds like AAA services with GPS tracking.

I just can't see paying for nav as an option, then having to pay for the service, as well. If the service is free (is it?), it would make the feature a bit more attractive, but my experiences with nav to date have been terrible. It seems to me that if you're going to have nav, the system that's in the Honda Accord, that is voice-activated, is the bee's knees. Kevin

yah navigations are expensive but what my friend did was he got this PDA with this thick antena attached to back of the PDA and that thick antena came with navigation program so he basically got a navigation for around $500 (i'm not quite sure about price) but it was decent a navigation

Subaru has already shown that they will go with OnStar since it is used in the current Outback. From what I can see, you pay a monthly service and have different upgrades available with the basic service just for emergencies and theft tracking. I guess you speak to a representative like a hands free cell call, and they look up where to you need to go and plug it in. The good side of that would be that you are not being distracted from the road to plug in your desired destination info. Also, their database should stay updated instead of the individual having to buy new dvds every so often to keep things new. I just hate the idea of monthly service fees.

Maybe so, but they have the relationship with GM and have already started using it. I don't see them changing. OTOH, its use in Cadillac and Saab show that it can be used in a premium car. Maybe it's not that bad. I don't know. i think I have a low image of it because it's a GM system. American technology is almost an oxymoron like military intelligence as they say. It sounds more user friendly than BMW's system for one. The other systems don't allow for a hands-free phone service.

Not sure about any other systems. OnStar is the only one I know of that charges a monthly fee. This is from the Acura website. HandsFreeLink™ replaces the hassle of handling a mobile phone while driving. This system utilizes Bluetooth® technology, which transfers incoming call data to the Multi-Info Display (MID), where the driver can view incoming call details. Voice Recognition™ will dial stored numbers with voice command, and will even direct-dial locations stored in the navigation system. HandsFreeLink is available on Bluetooth-enabled phones that are equipped with the Hands Free Profile (HFP).

DVD Navigation would be the way to go. I wouldn't want the onstar. It seems like it's primarily for emgerencies. So the monthly fee would be the insurance policy. At least with interactive navigation you can use it all the time. If onstar is the only option, I'd go with an aftermarket NAV system. Even on fully loaded vehicles, the NAV is still an option.

Does anybdy know what the OnStar service charges are? Seeing the size of Subaru and the number of navigation equipped cars they would sell, it doesn't make any sense for them to have their own DVD navigation when OnStar is a parts bin away. Again, Subaru is already using OnStar, so I'm at least 98% sure it will still be used. If you know about aftermarket navigation make some suggestions. This thread probably ought to be closed or merged with the one Tide started last week. Sorry, I missed it.

The Outback Limited Sedan costs $26,720, and it is a $2,200 upgrade to the H6-3.0 Sedan. The upgrades are the OnStar and the H6 engine. That's about what I would expect for the engine upgrade alone. I'm hunting around on the Cadillac site to get a better idea of what is offered there, and it doesn't look too bad. OnStar is standard, but GPS based DVD navigation is an additional $475 on their top Bose stereo. Since the screen is already "included" in the price for the standard OnStar, $475 is reasonable. Then for Saab, OnStar is a $699 option in the 9-3 (standard on the Aero model), and there is no DVD navigation. It costs $695 on a Buick Regal. My guess is that the cost for OnStar is probably going to be about $700 based on the above examples. The other thing that they could do is offer the OnStar as standard equipment in the H6 models to make up for them getting spanked by the 2.5T. ;) They already set a precedent for combining it with the H6 engine. Since the DVD nav is only on Cadillac and not even Saab, I wouldn't count on that option. :(

Guess not so much. Good ol paper map and a GPS would be my best tools. Still like the ability to throw the map on the hood or trunk and view it with several people. Plop out the GPS, check coordinates, route/whatever, and roll. Then again, a good sense of direction does wonders too. ;)

It's common for almost all cars to have "requisite" options to be able to get another option. Many times it's to force content, and sometimes its to make sure that commonly desired options get ordered. I don't expect to be able to get the McIntosh on a base GT at all, and we'll be lucky to get it on a Limited given past Legacy options. That's just the way it goes, and it helps push the product. If you want navigation that bad, just suck it up and get leather/moonroof with it. Of course you can get more individualized options on a BMW if you are willing to pay the BMW price. I think a GT LTD is cheaper.

Not a great fan of NAV as I don't think it's that problematic in gonig by maps. After all one will have to pay an arm & two legs to get that plus service charges etc. Freeways are clearly marked - there's no need here unlike when one's flying a plane, then a NAV system is desired.

NAV system are cool toys but i think i'd wait these things always get cheaper.
