View Full Version : Who's up for a Spring Fun Run in SoCal - 4/16?
Subietonic
02-24-2005, 11:28 PM
Our SoCal LegacyGT ranks have grown significantly over the past few months and so that just begs the question, when can we get together?
So - let's do a fun run here in SoCal.
We'll kickoff with a mid-morning drive-in meet and group photo at Norm Reeves in Temecula. That would be reasonably central for most of the SoCal Subaru LGT crew. I would also expect that several 2.5RS, WRX and STI owners might want to join up too.
Once we get the majority of the group there, we could form up and make a freeway dash up to the Palm Desert Area arriving around lunchtime. Once there, we'd refuel (lunch for us and our cars) at one of the local establishments and grab another group photo. (~80 miles)
From there we'd head South on SR74 (Pines to Palms Hwy) up over the San Jacinto's to Idyllwild. One of my favorite runs in all of SoCal and ideally suited to motorcycles and Subarus. Particularly gorgeous views at some of the pull outs. (~25 miles)
Once we get up to Idyllwild, we can do the snack and potty break and take some more photos.
From there, there's a couple of options - head down to Temecula on SR74 via Hemet (~45 miles) or, drop down through Anza and pick up SR79 into Temecula (~50 miles).
Proposed Itinerary (Saturday 4-16 - Day after taxation day - let's go relax)
1. Meet up at Norm Reeves in Temecula (9:00-1030)
2. Drive up to Palm Springs/Banning (10:30-11:30)
3. Lunch/refuel in Palm Springs/Banning area (11:30-12:30)
4. Drive up to Idyllwild on SR-243 the Palms to Pines Highway (1230-1:30)
5. Stop in Idyllwild for a soda/snack/potty break and group photo (1:30-2:30)
6. Head back to Temecula via Hemet or Anza (2:30-4:00)
It makes a fun, full day and it could be our Spring Fling before the Memorial Day weekend is upon us and then all of our Summer calendars start to fill up.
LandShark will be coordinating with his contact at Norm Reeves and see if they would be amenable to hosting us on the 16th.
I've posted this on the NASIOC.com SoCal site too (invite other Subaru folk)?
We're still looking for an easy, quick access Palm Springs/Palm Desert area food stop that could accomodate 30-50 cars (or more)
Okay - over to you all. I'm standing by for your thoughts and ideas.

The desert is in massive carpet bloom right now. In fact we'll probably head out this weekend to Borrego Springs to see it in all it's freshly watered spendor. This is the first real bloom they've had since 1987 so it's worth seeing.

I had had that same thought for those coming from the Beach areas. Love the Ortega Highway. Another road made for motorcycles and Subarus.
Dactylonian - some things are more important - Congratulations and have a wonderful honeymoon, we understand ;)
rB5 - okay - I'm completely jealous. We'll expect some first rate live action shots and/or video though. How did you set this up? Also keeping my eye out for a good condition BC or BF 5MT. Great cars and the 2.2T is as bulletproof an engine as you'll ever want to find. Would love to have one on this run.

sde -
Really like that drive. We went out yesterday and wouldn't you know it the lithium batts in my camera were kaput. Couldn't even find AA's, sold out everywhere I went and we were really hungry so food became a number 1 priority. By the time we got fed and watered, it was time to head back. But, the flowers were awesome and the colors were incredibly vibrant.
We were 2 cars behind a RBP OB. Never could tell if it was an XT or not. Didn't see any other Subes at BS, but did see a ton of WRXs and Foresters on the way out and back. Waved to them all but got no response.
We'll probably do it again the weekend after next if we get a break from this next winter rain storm. It's supposed to give us another good lashing and may last through next weekend. Thank God for the rain, but it's beyond soggy everywhere.

This is going to be a blast! The hard part will be trying to control my urge to "test" each other's LGT!
I will contact NR Subaru in Temecula today. I inquire about both April 9-10 and April 16-17. Perhaps they will use the occassion to schedule their own next Subie meet since they have them there every 2 months and the last one was a couple of weeks ago!
Stay tuned.

I have never been out that way and I live fairly close in Yorba Linda. I'd like to take the kids (4 & 6) and wife for a drive.
For a half day or slightly less, where should I go to make the most of it? Second reason for going out sooner is just for myself-getting familiar with the roads/area.
Thanks,

Drew,
If you want a nice ride, take 91 North to 60 East and at Beaumont, pick up 79 South up to Hemet. Then pick up 74 West back to 15 North and back to 91 South and home.
Depending on how tolerant the kids and the wife are to really twisty turny roads, you could take the 243 up to Idyllwild and then shoot down the 74 into Hemet and then straight on 74 West back to 15 North, 91 South and home.
Both will give you a great feel for the area.

i think u mean 91 East :) .. it's funny how most odd number fwys run north/south, .. and the 91 runs east/west.

Update: I spoke with Oscar, Parts Dept. manager at Norm Reeves Subaru in Temecula. He said they would love to host the "launching point" for the SoCal Run. They routinely host a local Subie meet and will let me know very soon when the next one is scheduled. I shared with him the suggested 4/9 or 4/16 dates and he thought that was the perfect time to hold the next scheduled meet.
As soon as Oscar gets back to me with a confirmed date, I will post it up. They normally do the meet thing between 11 AM and 2 PM. So we could gather there at the suggested 9 AM to 10 AM period and get the party started earlier. Then we can hit the road when the Subie meet crowd starts arriving. Oscar was up for that!

I actually put down 91 East because it runs E/W but then realized that it was an odd number and changed it to N/S. And I really couldn't recall whether the road signs say East or West.
Anyway, on www.mapquest.com (http://www.mapquest.com) it looked sortof Northish and Southish... lol.
Thanks for clarifying.

SBT
The parking is not so great....typical car dealership lot. The main road (Ynez Rd.) that all the dealerships are on does not allow parking on the curb. I would estimate that about 20-25 "extra" cars could easily park within the N.R. Subaru lot. The good news is that Norm Reeves has a chain of dealerships side-by-side there so I'm sure that more people could park next door in the Honda or Acura or Chrysler lots.

We're definitely going on the 16th. After tax day we'll all, or most of us anyway, need a fun/relax day. Can't think of a better way to spend it than hanging with the Subaru crew and pounding the hills.
Here's who has signed up so far. I'll be getting name tags for each owner/driver and putting together a map/trip packet for your car. Want to keep a back-of-the-envelope handle on how many are planning to attend.
LandShark is coordinating with Norm Reeves and knows the area so I'm counting on him to recommend a good place to site the cars for the initial photos.

For all,
This is set up to be a a friendly "cruise" with some opportunities to enjoy some spirited "moments" enroute. The last thing we want to have is a pull-over situation from the local constabulary. Tends to get expensive and slows things down considerably. That and none of us will want to pull over and wait while one of our crew "sweats" it out with the man. CHP tends to frown on the "waiting" while they're ticketing... :)
Many friends, wives/husbands, girlfirends/boyfriends are tagging along, so we want to make sure that they enjoy the "fun run" too.
A008,
Ben, glad you're making it down for this. Looking forward to meeting you all. This time two weeks from now it will all be memories, pictures and hopefully some good video shots.
Speaking of videos, would someone like to volunteer to do some video capture of the various stages? Let me know so we can discuss your ideas and thoughts.

I am going to take my wife and 1 year old daughter. Is that a good idea or should I leave them at home. My wife wants to go and I just say ok. But I was wondering if anyone else going to take there families?

If you hang back at the back and don't want to "push" then I think you'd be okay taking your daughter. However, if you want to exercise your suspension and get a feel for what your car is capable of, I'd recommend not taking her... unless she was born with a steering wheel in her hands and is already piloting her own Subaru...:).
Bottom line, you can make this as spirited or as sedate as you and your crew are comfortable with. It's designed to be fun and rewarding.

That's too bad, buplew :(. Hopefully there will be a summer meet that you can attend if this is successful! :p
On the other hand, my best friend finally got his Evo MR tonight! Unfortunately there weren't any white ones, sooo he got the graphite grey one. Oh well, still sexy. Woo hoo! I'm so excited. One more week.

Well... for work reasons, I will also have to be removed from the list. I'd like to go, but you gotta do you what you gotta do.

by far a friendly ride in the wine country hills and beautiful high desert areas.
I promise not to exceed 100 mph

This is my first digital video camera and I'm trying to figure out the whole copy, format, download, host thing. My JVC camera came with a manual about 100 pages large but only has 1/2 page on connecting to a PC. I now know that I need to buy a digital video cable. Doing it thru a USB connection loses clarity. Hoping to have time to work all this out on Saturday.

Let me start another thread on this so we can start planning over the next couple weeks. Anyone interested in working on the planning, PM me back or, if you're going to the San Diego P&O meet on Thursday, hit me up and let me know you're interested. I have a few things in mind for this Spring's event but it will take some work to get there.

Closing the thread so we don't get it confused with the 2006 Fun Run.
