The best one I've been to is:
Sushi Nozawa in Sudio City, CA. Home of the Sushi Nazi. Do anything to piss him off like talk on your cell phone, he'll hand you the check. You eat what he prepares. Only thing he will ask if you don't want it is sea urchin. Great food, really fresh fish. About $100 per person.
Fuji Sushi in Davis, CA. Nothing fancy. You can't beat their all you can eat lunch buffett for $11 per person. They lose money when I show up especially when I'm sitting at the bar clearing off the sushi boats like the world is coming to an end.

^^ that last line if F'n classic.
Let me hit you with some reality...$100 per for sushis is a joke! Thank the lord I don't live in Cali. Wife and I can hit a great sushi place here at the beach for $50 with 2-3 rolls,3 Kirin Ichiban big dogs and some etemame for an App....

At $100 per person, you aren't getting the same stuff you can get at all the other sushi places like skipjack tuna, scallops, and lobster.

Yeah. I've heard nothing but good things about Sushi Nozawa as well. Some say that once you try it, you'll never want to go back to any normal sushi restaurant because they will taste inferior. Apparently he overnights his seafood from Japan.
Oh, and  Fuji's. My first Sushi experience. Hahah.

Although I havent been to Masa, Morimoto, or Nobu, my favorite place is Wild Ginger in Englewood NJ. To die for.

Scotty knows what he's talking about. Nozawa has real sushi, not your americanized spider rolls, caterpillar rolls and spicy tuna hand rolls. Easily worth the $100 per person. Most "sushi" places are so far from what real sushi and quality fish really should be, its a shame.
Sorry, I'm a major sushi snob :).

Probably, the best Sushi/Japanese restaurant I've been to by far...

I like 'americanized' sushi. so Nozawa would be a waste of money for me.
I have been to Italy a few times and I hate their pizza. I would rather eat at Pizza Hut then hae 'real' Italian pizza.
I guess it's because I am a MFin American!!!

But... I like my spider rolls.
Actually, some of the large Americanized rolls are just ... too much. My friend ordered a rainbow roll for us once. That's just a waste. Everything's all mis-mashed in there. Impossible to enjoy.

G St. between 2nd and 3rd St. Don't eat at the sushi place across the street that is next to G St pub. There's a reason why there isn't a line over there.

In Boston, I like Ginza and Oishii (the latter is very expensive, but fantastic).
Outside of the city New Ginza (ginza's brother) in Watertown (better atmosphere, same quality).

Ever try Super Fushion in Brookline on Washington street?
You can get traditional sushi and sashimi and it is incredibly fresh. Their maki is fantastic and so creative.
I've tried to get into Oishii but, unless you live close by, it's take out only.
I tired the Sudbury location once, nice place I should go back.

^ Nope, but Fugakyu on Beacon St. in Coolidge Corner is a really good place as well. I miss living down there, but would not want to subject my car to street parking.

I live out in the Western burbs, I like Fugakyu in Sudbury. But seriously, if you ever get to Brookline try Super Fusion. Only trouble is the place is very small, maybe seating for 15, lot of locals do takeout.
We tried to get in last week but could not, Garni on Harvard Street (about half way between Beacon Street and Boylston) was really nice.

this thread is silly because it's not localized. The "best" sushi restaurant may only be the "best" in a certain area.

I've eaten at Nobu, and I have thought about Masa but haven't been

First time my coworkers and I went to Fuji's, there was a freaking line - and we got there 30 minutes before it opened (11am I think). One of the sushi chef was my coworker's friend back in HS so he gave us the good stuff - hamachi collar, yellowtail sashimi, soft shell crab that just kept coming, and whatever else we blurted out. Fuji's doesn't have the best sushi, but probably best bang for the buck sushi.

There's many great sushi places in Honolulu. I am japanese, so i am particular about what i eat, and where i eat it. I'd rather have sashimi, it's just like sushi, but you don't get filled up w/ rice. I really like izakaya's, where you eat lots of small dishes and drink the night away.
Best sushi place was shimaya in outer tokyo. We ordered different things, some items were $140!!! Needless to say for two the bill was over $800.
If you don't really appreciate what you are eating, the price will haunt you.

the classic cliche'. Fresh Sushi in MN... Yeah I know, even in Boston it's brought in from other ports - we don't have yellowtail in the water around here.
Patience, Sushi is like a wave across the US, "if you build it they will come".

True enough, but strangely, the best sushi I've ever had was in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Small place ran by a Japanese family and everything tasted surprisingly fresh. Wish I could remember the name.
Supposedly, the best sushi place here in Portland is Saburo's although one of the main reasons people like it, large portions, isn't a big plus for me. I prefer rolls that you can actually eat in one bite and be able to taste all the flavors at once. Not worth the 30min-1 hour wait to get in. I prefer Gaya Gaya on W. Burnside.

Maui's really commercialized now, i go for business there about once a month.
Shipping kills us here, and since we have been trackless for almost 3 years now, I really just wanna move somewhere, and i went to school in olympia, wa. I always wanted to move back to the PNW, and since we have no kids, now would be the best time. I need help coaxing the missus still.

The best sushi I've had was from the Sushi Den (http://www.sushiden.net/) in landlocked Denver. The owner's brother ships fresh fish from Japan 2-3 times/week. The smoked salmon is something I dream about.

Nobu is pretty good, but it's really freaking expensive.
We usually go to Blue Ribbon Sushi (http://www.blueribbonrestaurants.com/restaurants.asp?nav=ln_rests_sushi_man&content=rests_sushi_man_main)in Tribeca once a year or so. Not quite as expensive as Nobu, and more traditional... Also one of the few places you can get jellyfish... They also usually have a fantastic otoro and ama ebi.

Kickin' it west coast style ... you can't beat "SACHII SUSHI" in Beautiful Whistler British Columbia...not cheap...but it rocks the party...always good to roll a nice cold bottle of expensive Sake while you at it!
Good times!
