Republic I absolutely love for fast relatively cheap Thai food, yes. I like the atmosphere too and the cool looking people strolling in and out. It's definitely not a dinner place for a night out but more for lunch or late lunch.
Balthazar just simply rocks and has for years - you're right!

Evo is hitting all of the batali/bastianich houses with Esca, Lupa, Babbo, etc.
There is a place on Bond Street called Mercat that is good for Tapas, and I will remember some more lately.
Another good place on Bond street is called Il Buco. Really nice romantic place for a date or nice dinner with wife, etc. It's in an antique store setting so its really comfortable, and has great food.

My wife and I are fans of restaurants from Celebrity Chefs...a bonus being close to NYC. But, Batali's restaurants are too "Old World". A lot of the menu at Babbo, and Lupa are very Old World Italian. Excellent food...but not ordinary, modern or classic style. The type of food my old grandmother would make...throw nothing out...eat all parts of the animal. Ox tail ragu, knuckles, or someones foot.
His a great chef...but too out there. I think part of the reason he got the boot from Food Network...I work in TV and Emeril's show got axed yesterday from FN too.
heightsgtltd
01-11-2008, 04:26 PM
Gotta disagree with you Kevin in some ways.
Batali uses offal and other parts, but he puts a very modern spin on these dishes, not at all like what an Italian grandma would come up with.

Not that I have anything against transplants into any metropolitan area, but whenever there's a large percentage of transplants in a particular city like NY, there's gentrification and an overall loss of character in the neighborhoods that once brought the city its fame. Cuisine is one the first things to suffer where you now have some many businesses open up which really don't have a good handle on the pulse of the city.

thats' 100% right although manhattan has pretty much always been a place of 1/2 transplants. The thing is now there's getting to be so many more that it's sucking the character out of alot of city. It will eventually cycle back though.
like NY, there's gentrification and an overall loss of character in the neighborhoods that once brought the city its fame.

That's the feeling across many a neighborhood in NY nowadays. The areas across the East River in Brooklyn and Queens are another prime example.
These Hipsters like the image of these culture filled ethnic neighborhoods but when they move in, they bring the wrong kinds of businesses and with their money start to alter the neighborhoods to suit their proclivities.

WHAT?! I have never been, but it is reviewed as one of the top! Sad to hear.
I was however very impressed with L.20 that just opened there. One of the best meals I have ever had. The Chef, Laurent Gras used to be in NY some years ago and is IMHO almost peerless
Never heard of it. My work travel budget has had a cut, so my regular Chicago/Boston trips will slow down for maybe the rest of the year. Bummer, though good for my belly and $.

 what's so interesting? Your profile says portland oregon so I was curious how you knew was all. Seems pretty straightforward to me.
Guess I was the one making assumptions. I apologize.
nope. Never one. Are they notable? Link me
Nothing quoteworthy - I just travel (work and pleasure) a lot, eat a lot and post a few things here. I like this subtopic on the LGT list.

You looked on opentable?

Places like Babbo. Luppa and Daniel takes res 30 days before If you want in on a particular you need to call when they open exactly 30 days because they book the entire day. It is pretty nutz. We have had to plan our dinners a month out.
Talk about building up an appetite!

That's why opentable rocks, it often allows you to get around that.

Opentable will not accept yet either.
The only place I have been not able to get a res for over the years is Per Se.
We mark the times on our calendar I call right as they open.

Some are 30, some are 4 weeks to the day. Some are 2 months, I forget who those were.

I had the best luck with Per Se by calling and asking to be on waiting list for cancellations. If you can scare up another couple, there are reservations for 4 on opentable pretty often
it's always fun to wait in the mob at babbos

Sophie's Cuban take out. Random spots in the city. My usual is Pernil (slow roasted pulled pork) w/onions over beans w/rice, sweet plaintains, and sometime pressed green plantains
Cheap eats but oh so good! The one I go to the most is on Madison and 33rd (now Tina's Cuban). My original is on New St. off Exchange Place.

Not exactly NYC but....
Lorena's in Maplewood was friggin awesome. Went there Sat night. Me & the wife.
BYOB
I started with a Warm Duck Confit, with julienned green apple & endive on top, with some walnuts & roquefort cheese, with an AMAZING vinigrette on top. The combo of warm/cold, soft & crunchy was amazing. Wife had the sweet pea soup with lump crabmeat. Excellent as well.
For entree I had Yellowfin tuna, pan seared & nice & rare in the middle, served over sunchockes & asparagus with a horseradish-beet emulsion that although looked liek ketchup, tasted out of this world. Wife had the filet mignon, which was prepared perfectly.
Excellent place. Two thumbs up.

OK...here we go.
Daniel was stupidly good. On 65th between Park & Mad, but practically on Park Ave.
The place is as pretty as I remember. The staff very attentive, but at the same time, not on top of you.
They sat us at the same table as our 5th Anniversary....nice touch.
Amuse Bouche of asparagus mousse, puree of cauliflour, and a pickled fish of sorts that I could not understand what the guy said.
Champagne cart with 4 styes, wheeled to our table for excellent explanation & pouring. They did not do this last time. Nice addition. Had the Tattinger Rose.
Went with the 6 course tasting menu. We were going to add the cheese course in as well, but the portions were sizeable enough that we opted out of it. I also got the wine pairings with each.
Of the combined 12 plates we received, 11 were unbelieveably good, and one was just excellent. I got a crab salad-esque plate that was a bit too creamy & masked the flavor of the food more that I would care for. But everything else was excellent. Dessert was great, and we got a extra dessert from the kitchen for our occasion, along with a small basket of fresh baked mini-muffins, that were so good, I felt I was being a pig but didn't care.
Price was astronimical. But this was a special occasion.

Went to Blue Smoke last night.
27th St between Park Ave & Lex.
Friggin awesome. VERY child friendly without being a kids place. I had the Chipotle Chicken Wings for appy - very good, and the rib sampler as my entree which was even better. I was so full, I passed on dessert, and for me that's an accomplishment, since I'm such a fatso. Wife had the iceberg lettuce w/ blue cheese & the Fried Chicken both which were excellent. Daughter had the Mac & Cheese w/ fries, and was one of the best M&C I have had in a long time. Good prices also, we got out of there under $100.
I would definately recommend.

Blue Smoke is really good and they have a great jazz club right downstairs where you can eat the same food while hearing great music.

I remember seeing that in the magazine. There are a lot of bad places on that list.
The Palm, Smith and Wollenskys, one if by land, Kobe Club I could go on all suck
Some places are good, but it reads like a shill list for the places that are supposed to be good.

one if by land is useless unless you're getting engaged or celebrating a special anniversary.
I never was a big fan of Smith & Wollenskys. Never been to the palm or kobe.
Sammys is actually not a bad place though.
I have a friend at work that claims he grew up in the east village. He moved away at like 6 years old & lived in Texas till 4 years ago.
Anyways, "Mr NYC" has never been to Peter Lugers & has been bugging me to go with him & his wife after work for a while now. He wants to walk from his apt over the bridge to lugers & back :lol: I keep telling him it's no big shakes but he insists they wanna go so I'm stuck being their brooklyn tour guide for a night
