I've had good luck with most of the Yellow Tail (Austrailian) wines, if you are looking for something affordable.

Great idea for a thread!
Esp. since you can have expensive wines, and cheap wines that are good or bad...
John, I went to Stags leap in Napa last April. I am a fan of their wines.
I'm cheap so I usually go with Voga for pinot & Black opal for the reds

+1 for yellow tail.
my current fav:
Clif Wine: The Climber - Red - ~$18

Rosemount is dependable, but if you have a local place that carries a variety of Aussie Shiraz, there are ones for the same price that are a little more interesting :)

Bought a bottle this evening. It's hit or miss. Had 4 bottles over the course of a week or so, and 2 were great and 2 were so-so. The 2 great ones had a great smoked flavor, the other two didn't have that flavor.

Worthy around $25 a bottle, William hill reserve $37 a bottle, or Frei Brothers for around $18 a bottle, all Cabs. Don't really like Chards unless they are Steel barrel fermented. For whites I prefer Reislings and mostly German Dry Reislings like Dr. Hiedemanns-Bergwiler is a good Floral yet crisp white that's only $10 a bottle...:icon_mrgr

Agree on steel over oak for Chardonnays ;)
I really love Whites from Loire area of france like vouvray, Sancerre, etc.

^I will have to give them a try.... About 8 years ago I was hooked on a white wine from Cal. It was called Thousand flowers from the Hop kiln winery. Had a bad run in 2000 and stopped ordering it...
2006 Hop Kiln, A Thousand Flowers 12/750ml
53% Chardonay, 17% Gewurztraminer, 13% Chenin Blanc, 9% Muscat Canelli, 8% Sauvignon Blanc. Fermented in stainless steel tanks. 3,073 cases produced.
Brillant, light straw/green colored, this wine has full floral and tropical fruit flavors with a "core" of spicy green apple. These delicate tropical flavors leave a mouth full of fruit and spice. Delightful. Perfect sipping wine or to serve with light style foods, cheeses and fruits. A Picnickers's favorite!
Gold Medal - 2007 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition
National Retail Price: $17.99 / bottle
I was getting it for $11 back then...:icon_mrgr

Rosemount Traminer Reisling... ~$8 a bottle. Flavorful, but yet not overwhelming.

Make sure you don't confuse Stags' Leap and Stag's Leap.
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars - http://cask23.com/ GOOOOD stuff but pricey.
Stags' Leap Winery - http://stagsleap.com/ Usually better than decent and more affordable but some say they are taking advantage of the Stags'/Stag's Leap name.

Rodney Strong -Cabernet- often on sale for $10. This is a KILLER $10 bottle
Geyser Peak -Cabernet- $14-$18
Murphy Goode -Cabernet- $22
These are a few smaller California Central Coast Wines. They are all caried by major distrubuters but probably don't have huge distrubution. If you see them you have to try:
Storr's -Chardonnay- $16
Cinnabar -Mercury Rising- $13 (This one is a bordeaux style wine. Awesome for $13)
Bonny Doone Vineyards "Big House Red" -Red Table Wine- $10

J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet - between $15 and $20.
As far as whites go grab a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc if you haven't tried one before.

I actually prefer the non-Riserva. Has a better flavor to me, and that extra few $$$ in my pocket makes me feel better also.

+1 on the yellowtail. don't like their chard, i think it's got too much bite. i like their reserves, usually stick with cab sav before and shiraz for after dinner.
good bang for buck when it comes to wines.
another good one was barefoot's merlot, pretty solid for the price.
i don't really drink whites so no help on that one.

Little Penguin Shiraz for $7 a bottle is hard to beat in my opinion. If I want to spend a bit more (and can find a bottle) Penfolds Bin 389 ($20) is a nostalgic favorite.

I find most of them to be a bit "oily". I like them, then I found Viogner.

Viognier is one of my favorite white grapes.
As I said earlier, I really like a lot of white's from Loire Valley (sancerre, Viognier, some Chenin Blanc)
