Has anyone had really good rum from the Caribbean?

I don't mean Bacardi, I mean rum from Martinique like Clement, or Barbancourt from Haiti?

It's really good, and can be drunk straight and not mixed.

The ones from Martinique actually smell like how the air smells on the islands..like sugar cane

My favourites are Pusser's, Lamb's and Appleton's, in that order. ;)

I have had Pusser's but I dont think I have had the other two.

Coffee-colored, mahogany hue. Brown sugar, coffee grounds, and molasses aromas with a whiff of vapor. A soft entry leads to a dry light-to medium-bodied palate with molasses, dark raisin, sharp white pepper, and tar notes. Finishes with a drying fade of mocha and tannin.

Nice amber color and sweet nose. The rum is both mellow and has a slight edge that is actually inviting. Tons of flavors, including vanilla, toffee and a hint of oak. A great sipping rum.

I just had some Appletons last night. Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, is an Appleton. His mother's family. One of my co-workers was at Strawberry Hill with him in May (his estate in JA). I have his personal email address....big

Black Seal is excellent, as is Cacique (from VZ).

I have, but then, I lived in Puerto Rico and tried most of them while island hopping on my buddies sport fishers (Hatteras, Beltram).

For a real good treat try the Rum Cake from Barbados. I thing you can get them online somewhere. Shit is to die for.
http://www.calypsorumcake.com/customer/success.php

The Tortuga brand ain't to bad either. Can't loose with either of them.

Barbados also mekes a decent rum but the best ones come from PR cuz we are die hard drinkers. ;)

Would Bacardi Anejo make this list? I know you can't get it stateside... just don't know how it compares to those others. My folks grabbed me 2 bottles last time they went to Aruba.

Leonardo

Why Cuba? You can't buy Bacardi products in Cuba.

It was founded there but that is it!

The destilary, bought by the Bacardis in the 1930's in PR:

Also avery big fan of the Captain's Private Stock.
I've had and loved Planters Gold Pyrat XO reserve from Anguilla BWI.
I had something from Belize that was real good.

Worst ever was 10 Cane.

How come Bars never have good sipping rum on the shelf?
It's always Barcadi or reg ole Captain Morgans

You can close this thread up now.....

Probably the best rum for the money IMO(and many others).

You can go more expensive but it becomes a hard fight of diminishing returns.

Leonardo

Yeah, but I don't want to give Fidel Castro another cent as that rum is owned by the Cuban Goverment instead of helping others, you'd be helping him.

Bacardi and Cuba today:
Bacardi drinks are not found in Cuba today. The main brand of rum in Cuba is called Havana Club a formally private company expropriated by the government. Havana Club was not a Bacardi brand, though Bacardi later bought the brand from the original owners, the Arechabala family, who had it seized from them by Castro's government after the revolution without compensation. In partnership with French company Pernod Ricard, Havana Club is sold all over the world, except for the United States and its territories.

Try Havana Club if you get a chance. It's worth it(as long as your political views don't clash with consuming things from cuba)...

Also, another fantastic rum:

A rum liqueur that I just tried out in the Bahamas which was really great:

I can enjoy a fine cuban cigar without the views cuz they aren't owned by the state like the rum company is. That is all!!!

Screech has got some real depth. Sometimes people get thrown off by the name and horror stories that its really strong. I don't think it's strong at all though...
