The vehicle in question is a 96 legacy wagon. When in motion I hear a low whirring sound coming from the rear axle area/left wheel region. As I accelerate the whrring gets louder and more high pitched.
Sounds similiar to a 4 wheel drive vehicle engaged in 4 low.
Any ideas as im not too knowledable when it comes to these things

Not grinding? Sounds like a wheel bearing possibly. Are the axle boots ripped?

no, theres no grinding. Its tough to explain the noise, its almost like a moaning. It doesnt sound like its caused by anything bumping or hitting together. Its a very constant noise that builds with acceleration. And theres no breaks or ticking in the noise.
What do the axle boots look like and where might I find them (sorry but I really dont know much about suspension stuff and Im trying to learn)

Really sounds like wheel bearings. I don't know about the '96 models, but my WRX were non-servicable and had to be replaced.

Really sounds like wheel bearing(s), but the boots are at the ends of the axles - one at the joint where it meets the rear differential, and the other where it meets the wheel hub.
