I'm looking to pick up a '97 or '98 Legacy wagon. Is there any specific problem areas I should look for, anything I need to be wary of or give extra attention to when purchasing a used Legacy?

The most common problem is the cylinder head gaskets leaking. I got lucky - mine went at 190K miles, but I've read of it happening at all different mileages. The rear seal starts leaking at some point too. So ask if those have been fixed yet, and if/when the timing belt and water pump were replaced.

My head gasket went in my '97 Outback at about 120K for a car that age I would make sure it has already blown and been fixed or I wouldn't buy one.
