Center caps needed?

I have some new wheels but don't have the center caps yet. Do I need them to keep debris from the wheel bearing or can I go ahead and put the wheels on? Thanks,

Alright, I gather that the retaining nut is not actually "exposed" without the center cap and it is alright to put the wheels on without the center caps, correct?

huh? the axel nut will show. but if it gets wet or dirty does not really matter
