Do general run of the mill shift knobs (such as the momo ones, etc at the local rice shop) fit our car?

The stock Sti shifter (looks like an UFO) is flaking off, living little pieces of black stuff in my hand and around the shifter console.....

do any of you have the same problem?

thanks!

Off the shelf knobs will generally fit and/or come with adaptor rings.

Any part that you put your hand on that much will show wear but flaking is a bit strange, it shouldn't really be doing that. I say just get a new one, there was a thread recently on choosing shift knobs (use search).

If you get a universal fit MOMO, it will sit on the very top of the shifter unless you come up with your own adapter ring. This effectively will raise the shift knob.

For about a month, I felt like a rally driver (or a bus driver) with that thing so high up. I eventually bought a Cobb STS and lowered the knob so that it looks very stock like.

I picked up one of these. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-Mustang-GT-Leather-Shift-Knob-94-2004-2005-2006-07_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33703QQihZ001QQitemZ 110132533833QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) Right price, and looks pretty good, I can take pictures if you want.

Does the Ford thread pattern match and does the GT knob have a retainer for the shift boot?

Could you PM me a few pics? I'm curious to see what it looks like...

The '05+ Mustang thread pattern does match our GT. The Mustang knob does have a ring for the shift boot, HOWEVER, it is huge and you'll never be able to get boot over that ring without trimming it down (with a dremel or something). I installed a COBB STS at the same time, so the shorter shifter keeps the shift boot flush to the bottom of the knob. I'll take some pics in a few hours when I go to work.

Here are some pics. You'll see the ring (plastic) at the bottom, notice how large it is, and that it would need to be trimmed down a lot to get the shift boot around it. I'd do that (and may still), but I'm a bit afraid about if it'll scratch the boot at all.

Also, sorry about the car being dirty. We're still getting quite a bit of pollen down here this late in the year.

I've got the Greddy knob (friend gave me one he had lying around) and I have to say I really like it. Its weighted unlike the stock knob, and it makes shifting much smoother even on the stock shifter. It does sit slightly lower than the stock knob so it gives you a bit of a shorter throw.

The only thing about it is that it doesn't have a ring to clip the boot into like the factory one. But I hear that once you install a short shifter it lowers it even more which holds the boot down more tightly. BTW the silver sticker matches our trim nicely.

rocknroll, is that shifter aluminium or plastic?

I'll second the mustang shifter. Installed it just the other day (also on a cobb short shifter) and think it's awesome. Looks great and it has a nice size to grip - for me at least :)

Mine is not plastic. I think they do sell a plastic version but I wouldn't bother with it as you'd lose the extra weight that helps make shifting easier.

ture, but i had a aluminium one that use to get crazy hot in the summer time, so i am trying to avoid that this time...

also where did you get it from?

That's true mine does get a little hot in the sun, and will prob be freezing cold in the winter

My friend gave me an extra one he had, but you can buy them right from Greddys site:

weighted:

derlin plastic:

Of course for the same price I'd probably get the kartboy one that has the ring for the shift boot. That one does come in derlin plastic or aluminum.

I put on a Momo F16 Carbon shifter and it sat way up in the air. I got creative with the Dremel and a hax saw - now it's a little shorter than stock with the normal shift linkage... I also took that pointy, bottom part of the shifter off. I slid the shifter boot over the bottom of the shifter where the pointy part threaded in. The color matches the trim in the car PERFECTLY.

I'll have to take a pic.

Yeah. Nicely weighted with a great shape - and it says Momo like the steering wheel... Chicks think I drive some exclusive Italian car...

get the STi shift knob from ebay (~$40). I've had it for a year and absolutely love it. Best shift knob I have ever had. I sold the momo shift knob as it was too bulky and was getting hot

the only problem with the sti knob, is that the legacy gt is only a 5 speed not a 6 speed

I have a F16 knob but mine is solid. It doesn't have the slot through the middle and mine is covered with a thin layer of leather.

It doesn't look it, but it is the most ergonomic shifter that I have used. If you look at the top view, it is shaped like the way your palm would cup over it. I have mine pointed a little bit off-center so it fits my palm perfectly.

i was checking on line and i keeps seeing 5 speed knobs and 6 speed sti knobs (without shift patterns) and they are listed as different....

this is the 5 speed
http://www.japanparts.com/images/Ima...base=1&no=9729 (http://www.japanparts.com/images/ImageFromDB.php?base=1&no=9729)

and this is the 6 speed
http://www.japanparts.com/images/Ima...?base=1&no=578 (http://www.japanparts.com/images/ImageFromDB.php?base=1&no=578)

they look the same, but the 6 speed costs 10 bucks less....does anyone know if there is a difference?

The 6 speed knob is shorter. It will thread in but there will be a gap on the boot. The 6 speed tranny uses a collar to shift to reverse.

I just modded the mustang shifter I have and it looks better ;) As was mentioned about the ring at the bottom (see the pics on page 1) With the cobb sts and this screwed on it doesn't need to be held up. So I just took a hack saw and cut the entire ring part off, leaving about 3/8" of a tube sticking out from the bottom. With the knob screwed on tight, the boot actually cannot go down anymore, as there is no more to go. It looks perfect (I know, pics... but I can't till next week at least, sry :( Just hold the handle with a towel wrapped several times to make sure you don't scratch anything. If you don't have the sts, then you could put it on, pick up the surround and then put electrical tape underneath to prevent it from falling down. That works very well as I had done that on the previous shifter I had as it sat higher.

Interesting. I may have to try that. :)
