Yo mang, You CAN'T GO BACK!! I'm serious. I've been doing the Press for awhile now, and everytime I try any other method it's just GROSS. The only other way I can have coffee now is an espresso machine.

I don't know if you have the Store 'Ross' near where you live. But I just picked up a $40 dollar Press for like $14 bucks. and it was one of the nice ones that came with matching cups. ;) Another place you can buy presses for cheap is on Ebay. I picked one up for $20, and that included shipping.

I have the Starbucks Barista Solo. My wife doesn't drink coffee so I just need to make one cup at a time and like that it brews directly into a travel mug. It does have its issues though.....

-If you use the supplied metal filter you need a coarse grind or else you'll have grounds in your cup. Solution = use paper filters
-On occasion it will just drip onto the floor, for some more often than others. This seems to be a design flaw and I've read many theories/solutions. One is to remove the spring loaded stopper on the filter basket. Another is to enlarge the breather holes on the mug lid. Has only happened to me a couple times so I haven't resorted to trying to remedy it yet.
-There are many cases of the machine overheating, failing to work, and even catching fire. I have not experienced this as of yet. It seems it may be consistent with multiple consecutive uses or not starting with cold water.

Wow, hardly seems worth it does it? Not a lot of choices for a single cup machine with timer though.

The coffee maker isnt as much of importance as the beans.

Supposedly the best coffee comes from espresso machines, and if you arent a fan of espresso you simply add hot water to taste, this will get you the most flavour from your beans and a damn good cup of "americano" coffee.

I would recommend you get a coffee roaster as well and by some good green beans, the roasters can be had for fairly cheap ~$100 and the green beans dont go stale like roasted ones do, its also surprisingly very easy to do and you can get the exact darkness level you prefer.

Sorry mang, but the maker is just as important. That's like saying,..... The way you distill Alcohol is not as important as the quality of the ingredients. Sure there's different ways to go about it, but in the end only certain ways produce the BEST QUALITY. They BOTH make a HUGE difference.

I totally agree with you on the beans though. I don't think that I'd go as far as to start roasting them myself, but My hats off to those that do. :D

+1

I bought 3 expensive ($50+) Mr. Coffee coffee makers in my life and every single one of them had major design flaws. One would leak water, another would leak coffee (would drip right down the spout and behind the caraffe), and the third one just simply made crappy coffee.

Krups is your best bet.

Right now I have a Delonghi that is pure awesome.

I have several -

$35 @ Costco Mr. Coffee - works well, and brews the coffee at 5:20am so I have time to grab a cup before I head out the door

~$30 french press which I use on the weekends when I have time

$170 Tassimo machine - makes decent coffee for a single-serving size, and only takes about 1 min. to heat the water; 2 minutes from on to a cup of coffee. One of the only single serving coffee "pod" machines to also do a real espresso/cappuccino/latte.

~$90 Delonghi Espresso machine - great basic espresso machine. Supposedly makes hotter water/steam and produces better espresso than the Krups models.

Keurig single serving machine at work - has the best variety of single-serving machines. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters owns them, but they are also committed to offering other brands. Home units start at ~$100-130.

Flavia single serving machine at work - just replaced with the much better Keurig system. Home units start about where the Keurig system is priced.

Does Nespresso do coffee as well as espresso? I though you could only do espresso products - straight, cappuccino, latte, etc. We have one of those at one of my other offices, but I haven't used it yet...

you can do a double single pod espresso, or they have lungo pods which are sized for more "american style" coffee

You can with the Keuirg home systems!

I find the pods/k-cups/t-discs very convenient for a quick cup-a-joe. It's quick and makes a decent cup.

Also convenient so I don't have to drink my wife's "weak" brew, and she doesn't have to drink my motor oil. We both get what we want.

It's also good to keep a couple of other brewers around, for when you want that special blend...

(Green Mountain Coffee makes a GREAT seasonal "Island Coconut" coffee!)

On the Keurig site look under the Accessories Tab....it's called "My K-Cup" it retails for $14.95. Basically it replaces the pod and allows you to use your own grind.

Yes in some systems, but not with the nespresso one. There are some comromises considering how cheap the machine costs for what you get.

The more expensive machines you have a choice of using pods or your own grind.

As you can see the most important "M" mentioned is the grinder. Although one can taste the difference with a good machine & maker, if the grind of the coffee is not right then nothing else will fall in place. If you use your alcohol analogy, it is like serving Single Malt Scotch over ice. You still have good alcohol but have ruined the flavors with the ice.

FWIW, I recently purchased the Rancilio Rocky & Silvia. Mmmm good!

If you want a coffee maker, by all means get the kind that brews into a thermal carafe. The ones that use a glass pitcher and heating plate cook the coffee and it's pretty bad after 20 minutes.

That being said, the ones made by Capresso are supposed to be very good.

Yup. I know Bunn doesn't recomend using it more than 30 minutes or the coffee is toast. I always preheat a thermos with boiling (or at least really hot if I don't have time) water for at least 5 minutes and as soon as the coffee is done poor it all in and it'll stay piping hot all day long. :)

I did way too much research, if there is such a thing, before buying my Rancillio couple. I also spent much time over at coffeegeeks.com You should see how some of those folks MOD their espresso machines.

Remember this too...

Everything I make, always tastes better then $tarbucks. I too like a good French Press coffee, Moka, & drip. My tool of the trade for drip coffee costs about $5 if you already have a thermos or pot.

I don't doubt that one bit. It's funny when I bring in a thermos and can't drink it, occasionally I offer it to others. People always say "oh, I can't drink coffee without cream and/or sugar". I insist that yes, in fact, they can. It just can't be charbucks. Usually people are surprised by good smooth coffee....it's not hard folks!

IMHO, sugar and cream are band aids for bad coffee...

Guys, if you like good coffee, you owe it to yourself to try the Costa Rican French Roast at Costco. 2.5 lbs. for $7.00. Far better than Starbucks. They had a limited run of Ethiopian after the tsunami hit the Sumatra region, which was the best stuff I ever tasted. Sadly, the discontinued it once the Sumatra deliveries resumed. I even wrote a letter to the CEO of Costco in protest.

I kind of agree with this recommendation. I am always willing to try out new roasts as long as they are:
1. Small batch roasts.
2. Roasted in the last week.
3. Beans are not charred.

There are plenty of small roasters all over the place (PNW) that I would have a hard time trying them all.

But, ultimately, it does come down to what tastes good to you.

Chiming in again. One of the makers I have been interested in trying, but cant justify the cost, is an electric vacuum press. Its supposed to be just as good as a french press, but uh, electric and vacuum-y. Its a complicated system though, and cleaning it seems a bit too much. ut its interesting.

Also of note on roasters, I try to support my local ones as much as possible. It doesnt hurt that there are two awesomely delicious ones in town. So if you're ever in Milwaukee, do yourself a favor and stop in at a Stone Creek Coffee or Alterra Roaster.

I can't believe no one has posted how to make swedish coffee. All you need is a pot!

10-12 cups water
1 cup regular-grind coffee
1 egg
1 cup ice cold water

Bring water to a boil and remove from heat. In a small bowl, mix coffee and egg. Add a little hot water to coffee and egg mixture, then pour mixture into hot water. Stir and heat until it comes to a rolling boil. Remove from heat and pour in 1 cup of ice cold water. Let set for 10 minutes before serving. (The egg and grounds settle to the bottom, leaving the coffee a dark honey color.)

Our Coffee:
Nobody roasts coffee like Peet's. We roast our coffee by hand in small batches to create our signature flavor. You will notice the difference as soon as you open this bag. The color is dark chocolate and the aroma is intense and very fragrant. Roasted coffee tastes best when it is fresh, so the coffee we roast today will be en route to you as quickly as possible. Please visit our web site from more information on how we select, blend and roast the more than 30 coffees we offer. Also, our web site can help you discover the coffee to best suit your flavor preferences and brewing methods

I have been using my Nespresso machine for about 6 months now and I love it.

It uses Nespresso pods, and the espresso and Capuccino that it makes is really amazing.

There is a frother accessory that makes the milk just like you get from restaurants.

We have three offices (plus home) with a Bunn BTX Thermal brewer, a Braun, a Krups, a Mr. Coffee, one of the Kuerig K-cup models, a Zojurushi Fresh Brew, and a couple of French presses. We even have two employees who roast their own beans, and Green Mountain coffee is a customer of ours.

We grind the beans right before we brew: that seems to make the most difference in taste. We use Cuisinart Burr Mill grinders: loud as hell, though.

All of the brewers save one have thermal carafes: that's now all we buy. I like the Krups Aroma Control the best of all of them for home, followed by the Braun. At work the Bunn with thermal carafe rocks.

The Bunn is popular because it's fast and has good taste. The K-Cup is fast and convenient, but the cups are expensive. The Zojurushi we have takes #3 filters, which we can never find, so we cut down #4: I wouldn't buy one again.

Places like coffeegeek have lots of reviews, and of course CR weighs in. CR rates them on features only, not taste: glass carafe.

I received the Keurig B70 for Christmas and really enjoy the convenience of it. With over 150 flavor KCups to choose from, it will take about a year until I know what's my favorite.

Here is the one I have. We've been using it for years. The single shot capsules they use are great. You can make any strength and flavor of coffee, expresso or whatever you want one cup at a time. takes about 10 seconds to make a cup of coffee. It's expensinve, but if you have a $5-10 a day mocha habit; it pays for it's self pretty quickly.

there's no magic to good coffee. a proper grind, proper water temps and that's about it. try it the old fashioned way....heat the water, mix the grinds, let settle in the bottom of the cup and drink.

Nice.

What I like about Nespresso is they use the same quality components in the cheaper ones as they do in the fancy ones

+1 ... we just got a new Krups and it makes good coffee!Maybe it's my imagination but the aroma control system - they hold some water with the grounds for a minute or so before releasing it to the carafe - seems to make it taste better.

That said, the Zojirushi has an outer chamber around the filter basket that seems to do the same thing.

If you drink a lot of coffee, the Bunn is neat as the water is pre-heated so you can make a 10 cup pot in three minutes. But it does not have a timer so you can't set it off automatically at 'oh dark thirty.

not your imagination at all....the coffee tastes better when the grounds are allowed to steep for a minute or two. I hit 'start' on mine and wait about 90 seconds before putting the carafe under it to do the same thing.

I got mine from American Express for a couple hundred bucks a couple years ago during their rewards wishlist thing. I probably wouldn't drop the full $800 on it outright, but they do have a nice product line. We actually got the in-law a D300
for christmas last year. We've never had any issues with ours and neither have they. I usually get my refills the next day if I order early in the morning so running out isn't really an issue.

I really like their special edition coffee right now, the one that comes in the metallic blue capsule.

We have 2 nespresso stores in the city which are kind of fun to go to.

Their whole vibe is like the Apple of espresso makers.

It's awsome that you can just open the cupboard and have a wide selection of strenghths, flavors and decaff's that can be ready in about 30 seconds with no measuring and no mess. Standing there listening to my coffee maker first thing in the morning is one of the better parts of the day. It's just so reliable, consistant, predictable and delicious you can't beat it. It's really cool when guests are over and you can make everybody their favorite coffee in nothing flat.

Yup, you just press the steam button and it froths the milk. It has a permanent frothing attachment with two froth settings(caffe latte and cappuccino) and it feeds off the same water tank as the coffee. It's quick too. It only takes about 20 seconds for the steam to be ready. I'm a mocha latte junkie so I'm lovin it.:)
