Well as some may know this is the only model tweaked by Sti in a long time.
Only 400 built with only two being sold outside of Japan. New Zealand got 2.
Make that 3 - another one has just been imported into NZ and is under going compliance.

Yup thanks for the info. Docklands here in Melbourne got a hot view early last year I think from memory. Subaru NZ were kind enough to show us one example to a select crowd of ppl. Just testing the waters.
Now where is that darn Liberty/Legacy STi GT MY05 model........????
Adam.
Isn't that the old body style Legacy? That would not be a current model then, right?

what is the difference engine-wise? Is it just a "non-detuned" sti motor putting out the STI advertised 300/300 or is it better? Looks awesome, I want one

The S401 is I believe running the 206Kw Gentleman's Agreement outfit still but has been beefed up in certain areas. Never on sale in Australia although was available in NZ, Japan and I believe the UK.

We haven't had an interesting Legacy for quite a while.... so no, not here
(Sorry guys but the 3.0R Spec B with a 0-60 time of 7 seconds is not "interesting")
I did speak to Subaru UK a couple of weeks ago (I've been trying to get a JDM GT Spec B but no one can get it through the emissions test) and they said they might bring in the US GT Limited since we now have the 2.5 Forester or apparently "the 3 Litre (sp!) is very tuneable".
Now we're talking!

The s401 was 216kw - if u look on apexjapan u get a review of the car...
Now went and saw the car today and well looks like someone had there wires crossed. Sadly no s401 it was a s201...
Briefly s201 special WRX Sti with about 220kw factory and a different bodykit.
Interestingly saw some nice Forrester Sti's a Blitzen (looked very nice in black unlike the red ones)
And a white 2000 GTB twin turbo with a few mods. Sti dash - 300km/h speedo, pink stitching steering wheel gear shift. Ram air bellmouth where the foglights used to be.
And installed was an Sti 6 speed manual.....very nice car indeed

Actually, a 1000 was made in production with number #1 and #2 owned by the president of Subaru.
Dont forget the S201 and S202 as well. There's a lot of special variations, but the S401 is pretty impressive on its own.

There were only 400 for Japan - and i believe some have gone overseas (not sure if they were all officially exported or not).
Needless to say, those who know what they are don't get to see them often (I was cruising with one at a fair clip a couple of days ago, first one i've seen in months).

I know this is an old thread, but does anyone have a dump of the S401 ECU??
