View Full Version : Do YOU have Trans. Problems/Failure

Trying to get an idea of how many people have transmission issues. My LGT is currently in the shop for a bearing in the transmission that may cost ME $1200 to fix if SOA doesn't cover it, do to the UP/DP.
I have seen a lot of threads about AT failure and MT problems and people getting the warranty on STG2 cars. I just don't understand why one dealer will do the work and another won't, it's just stupid.
Well let me know what issues you have and what type of trans.

What does the UP/DP have to do with Tranny failure? This is just ridiculous...
Have you tried on another dealership? More mod friendly?

No, because I gave them permisson to take the Trans apart ,I was worried about doing further damage.
I'll never go back there and ther are a lot of people here who recommend the Dealership.

Then why would a bearing go and not the clutch or a gear?
I just want to know why it went bad. They can't answer even answer that .

I was just giving the dealer answer. I think you're getting the shaft. Not because they're sticking you with the bill, but because others with the same mods have had their problems covered under warranty.

THATS WHAT IS REALLY BOTHERING ME, OTHERS ARE GETTING THE WARRANTY.

take your mods off before you go to the dealer.
it may be dishonest, but are dealers entirely honest? no.

GT...did the dealer actually mention the UP/DP may cause an issue getting the work done under warrantee? Or are you just worried it might come up?
Good luck.

Good luck. They told me that the UP/Dp adds horse power so it could be a problem. I am waiting for the SOA rep to show up.
It's getting frustrated because my car is just sitting there and I have to call them to get answers. The SOA Rep was supposed to show up today but I never got call . The car was dropped off at 8:30 Wednesday morning and it took them until 4:30 on Friday to tell me what the problem was and what I may have to pay.
I didn't take anything off because there are plenty of people here getting warranties with UP/DP installed.

Did they have anything else to say about what happened?
what were the symptoms causing you to bring the car in for service?

So basically you're screwed if it happens again.
This is why you keep all your stock parts and swap them out when going to the dealer. Pain in the ass? Yes. Worth it monetarily? That's up to you. It would be to me (especially if I was only stage 2).

That is great news!! And another reason I am glad I gutted my stock DP instead of going aftermarket.
So what dealer did you go to??

Yep. My transmission was getting tighter and tighter to shift with. Dealership denied my warranty for UP/DP. Of course, I also had stuttering, hesitation, electrical issues, weight distribution issues. Got a half hour for me to rant on how much I hated the 2005 LGT MT?
My solution was to dump the Legacy and switch to Mazda.
The 2005 Subaru LGT MT line is trash, avoid it. Now the LGT Auto I am happy with and will let my wife keep hers.

^ You just got a bad car. My car is fine. First manual I have ever driven...so I wouldn't say that I drove it "correctly" right away. If it can take the "mistakes" I have made, then its good in my book. 10k miles on stg2 later everything is tip top. The only issues is the fact that the passenger side is slightly higher than the driver side. According to others on the forum...this is within tolerances and other experience it too. I'll probably get the iONs checked out when its time for the 30 k.

Not really an option for me. Ther were plenty of other LGT's going to dealers and getting work coverd by SOA with STG 2 parts.
If it happpens again I am going to a different dealer that is more MOD firendly.

The symptoms were a whining/humming coming from the shifter. It got louder the higher the speed. Shifting was fine and driving was normal it was just a noise.
A bearing in the trans had gone bad but they don't know why, ther are a couple other members with the same problem. I assume that is the reason they fixed it.

2005 5EAT trouble at 48k miles. The sports shifter mode kicks the CEL and throws three codes. So far they have no idea what is causing the problem. They have replaced the TCU, throttle body, a bunch of relays and sensors, and went through all the wiring. I think the bill for the warranty work is well over 10k now. After talking to the shop manager (only master tech for subaru there) i dont think replacing the whole tranny will fix it, and with a cost of almost 7k i dont think they want to gamble too much. I am currently waiting for a decision to be made on what they want to do about it. Tranny always has and still does work right, just throws a fit when using sports mode.

Good to hear this got fixed. I was worried for a bit, and also felt a bit of responsibilty since I was saying you should just take it in. Let me know if this is a transfer case/center diff problem. If so, then I'm seeing this come up quite a bit. I'm guessing this is why they decided to warrenty it. Then played with your head about the "one time deal."
SOA needs to take some sort of stance about modding. Subaru's have a huge aftermarket, customers are going to modify thier cars. As the warrenty work, it should not be so much about what dealer you go to, what service manager you get, or whos palm you grease...

This is absolutely true. Unfortunately for now SOA is playing it safe and denying all modified work - it all comes down to what dealer you go to. My dealership (Mark Miller, SLC, UT) claimed that an SOA rep was flagged to visit their shop and inspect the car ANY time clutch or transmission work was performed to be covered under warranty. This was ultimately to deny warranty coverage to those who modified. Visual inspection: Up, down or cat back - you were voided. If you were voided and the dealer did the work, the dealer eats the cost if they cannot lay it on you.
To me it is a fine line, although it isn't my area of expertise.
My word of wise : Keep your parts to go back to stock if you have to. Don't screw your dealership. If you broke it, own up to it and fix it on your dime. Most of us are screwed because of the thousands of WRX owners who broke their trannies and called foul on SOA - when it was clearly their faults.
I just happened to be one of those who had a legitimate claim - but was denied due to Stage 2. Mark Miller refused period - so I dumped the car rather than pay thousands in repair bills for a crappy Subaru transmission.

^ I guess that's the point. I don't think G.T.Subie or myself were being dishonest, or trying to take advantage of the dealer. This particular problem has been exhibited on several non-modded cars as well. If my clutch blew up, it would be my fault. Destroyed the synchro's or gears, my fault. A bearing in the transfer case? Not my fault.

I never tried to hide the mods on my car. I told them up front when they aked if the car was modded. I also don't think a bearing in the Trans would be my fault at all.

Got the car back today:icon_mrgr. Must say that it is shifting much better then it was proir to the problem. I guess I just never noticed the problem prior to the noise. It seems to smoother through the gears, were before it seemed very notchy.

Bad bearing in the center diff (where the shaft comes in) = blown center diff and the case was scorched all the way through.

Funny, all the same P/N's. Clearly, we have both abused and modded our cars in the same way, so it must be OUR fault.
I've noticed since my car got fixed that it seems the distrobution of power is better. It's much less inclined to spin the inside front wheel now, interesting.

I am currently having the same problem with my unmodded 2004 FXT. I thought it was the rear diff, but the dealer believes it is the center support bearing. A link below shows the whole story that I posted on Subaruforester.com. They had several bad bearing that were fresh out of the box. They are installing a wrx center support bearing because that solved the humming sound. I will see......
