Hey guys,
By recent demand through replies in other posts along with several private messages I will give a quick how-to on running a DVD player on your OEM Navigation Unit.
I would rate this project a 2.5 on the "hard to do scale" out of 10 only because pulling the trim was a little unnerving...
1. Park the car in an area of good light....
2. Pop the trim bezel that surrounds the NAV screen and center a/c vents.... This took a little more effort than I thought it would and managed to do it using a couple of guitar picks  ...... I grabbed about 6 and wedged them all around the trim in between the dash and itself.. I did about 4 on the top side and 2 on the bottom corners... I then pushed down on the picks causing the trim to begin to pop out... I continued around the trim with ease till it came loose... The trim is removed with the vents as well and should be pulled directly towards the back of the car...
3. I removed two black phillips head screws that secure the nav into place.. these can be easily found to the right and left of the unit and can also be identified by the black plastic "nubs" that poke through... you can check them out on a picture later in the thread.
4. Gentle pull on the Nav unit from the back on both the right and left side.. it has to plastic pins that hold it into the rear of the dash.. THEY WILL NOT BREAK WHEN YOU PULL ON IT.. so dont worry too much...
5. After the pins become loose be careful not to pull too hard as there is some wiring that needs to be disconnected.... Do this by facing the NAV screen to the ceiling and removing the 2 wiring harnesses and the other big wire.. all three items have releases on them and they will not just pull right out...
6. Now that the screen is free to inspect.. turn it around and find the YELLOW video input.. similar to that of a TV,VCR,or DVD player...
http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19523&thumb=0&d=1149818735
7. I ran a video wire from the screen cubby straight down and snaked it out the side of the stereo on the passanger side floor... this is after I tested that the video would play from my portable DVD player onto my screen... which it does flawlessly after pushing the INFO button on the NAV controlls 2 times and having the e-brake up...
8. I then ran the wire along the floor and pushed it under the center console so it cant be seen poking out unless your looking between the passanger seat and the center console..
9. While I had everything apart I decided it would be best to make it perminant and grounded out the e-brake switch so that video can be shown to "passengers" while the car is in motion... this is done by cutting the greyish blueish wire on the larger wire harness and grounding it to the car from the harness... I grounded mine to a good screw inside the cubby of the NAV..
http://legacygt.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=19526&d=1149818735
10. Last but not least I ran the audio wire which is conventiently placed in the center console along with a power supply under the passanger side seat and hooked all my wires up... to my DVD player...
11. Put everything back together... turned car on... turned DVD player on (which I leave on always).. popped in my fav DVD.. tucked everything under the pass. seat.. hit the INFO button twice... turned stereo onto AUX... and enjoyed the show...
As of right now I need to figure out the best way to leave the player under the seat but still be in range of the remote so that I can FF Stop RW or change scenes and such from the drivers seat... as of right now it is wedged in between the floor and the seat and stays fine unless someone moves the seat back or forward which causes it to full all the way under the seat....
Here are picks of the finished product... whover decides to go ahead and do this little project should post more pics of the cubby hole and such

Well this was my first "HOW-TO" and I hope it helps...

Does grounding the grey wire disable any of the navigation's other features? Or is it only for the video input?
And this is probably a simple question but I need to make sure, since this was all done on a 07 spec b, this should be able to be done the same way with an 06 navi and the jazzy aux-in mod to the radio right?

wait, im still confused, so when you say 'ground the wire on the harness = long wire, not the short wire thats coming from the plug, correct?
if i do that, then how does the nav unit know the e brake is up if no signal is going to it because of the cut wire.
or are you called 'wire on the harness' as the short wire coming from the plug?
and how did you ground the wire, did you just strip it and wrap it around a screw in the cubby and secure it down, because thats what i did, and in addition to the video IN not working, but the car thinks the ebrake is constantly UP even when im driving.

Ground the wire attached to the harness plug side... that way the screen thinks your e brake is constantly on.
Take a look at this Picture(there is a wire cut in half one side is stripped, thats the side you ground to the vehicle.)

so if the cd/mp3 player was a DVD/DVD-A player then we wouldnt need to do all this and would get mp3's on DVD (more capacity) and the ability to watch DVD's out of the factory .
Thx subaru for giving us partial feature and functionality only...considering those that hv the navi paid extra for it. And u've had over a year to make the addition.
one would think they'd think things through.
Nice mod thos but we shouldnt have to do it...it should come from the factory that way.

One word : Liability
Subaru can't add a DVD from the facotry, consider what would happen to them if someone was watching a movie and found themself in a motor vechile accident, now who would be Liable.
I heard a story a long time ago, when cruise control first came out this gentleman bought it for his mobile home, he thought it was an amazing feature, off he went driving and drove on to the highway put on cruise control and decided he wanted something from the fridge, so off he went, and much to his surprise the mobile home didnt in fact drive itself, and he crashed and badly injured himself. he sued the dealership for not explaining fully what the system was.
so thats the reason I see them not putting a DVD player in so you can watch TV while you drive, and the fact that you have to disable one of the safety features to be able to watch a movie while you drive does say a lot. I suppose they could put it in but then again who would want to sit in a parked car and watch a movie.

+1.. it's weird how many aftermarked headunits let you play DVD's... there is also a big focus on DVD players in the carputer community too...
I have a couple of friends who asked me if my carputer could play DVD's, and my response: "I don't need a 7" movie screen in my dash when I have a giant one with live action going on just above my dash (windshield)"

Have you ever owned or installed an aftermarket DVD HU? I have and what you dont realize is that the instructions for all these units say to ground a wire to the ebrake, thus only allowing DVD playback when the car is parked and ebrake is up. Its a cover your butt liability move, however what they dont put in the official documentation but is well known by installer is to simply take that ebrake wire and ground it, allowing you to play DVDs anytime, however since they dont instruct how to do this, they cant be held responsible if the owner installed it 'improperly and illegally' and are free from legal action.
I suspect the backdoors glitch in the nav screen is a similar kind of loophole.

Another question. How does it look when the dimmer kicks in at night? I know the map and other things are black instead of white and it's very dark. Does it dim the video a lot?
Also, in theory, all we would need now is a boost gauge that outputs to video right? And we'd be able to have boost on the lcd!!??

It dims the video as well in night mode, you have to dial the brightness back up with that knob on the left of the steering wheel back to daytime interior illumination to get the video to full brightness.

Hey your not actually grounding the Ebrake wire on the car side, since your going to be cutting the wire in half you will only be ground the wire to the screen side, thus fooling the screen to thinking you will have the e brake engaged all the time.
and its just a regular RCA cable you should be able to find at any electrical store, bestbuy? source? etc,
hope this helps.

well the display only has a video in. In order to run sound, you need to tap it through the aux. I have two cables running to my console, one for my ipod and one for my dvd player. just swap them manually whenever you want to switch between ipod and dvd.
Oh and to anyone reading this, I have extra MOLEX connectors pre-wired for back-up camera for sale. They wouldn't let me buy just 1 so I have a bunch extra. PM me if interested. I am not selling them at a profit, just trying to get rid of them.

Thank you OP!
I was feeling adventurous so I wandered out and gave this a shot. Really pretty easy. I don't have any device to output composite video other than my digital camera so I plugged it in to ensure that everything was working properly. Also took a short video
DigiCam A/V out to LGT nav system
I didn't want to run a wire around back there so I grabbed a DMM and found a purple wire that is GND. I jumpered from the 'blueish grey' to the purple wire to keep the parking brake sensor happy. Be very careful and check with a DMM first before you do this because there are 2 purple wires in the harness but ONLY 1 is GND!

Actually now that I think of it... purple is a very strange color for ground. Does anyone have a pinout of that harness? I'm a little worried purple is for some other sensor and may not be a good idea.
Thanks

Probably void your warranty for only the nav system.

so ive now read through this entire thread and couldn't discern a 100% yes or no from my 2AM reading of the 6 pages. Does a US 2006 Spec.b (mine happens to be 403 but thats not important) have the single yellow video input on the back of the navigation screen.
I am going to be doing the HighlineCA stock radio modification when they start it up and will just have them add an RCA in on the back so I can have stereo sound into the system so i dont care about the audio. I just want to know before i start making moves towards getting the DVD player and such that there is a video in on the 06 spec B navigation units?
can Somebody else with an 06 spec B confirm one way or another for me?

CTATV take out the nav, it takes 5 min and you can check for yourself. All you need is a phillips screwdriver and an old cd.

Checked, so now all with 06 spec.B have confirmation, the nav unit in our cars DOES have the video in plug on the back. Cant wait to add a DVD player and backup camera to my ride...
anybody know a good basic 12v DVD player that might fit somewhere nice like under the seat or in the glove box?

starting the Ebay search for a color/Infared backup camera & a DVD player...
Thinking if i can get one that fits ill put the DVD player in the Manual partition of the glovebox, or under the seat. They make little remote sensor things that go over the sensor on the DVD player itself and then you run a wire and put a different sensor wherever you want. Thinking put the remote sensor behind one of the heat vents, totally invisible but remote works
then get a 4 channel a/v switch that fits in the arm rest. Can switch from DVD player, to backup camera, and have two more slots for whatever I havent thought of yet, maybe another camera mounted in the front grill/bumper etc & a hook up for the thin version of PS2 or something..... very very excited.
I don't care about the camera turning on automatically when putting car into reverse. I'll just leave the video splitter on the reverse camera mode & when I actually need the camera i can just hit the info button twice...

I just realized that the Zune outputs video. lol. I will be running a composite cable from the nav to the center console tomorrow or this coming weekend. Does anyone have any recommendations / pictures of the center trim being removed? If not I will be sure to snap a few and post them up.

yeah I wanted to be sure that i was part of the "in" crowd before I went through researching DVD players and backup cameras... Want to do the backup camera sometime soon... got a few picked out on ebay so far. color in daytime and infared in the night... should be pretty cool im going to have it set up so i can turn it on whenever I want. Might be very nice asset to have in heavy traffic when switching lanes etc etc...

Strange. As soon as I turn on the headlights video input stops and map pops up. If I try to cycle to video input it just skips it... info, map, info, map back and forth. :(

What is the purple wire for?
My video input seems to work at night just gets darker but I am basing this on my rear view camera working at night and when I push the info button it going black. I have no input in the back but it goes to black when I push it twice.
I really want to make my rear view camera to work when I put it in reverse and when I push the info button twice.
Do you think having the camera powered up at all times when the car runs would be bad for it?

You must have the camera attached to power when you start the car in order for it to be detected by the screen IIRC. Therefore I imagine you will need to have the camera powered at all times when the car is on.

Purple wire tells the navigation when the headlights are on and, in turn, when to "dim" for night driving. That is why my video output stops when I turn my lights on... because that wire goes from 0V to 5V... err.. 12V. I have yet to confirm this but that is really the only explanation...
On a side note, I got a zune 80 this weekend and everything is working great (minus the headlight issue). I am a bit dissapointed that the zune can only play mp4 and wmv video files (no avi or mpeg). I'll post a video later.

So when I have my hidden screen up and pull my e brake up it just says that its off. It tells me when I'm in reverse or turn the lights on. Is my e brake not hooked up to my navi factory?

I have followed the cutting and grounding of wires to get dvd and video input but there is a company that sells a device you hook up to the factory nav box that gives several video inputs and a tv tuner. It is listed in the original nav hack thread Ill look around and try to edit this post with it but I thought I would mention it since many seem to want dvd without all the work. I am not sure how this handles sound. It cost over $500 which is what kept me out of it but now that I have modded the car and spent much more than that I think about how the tv tuner would be cool especially when HDTV is broadcast. Anyway I thought it was worth mentioning

Where are you guys grounding the wire that gets cut from behind the navigation unit? Are you adding length to the wire to ground it lower in the console? I cant see anywhere that looks like it will make a good ground close to the wire coming from connector that we cut and ground. Please let me know ASAP as my dash is apart.
TIA,
Anthony

So do you have to choose between a back-up camera and video input for dvd/whatever?

Yes unless you find an input switch.

I the back up uses the molex connector and the video input uses a female RCA input. You can not watch both at the same time but you can have both connected at once. I have my car set up that way.
I do wish I would have wired a on switch for my back up camera besides the reverse trigger. I know there are many times, I would like to look behind me besides when backing up.
Anyone know if anytime the camera powers up it will come on the screen or if reverse some how switches the input source whether the camera powers up or not? I believe the latter is true. If anyone knows for sure please post.
TIA,
Anthony

If anyone knows for sure please post.If the rear camera is connected correctly then the NAV will switch the display to it when it detects the transmission is in reverse.

I'm shopping around for a backup camera as well. I did manage to get a couple of the molex connectors for this project though. I requested a sample of the part# (0039013042) and they sent me 2.
As for the camera, I really can't decide which to get. Would be nice to see some of them in person.
