I did a search and couldn't find anything on it, but does anyone know if it is feasible to install an in-dash NAV system in the cubby hole above the little info center? Obviously the door flap would have to come off, but it looks like nearly the right size to fit one in there. The reason I ask is because I would like to have a NAV system, but the Garmin's and Tom-Tom's all havve dinky little screens and for dang near the same price I could get a Pioneer or Eclipse with a 7" touch-screen that could just retract back into the dash every time you turn the car off. If anyone has done this could I see some pics or if I am smoking crack at the very idea I would like to know this too.

I hate the search snobs on this board. They create an elitest community I hesitate to associate myself with. Rather than help a fellow member find an answer they will waste key strokes to state "you did not search." Assholes. The search feature on this site is lousy anyway.
The answer is yes this can and has been done. I have an AVIC N2 in that cubby. It requires you order a JDM part from AVO turbo world that will convert your cubby into a single DIN. They only strange thing is that you will have 2 CD players (the installation renders the stock unit useless.) If you PM me, I'll take some pics to show you. There ARE some threads on this forum that do have pics already if you have the time to use the crappy search feature. Search for Pioneer AVIC.

its morning time and i barely had breakfast, and every new post (or at least the few i looked at) were low post count new users asking the same rehashed questions over again where one or two words in the search (which works fine for me btw) would have solved all.... not meaning to be an ass, please excuse me i just woke up

I didn't actually do a search for particular models of nav units, I just thought a more generalized search would yield better results....Apparently not. And I'm not THAT much of a noobie, I'm just not a fanatic and I only do minor mods on my baby, so I don't have too many questions that often. Sorry to be such a god damn bother.

I felt the same uncharitable thoughts when I first read it. Then I did a search for "cubby nav" and saw what a mess it would have been to sift through all of them. Sorry.
OTOH, a search for "cubby nav pioneer" turns up this:

It's the fourth link, easy to spot.

You're just as big an ass for striking back in the same tone. Eh, my thoughts on the matter anyway.
Fat Charlie- A search on the matter (technical abilities to use this site's search function aside) would also yield double din soultions, independent screen soultions, carputer solutions... its all there. Anyway, here's what I pulled off:

huh, impresssive, I didnt do a search (I'm browsing new posts) you gotta link to info on that pic? In searches for nav you MAY have had turnups of some of my posts (no.. not turnips.. turn-ups.. results) on the carputer factory fit navi thing, where it is possible to fit some screens in the dash, your best bet is going to be to do something like was done in the previous post, as for details on what bezel that is.. I'm waiting to see :P
I know of 2 main ways to do it.. 1 would be to hack up your stock bezel and fiberglass it for a screen, this works but never matches the car unless yer REALLY good. the other way would be to buy a factory nav. screen bezel, and put your own screen in it, problem is the factory screen is a weird size (like 7x3.75) and your 7x4 screen will have the bottom cut off. This is a minor problem UNLESS you have controls on the screen. Basically the more you try to do the more you have to do and the more research work and money has to go into it. IMO.. if you want navi.. its probablly easier to use your laptop, or to get a garmin if you didnt get it factory :(

First off, let me say that you were one of the first to get NAV into the Legacy and your install is still by far the best looking project period. While I prefer the location of my screen in the cubby, your end result in the factory location is a masterpiece!:icon_bigg
Anyway, here's the link to my original install thread:

I've since installed a fiberglass sub enclosure in the passenger side of the trunk. The stock bezel matches color perfectly and was done with a texture application and dye by my installer.

heh, wow, thanks. Unfortunatly the sad truth is I haven't had a working system in my car since april. My project to improve it with a kit has resulted in lots of time and money down the drain, I just typed my apologies to the people holding out on that accessory a few minutes ago. The future of my setup is very fuzzy right now :(
ah.. I see what you did, nice results! the color matching is very very good.
To the original post..
I suggest you take your cubby out and take a good look at how its assembled, you are right in your analysis that there is a lot of potential in there. My original thought was to have a fold out screen with a remote switch perhaps around the arm rest. when it was closed it woud look like it does now, but when its open the door would rest on top of the screen like a hat, kind of shading the screen from the light.
The idea didn't work because of many things.. the most important being the radio support has a shallow backing in the cubby area. AFAIK you have to cut this to put even a single din radio in the spot.
oh, if you're nervous about taking the cubby out.. you should be lol, I broke mine the 2nd time.. its held to the a/c vents with small plastic ears.. but the only way to get it out is to PUUUUULLLLLLLLL heh, supposedly you can use a special tool to collapse the supports, but.. I haven't seen such a thing.
well, I need to goto bed, hope some of that helps. I know its hard to search for this stuff cos the keywords are everywhere, but "nav, navi, screen, in-dash, carputer" should turn up some things.

Thanks for all the input everyone. That picture is EXACTLY what I had in my mind. Almost brings tears to my eyes..... Hopefully I can pull something like that off in the future. If I do, it will only be because of all you guys. I know a LOT about cars, but it is humbling reading some of your posts. Makes me realize how much I still have to learn.

SexyGT, searching on the internets is an art that few have mastered.
FWEASEL has a kick-ass installation of a Kenwood double din and there are plenty of stories on this particular forum.
