I never acquired a taste for beer, nor do I plan to. Haven't tried dark beer before though. But it's something I don't want to do, for my own good. :) I always like to be the designated driver when my friends drink anyways.

Beer was an aquired taste for me. I didn't like it much until I got to Germany. I don't drink frequently myself but it is nice occassionally, maybe once a week after a good workout (the alcohol effect is slightly enhanced). :D

Sprecher Black Bavarian is good beer though. If you ever find some Gosser Dark, get it. It's the shiznit.

Love dark and cloudy beers, like the german ones such as Tucher.
Love Guiness.

I should have added that as an option! Oh well, your vote is certainly valid since you don't like dark beer (or pale or amber etc.)
Also, I'm sure there are others (including myself) whose appreciation for alcoholic beverages encompasses more than beer.

If it can cause fire, I will drink it. But I tend to stay away from whiskey. I tend to prefer clear liquor such as Gin and Vodka. I also have a soft spot for Bacardi Limon. I love that.. mmm mmmm mmm.. I can drink those at any time.
Beer was an aquired taste for me.
Yeah, it was an acquired taste for me too. I acquired it, and then I liked it. Seriously though, very few people like beer the first time they have it. Generally most young people don't have a developed enough palate to appreciate the flavors that good beer brings to the table. I definitely prefer beer to wine. My girlfriend is just the opposite.

Keen observations. Probably adding to the problem of not liking beer upon first taste is that it's usually crap beer and not the good stuff.

There are plenty of domestics to enjoy. Here in NJ, theer are about 12 local breweries, my favorites being Cricket Hill & Ramstein. Anytime I go to a restaurant, I ask if they serve local beer. Larger companies such as Yuengling (in my keg now), Brooklyn Brewery (had my bachelor party there), Anchor Brewery, Sierra Nevada, and Sam Adams have put significant pressure on Mega breweries to make a better product. Imports?? Sure I drink them, but aside from Belgians, I do not actively search them out.

damn you Jesster!! I need a keg of Yuengling!! Once I get my evenings and nights free again, I will be joining the guys from work on Thursday nights for some classy beer drinking (i.e expanding the palette). A place in the next town over has $2 pint nights on Thurs, any beer on tap. I think they have close to 40 or so beers on tap. I'm waiting to try an IPA (i have no idea what is it! but i've heard alot of people i work with talk about them)
Oh yeah, not a dark beer, but a local brewery makes Carolina Blond, which is good, and another local brewery makes Olde Piedmont (maybe is Olde Hickory..or something like that) which is also good.

I really miss the stuff even thought I was living in London and it was brewed there and not in Ireland. I also miss a proper sized pint, they have REAL pints over there, 568ml, not the junior size 473ml we get here. It's about that and they also have people (this is my dream job) that go out to pubs and taste test them in Ireland. You can tell good pints by the foam on the glass as it is being drunk, the more foamon the empty the better.

I can debate that pretty well. Warm?? Not necessarily. Sometimes a good cold beer hits the spot, but most beer, if appropriately served in a pint glass, will warm up to a nice cool over the course of a glass & give you much more flavor. I am not a big fan of "warm British beer", but a cold beer is not my favorite.

Guiness is brewed in a lot of differnt countries, even New Zealand. Last time I looked at a can of Draught Guiness it said Product of Ireland. Not sure about the kegs in the pub though.
"Warm" english beer isn't actually warm in the true sense of the word, it's just not refrigerated, it's stored in the cellar of the pub and given the climate of the country it's therefore typically in the 40-50 degrees F range. It's also not carbonated and hand pulled from the cellar. This is how it's been done for literally hundreds of years, it's the real deal. If you prefer Bud/Miller/Coors then I don't recommend it, but if like beer with flavour and character then sample away.

If you are drinking beer for the sole purpose of getting drunk, then B/M/C wouldn't be a bad choice and is reasonably priced (read: it's not colt 45 or ole milwaukee). Drinking premium beers for the sole purpose of getting drunk would get you there quicker, but break the bank also. Just a side thought...

Most good porters are nice this time of year. Sierra Nevada comes to mind. I really do not care for Christmas beer. They usually have nutmeg or cinnamon in it, which I really do not like. A Doppelbock such as Ayinger may also be a good selection, but watch out for the alcohol. Same goes for Duvel, which I recommend.

Be careful of a barleywine style. They are different. Usually has low carbonation, and a deep caramel flavor. Almost a scotch or brandy association. I hate them. Other people love them.
Duvel is awesome, especially in a nice tulip shaped glass. Lets the head rest nicely & concentrates the aroma. Oh man......

Because there is so much more to beer than Corona/Budweiser/Coors/Miller. If you have tried a general cross section of beer, and still come back to "American Light Lager" style beer, then you are a rare breed and God Bless. Enjoy. Most people drink mass market out of convenience, not by choice.

Not a big fan of dark beers made with black patent malt, too much of that burnt flavor. I prefer drinking beer in the summer. Nothing as good as finishing the lawn and cracking a cold one. One of my favorates are Belgium style White (Wit) beers. These are lightly hopped wheat ales fermented with a specific yeast and infused with a touch of corriander at about 5% alcohol. The Belgium made Hoegaarden is probably the bench mark. There are a few domestic versions of this style that hit the mark as well. For those around Austin TX, Celis White is an excellant rendition. Double White out of South Hampton NY is also quite good. However, it's alcohol content, at 7%, is a little high for the style. Those around Quebec, check out Blanche De Chambly.
Probably my all-time favorate sipping beer is a Belgium Gueuze. Again, this is a lightly hopped wheat beer with a secondary fermentation from bacteria indiginous to Brussels. The bacteria contributes lactic acid providing a tart flavor. Cantillon is a good example of this style. Caution, this style is not for everyone.
I'm Irish and from Illinois, so I'm pretty much required by Irish Catholic Mandate to love Guinness... which I certainly do! :D It p1sses me off to a great extent when I go to a bar and they don't even pour it right
They really need to start sending these insanely difficult instructions to any bar that serves Guinness...

I agree. I want to jump over the bar & do it myself sometimes. You really know a great bartender when they put the clover leaf in the head.

If you are ever in NYC, go to Maggie's Place. Rated best Guinness in New York.

I have heard about that one. Good reputation.
The Deschutes Brewing Company is in Bend. I like to support our local economy, especially when it comes to drinking beer.:)
Cascade Lakes Brewery is local too, not sure what their darkie is called though.
No shortage of good coffee or beer here in the Pac NW.

I've had to teach a few barkeeps before
A good buddy of mine can make all sorts of designs in the fluff, I like buying guys drinks and having him make the ole'cock & balls shape for them
Yup I know about Maggie's, by brother lives in Manhattan and we always go down there whenever I'm in the city ;)

I have consumed a lot of Full Sail over the years, they are near you correct? The Amber used to be my favorite but I think they changed the brew a couple of years ago.

Hey all.
Now that Summer is almost here, what is your warm weather beer of choice??
For me? I like a nice white ale, or real cheap stuff, like Rolling Rock.

St. Arnold (local Houston microbrew) has Kristall Weizen (wheat beer, basically a heifeweizen) that I enjoy on summer afternoons...
Paulner makes a good Heifeweizen too..
Any Canadians care to chime in here? Heck- they serve beer in church up here!

Yeah, but I like St. Arnolds stuff better (and it's closer, I live a little ways from the brewery and have went to a tour  ). I think Shiner has gone a bit downhill since they started distributing nationwide...
If you can find it, Quilmes Cristal is great for the summer. Like Bud, but no nasty aftertaste. :D Goes down like water.

I just tried Clipper City's Peg Leg Imperial Stout.
Amazing range for such an unknown brewery. St. George's Porter still remains my favorite dark beer (outside of Guinness/Guinness Extra Stout of course)... but Peg Leg is stronger than most others I've tried - so it makes for a more fun time :) .

I've fallen in love with microbreweries... There's a lot of stuff (especially coming out of Pennsylvania for some reason) that gives German beer a run for its money.

I got an authentic Guiness Rugby jersey yesterday. Its pretty sweet. However $45 for a case of Guiness isn't in the cards too often.

Heh... A case is about $32 here for the Extra Stout. You can get a 12-pack of regular Guinness usually for about $15.
Guinness by the way, is a very light beer despite it's color (also less ABV than Budweiser).

Guniess Extra stout is the darkest beer I could find at the Class 6 (place that sells alcohol on Military Base) here are Fort Bragg.
It is not great but it is drinkable.

You can request just about anything and they can order it if they like you.
I had a Chinese Beer from a Ft. Meyer Class Six called Dragon Stout that was nearly 10% ABV. It was nasty, but I drank every last drop.
