View Full Version : More site problems.
Downtime, sorry but it happens. I'm currently out of town for a week and wouldn't you know it, 10 hours after I leave the server goes down. Well it took me a day to get my roommate to go check it out, looked like a bad power supply. Replaced it and turned the box back on. 2 hours later it goes down again. Ok, looks like CPU fan then is bad. He replaced that today and that's where we currently are. The fan did look bad and was running slowly, so here's to hoping it wont go down again. Or at least it will wait until I'm back on Sunday.
Sorry gang.
Cheers and on dialup -- Tide
ps. thank elrod@shallowpool.com for helping me out in a tight spot. he's a great roommate. :)

I can host a temp site if you ever need it. I run the servers, three T1s for bandwidth. You can temporarily re-point the DNS A-record, give it a TTL of 1 hour, and give people a "Site returning soon" page explaining the difficulties. I can host as much content as you need for as long as you need, and provide you with FTP access to upload files.
I can also do secondary DNS if you need it; it's always good to have some DNS on a completely different network.
(I tried emailing the person on the domain registration but it bounced.)
If you can tell, this is what I do all day :D Email me or PM if I can do anything to help.
Basically the first diagnosis that it was a bad power supply was incorrect. So far the second diagnosis of a bad CPU fan seems to be holding up ok. It's my own machine (a 2u server, colocated at a hosting company). The nice thing is I can add memory, cpus, hard disks, software at will. Bad thing is it's my butt when it fails.

Tide broke teh Intraweb!!!
I could host a mirror site if you want too. We could get some rsync action going, or whatever you'd like... I also have 2 DNS servers on separate networks, and could give you webmin access to setup anything you need. (I have another server on a DS3 being rebuilt as well...)

Yes we noticed. Don't let it happen again. :p
Actually thought you took the millions you have made off this site and were driving around the Itallian Alps in your new GT or maybe you just got tired of us.
Thanks for continued effort.

Get an Antec power supply next time. :p eh... how about this: http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/chassis/sr2300/
with this motherboard http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/se7501wv2/index.htm
Dual power supply, dual cpu, ECC ram, triple PCI bus (PCI-X 100), hardware raid 1/optional zero channel raid controller, integrated watchdog timer (and all the other server goodness). Should only go down very rarely, as it can fail CPU's, banks of ECC ram, etc, without going down, or only minutes of downtime. Also has redundant cooling :)

Tide, thanks for keeping everyone in the loop. Nothing worse when a site goes down and you have no idea why. Thanks again
Adam.
