View Full Version : OMG - big bass improvement!

Can't believe I never thought of this sooner.

I always wondered why I got better midbass from the rear doors than the front. Suddenly dawned on me that there are two big holes in the door panel - the tweeter openings.

Cut two disks of foam from some insulation & stuffed them in there & there's a dramatic improvement in midbass! I'm finally feeling the kick of drums that were too high for the sub.

Always miss the obvious stuff...

I just left my stock tweeters in place. ;)

I guess one of us is smarter than the other. Eh, doesn't bother me, I'm much better looking...:icon_bigg

Quick question... does the stock speaker/tweeter arrangement use some kind of crossover or high-pass and low-pass filter?

If I was to replace the front door speaker with a good quality full range speaker and disconnect (but keep installed) the tweeters, should that take care of it? Or do I need to remove some crossover or filters? Thanks.

Nope, just unplug 'em.

I haven't had my door panels apart yet, but there's got to be a high-pass filter for the tweeter somewhere. Probably just a single capacitor, possibly soldered in right between the tweeter and the wiring - in which case you could just unplug 'em, as boulderguy said. :)

interesting. i've been running without my amp and sub in the trunk for a good 3 mos or so. i have to admit the stock stereo isn't too bad compared to the hubby's 6 speaker "premium" stereo in his car. i don't have holes in the tweaters, so i guess i'm not sure what you are talking about. however, i think tomorrow i may just re-install my sub now that this thread reminds me. :)

does the stock speaker/tweeter arrangement use some kind of crossover or high-pass and low-pass filter?Yes- each tweeter has a capacitor on the back that serves as a high-pass filter. There's no other crossover circuitry anywhere else.
If I was to replace the front door speaker with a good quality full range speaker and disconnect (but keep installed) the tweeters [to keep the holes plugged up], should that take care of it?Yes, that would work fine.
