No, but I was running 245/40/17 on 17x8 and the grip is nice.

I ran 235/40/17 on 8" as well as 245/40/17 on 8".. both are r-compounds.. it's fine.

That's what I'd like to run; however, I'm not willing to go up in unsprung weight so you need some serious light wheels. With "average" weight 17x8 wheels you are looking at a couple pounds more than stock plus the tires are likely to be heavier than stock. Adding 5pds per corner is not a good thing for any aspect of performance.

I don't run a super lightweight setup but the performance is good. Yeah, reducing that weight improves performance, but by how much? I got a set of Rota wheels for $650 and 245 summer tires for $450. I used the rest of the money to upgrade the brakes ($300) and suspension ($900). I think people spend too much $ and thought to reduce the unsprung weight. It's up to you, though. Would you notice 5 lbs. per corner difference, really? On a track, would it amount to much of anything per lap for a street car?

you need to find lighter wheels and tires ;) and possibly couple with a set of the RacingBrake HP rotors for street use to knock off another 5 lbs for the front unsprung weight.

SSR comps in 17x8 and 17x8.5 come out to be 13.5 lbs or so.. mate that up with a couple of lighter tires in your own seasonal flavors of street, all-season or full out race-compounds... I did some comparisons that there are some tire weights that can vary in teh same size as much as 5 lbs for a 245/40/17 due to construction of the belts and sidewall.. so really, you can really knock off a lot of weight compared to the stock wheel/tire combo as much as 10 lbs to 12 lbs.
