View Full Version : Trying on some new shoes (SSR GT2's)

I've always liked these wheels. I picked up a set recently from a local customer.

I was not sure about putting them on, because our Legacy wagon has been pretty well known for having the Rota Formula Mesh on it, and I think the Rotas look great. But I thought I'd give it a shot. It was dark, so I could only take pics inside the shop, and there wasn't much room to stand back. I'll post some more pics in the next day or two.

The 18x8 Rotas with Potenza S-03's (225/40R18) weigh 47.9 pounds per corner. The 18x8.5 SSR's with Kumho Ecsta MX (same size)
weigh...37.9 pounds/corner! Wow, ten pounds of weight lost per corner! (Some of that may be tire, since I didn't weight the tires in isolation.)

I still have the Rotas. I'm considering which I like better. Thoughts?

I am really biased toward the Formel Mesh, they look as awesome as the BBS's, but Rotas are heavy. They really go well with the look of your car. The SSR's are nice, lighter is better of course, but don't have the style factor of the Rotas. They don't grab the eye like the Formels do. Have you ever considered something like a Enkei RPM2 in Hyper Black? Wonder if those would be lighter than the Formels and have a nice mesh look.

Tough choice you have.

I am really biased toward the Formel Mesh...

Thanks for the comments. I don't mean to harp on this, but this is a common mis-identification.

My previous wheels are the FORMULA Mesh:

This is a Rota FORMEL:

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y249/danhurwitz/Wheels/RotaFormel.jpg

The Formel does look a lot like the Enkei, and I've never been that fond of that style. Too flat-looking, spokes too spindly.

Of course, I could go with the Rota looks AND light weight by getting...the real deal, the BBS RE's. For $650 each...

GT2s are def one of the nicer wheels for LGT. Nice!

Looks good, Dan. :)

According to this thread, the GT2s are about 4lbs. lighter than the Formula Mesh;

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=448097

The S03s were one of the heaviest tires out there, so I could see the difference of ~6lbs. between them and the MXs.

The GT2s will be easier to clean. :D

where the hell are you people getting the GT2's? I know Tirerack sells them but I thought they didn't offer the exact offset for our cars?

I believe you have to select the 2004 WRX STi as your vehicle, and then you should be able to see the GT2s in the 18x8.5" size.

edit: Didn't see the GT2s on the Tire Rack site anymore, so maybe they stopped carrying them. Dan said he got his from a local customer.

The new rims look great Dan! Although I did really enjoy the Formula Mesh on your wagon. That Rota Formel is AWESOME! I love it! What are the weights/pricing on those?

Wanna sell me your Mesh's for real cheap!?!?!? ;)

I vote for GT2 because:

1. Lighter
2. Stronger (???)
3. 5 spoke is easier to clean than mesh
4. It is time for a change

GT2 are one of the cleanest, strongest, and ARE better than the Rotas :D(pretty light too)...I like Rota's but if you wanna compare...then there is no comparison:D

Im an SSR freak...

SSR-Tanabe already released there MS-1 wheel (the mesh wheel from SSR) which is one strong wheel and comes in MANY sizes.. now it's just a matter of Tirerack getting them since Tirerack is supposedly the sole distributor of SSR wheels.

I say keep the SSR's, but then I am a little biased ;)

Mach V the overlays, they only cover the amber part of the lens, right? And not the whole lamp assembly? What color does your signals blink now, amber or red?

I don't like the look of the SSRs...I say stick with the Rotas. But if performance is your goal...then looks be damned.

Any comments on how the reduced weight feels when driving?

Acceleration vs deceleration?

Bump control?

this is just FYI i weighted my Rota Tarmac II's Hyperblack 18x7.5 with Goodyear F1 gs-d3 225-40x18, 44#. btw they both look good it's all a matter of taste. bosco

ps my car seemed to ride better with the 18's vs the stock 17's

www.oakos.com has all Rota wheel weights
