It's finally here! We've been saying we need one of these for a while, so I present you the Official LegacyGT.com Thread of Beer Snobbery: 2007 Edition (Like our drinking, we're getting an early start!)
Rule 1: Macro-brews are crap
- Article B: Any "beer" with the word "lite" or "light" is not beer. No exceptions (Credit to johnAWD for the clarification)
- Article C: If the "beer" is advertised with the words "Ice" or "Ice Cold", it's not beer
Rule 2: "Because it's local" (or regional) doesn't make it good
Rule 3: Hops Rule!
Rule 4: If when out with friends, you typically order a Budweiser, you belong in a different thread
Rule 5: "Because it's imported" doesn't make it good
Rule 6: The right beer will go with any meal
Rule 7: Respect thy brother in beer-snobbery. You may disagree, but you may not disrespect.
Rule 8: No trolling ;)
Now ... Discuss!

Any "beer" with the word "lite" or "light" is not really beer. It's water with some coloring added in.
I'm a fan of Sam Adams lager from time to time. Been a fan of Fat Tire, but after spending a bunch of time in the UK, I just can't drink much of our domestic beer anymore. Even the "imports" are passe....

Shed Brewery out of Stowe, VT, favorite beerk -> "Shed Mountain Ale"
I enjoy most Sam Adams beers and although they aren't really a micro-brew any more I think they are deserving of a spot on this thread. I keep a loaded quarter-barrel of whatever seasonal is available in my Kegerator at all times!

Red Tail Ale from Mendocino is good.
The local brewery Sudwerk is pretty good from the tap. Bottled stuff sucks big time. It's about $5 for a litre. Plus in the winter, most people will smuggle the litre glass home.
I knew a Brewmaster for Budweiser. He said the American Pilsner is one of the hardest beers to brew since they have to be so consistant from brewery to brewery. IMO, it's still piss water.

As for taste, if you chill any beer cold enough it's palatable, it freezes the taste buds, only great tasting beer can be drunk at room temperature (not warm).

Birmingham, Alabama, now there's a place with beer in it's history
Serving temperature
[/URL]
The [U]temperature (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Manet%2C_Edouard_-_La_Serveuse_de_Bocks_%28The_Waitress%29%2C_1879.j pg) of a beer has an influence on a drinker's experience. Colder temperatures allow fully attenuated beers such as pale lagers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pale_lagers) to be enjoyed for their crispness; while warmer temperatures allow the more rounded flavours of an ale or a stout (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stout) to be perceived. Beer writer Michael Jackson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jackson_%28beer_expert%29) proposes a five-level scale for serving temperatures: well chilled (7 °C/45 °F) for "light" beers (American and Australian lagers), chilled (8 °C/47 °F) for Berliner Weisse, lightly chilled (9 °C/48 °F) for European lagers, all dark lagers, altbier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altbier) and German wheat beers, cellar temperature (13 °C/55 °F) for regular British ale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ale), stout (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stout) and most Belgian specialities and room temperature (15.5 °C/60 °F) for strong dark ales (especially trappist beer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trappist_beer)) and barley wine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barley_wine).

My thoughts on Fat Tire:
A good beer, but is not all it's hyped up to be. I'll drink it when I'm out visiting my sister in the Denver area, but with so many damn good beers in Colorado to choose from, it's a crime to pass on all the other beers available to drink Fat Tire exclusively. It's a solid and safe staple. A go-to when you don't recognize anything else available, but not an end-all be-all of beer.
There. I said it. That's my opinion and I'll stand by it. :)

Man, my first post and it is in a beer thread. Seems fitting!
Colorado has so many good micro breweries. Cali has some good stuff too...Stone=good!
My personal favorites:
1) Sunshine Wheat
2) Easy Street Wheat
3) Moose Drool
And for the holiday brews:
1) O'Fallons Pumpkin Ale
2) Avery's Jubilation
3) Blue Moon Winter Ale
Drinking Sam Adams right now... Its a good sipping beer with flavor.
I normally stick to lagers or pale ales like Moosehead or Alex Keiths India Pale.
But you really can't beat Canadian or Blue for getting lit up quick.

i must admit i'm not much of a drinker but, when in Annapolis, MD. i stopped in at the ram's head tavern (micro brewery and restaurant) for some crab cakes.
i don't like beers that "bite you" as it goes down your throat so with the suggestion from the waitress i tried a "helles" or munich beer. it is made with less hops and more yeast for very little bitter taste.
it was sweet, smooth, and was the perfect match for my palate.

Keep it local! Goose Island Honkers and Pale Ale are good and supports the local economy.
Other than that:
- Bell's is some of the best around. Most brewers use Bell's Amber Ale as the yardstick to measure quality against. I was actually sitting at Bell's the day they announced the distribution change - my only consolation: 15% off their beer if you show your IL driver's license (not much comfort, let me assure you).
- Three Floyds: Alpha King is a good Pale Ale, but Dreadnaught is the BEST!
- Pizza Port (Solona Beach Brewing Company) out by San Diego (Carlsbad and Solona Beach) - great stuff! Large variety... If only I remember my last visit there - I woke up at 3:30 AM on the ground of a parking lot of some apartment building, with no idea how I got there... tsk tsk.
- Sam Adams - very consistent quality (wish they sold Ole Fezziweg standalone like they used to)
- Stone
- Blue Moon and Hoegarden (and Celis, once they start making it again!) are all good white ales
- Most belgiums: Duval, Orval, Chimay, DT, etc.
Now I'm all thirsty!

You fellows know your brew..I'm impressed.
I tend to favor Amber, Pale, and Lager's:
-Longboard Lager by Kona Brewing Co. (The best Lager I have ever had)
-Winter and Summer Solstices by Anderson Valley (Every beer they make is phenomenol)
Samuel Smith's Winter Ale (Fabulous)
Fat Tire and Skinny Dip by New Belgium (Their 2degree is good also)
Mirror Pond Pale Ale by Deutsh (Consistency is not always there)
Boddington's (the only beer I'll drink from a can)
Kilt Lifter Scotch Ale by Mt. Tam Brewing company (Drink with respect).

I actually have 2 bottles (one empty, one full) of Celis Reserve commissioned especially for the opening of the Paris Las Vegas hotel. It was tucked in the back of the hotel fridge. Major score.

Michigan Brewing Co. bought the rights from Miller. i think they're brewing it now, but I don't think it's distributed very much (at least not to the Chicagoland area) You can get it at their brewpub:

I've been drinking alot of Deshutes Brewery Jubel ale lately. It's so damn good. Sierra Nevada celebration is awesome too. Has anyone tried the Sierra Nevada Bigfoot ale? That shit is awesome @ 9.6% or so. 3 of those gets you pretty looped.
I <3 IPA's, barley wines & winter ales.
 THOSE two! Just bought a 6-pack of Celebration last night. Not too bad at $6.99 at Albertson's. I think someone else in Oregon mentioned this also, but the Sunshine Wheat is AWESOME! :D I get it on tap whenever I'm at Old Chicago down there. :p
For those that like the Belgiums, I've seen alot of Chimay and others listed. As I mentioned previously one of my favorites of all time is the Tripel Karmeleit. Anyone else tried this? It's about $7-$8 for a 22oz or 24oz bottle. :( Spendy but worth it at times!!!!!! :D

I'll be sampling the Breckenridge Brewing Christmas Ale this afternoon at work (co-worker brought in a Breck Sampler :) )
Anyone else in the Twin Cities tried any of the Surly Brews yet?
I was lucky enough to tour their brewery back in May. Kind of a fun deal since they're just getting on their feet. I still only find it at some places, but I'm a big fan of Furious, enjoy Bender, and though I don't usually get into the Belgian style, I like Cynic as well.

ZinFreak,
Keeping me honest! Embarrassed to say I could not remember Moylan's name. Which is really embarrassing when you consider that our kids are in the same school, and he blesses every school function with the best of whatever he is brewing.
As far as the waitresses go, my wife barred me from unaccompanied patronization of Moylan's or the Brew Co when the wedding vows were still fresh. I'll be sure to ask Mr. Moylan about his "recruiting" requirements.

It is cool to see that the local brews make it all over the country. I have not been able to drink the Flying Dog stuff since I had it at their brewery...the bottled stuff bust does not compare.
This weekend I had some beer from Cali, can't remember the brewery, it was called Brown Shugga. That was some good stuff! They also have something called Kronic, but I have not tried it yet. I also recently tried the Blue Moon Winter Ale, and it was great!

You can always tell if someone is NOT from California, because the refer to it as Cali. Same with 'frisco... No one calls it 'frisco that lives within 150 miles of it.
Brown Shugga' be from Lagunitas Brewing Co about 20 miles south of me in Petaluma California. They make a great IPA and Imperial Stout.

By the same token, you can tell that somebody is from Southern California when they start talking about "the 5," or "the 405." My girlfriend never noticed she did this until I pointed it out to her...especially funny is that she doesn't do it when she talks about freeways in Austin, where she lived for a few years. Silly lass.
Back in on-topic land, I had a Pyramid Snowcap yesterday, and it was tasty. I'm also thinking I'll have to try the Blue Moon Winter Ale, because Blue Moon is good stuff. I'm not a big fan of wheat beers, but Blue Moon never disappoints. Mmmmmm. Beeeeeeeer....

That is the name of the Brewery. I don't actually refer to it as Cali, but I am lazy and don't want to type it out. I usually type Co instead of Colorado when I am talking about it. Funny you should mention the Frisco thing though...every time someone says that I think that they are talking about the mountain town here, LOL.

My fridge is currently stocked with Oberon! :D
Usually I have a 6 pack of Oberon, a 6 pack of Two Hearted Ale or Third Coast Beer (both Bell's brews), a 6 pack of Avalanche Ale, and a 6 pack of something else or assorted beers. Eventually I will need a separate beer fridge, because all that takes up a LOT of space!

F'ing Sam Adams White Ale... Got to spend a night in the emergency room because of this beer. It turns out this beer is flavored with all kinds of sh*t like anise, hibiscus flowers, rose hips, and other pansy candy-a$$ stuff.
http://www.samueladams.com/world_of_beer.aspx
My wife bought it and she forced me to take one sip. Ewww! An hour later it feels like Darth Vader is crushing my throat.
Well, the ZinFreak is highly allergic to rose hips. My throat was swollen to the point of being like a f'ing soda straw. Bunch of hits of epi, predisone, benadryl, and ratatidine and 6 hours later I can finally swallow again.
I'm now really leery of drinking these beers that have been flavored up for women.
Hops, barley, yeast, and water. Don't eff-up my beer with flowers and sh*t eh? :spin:

I've tried so many different brews I can no longer keep track of which one's I've had. In Denver, there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of different beers that can be had with less than half an hour's notice.
Ever since I started brewing my own beer, I've been more concerned about the type of the beer, over the Company that brewed it. (eg, there isn't a single pilsner or hefe weizen out there I can finish a pint of). Then I consider the situation. Season, time of day, and presence of food can all affect how a brew will taste.
There seems to be a trend of Small Brewery/Restaurants jumping up all over the place. Whenever I find myself at one of these places, I'm at the mercy of their local brewmaster. Hopefully, someone is there to describe the different brews with more than one or two words.

This is the thread I have been waiting for since I tasted my first sip of good old dad's beer sitting on the counter.
My current (and long standing ) favorites in no particualr order are:
Heineken (Specially the Keg Cans)
Becks
Fosters (That sour Bastard! Damn those cans are good!)
** New Castle (currently my favorite due to it's attribute to give me a 'stoned' kind of beer buzz)
Sierra Nevada
Zywiec is good (dated a Polish girl and her two friends a couple years back.. good to be young and foolish, eh?)
Now I am guilty of breaking one of these laws! When I go out with my co-workers, they always order Bud Light. I started this pitcher tradoff deal so that I don't spend so much money. I buy, then you, then him, then her...etc. Unfortunately, this backfired on me causing everyone to want (you guessed it) Bud light only. My own fault I suppose. :)
Well boys and girls, it's 2 AM and I have to work at 10. I raise my final Fosters to yah, Have a great night! :)

Tis true Gumby,
It is ridicuolous at how many outstanding breweries there are between San Francisco and the Oregon border.
BTW, if any of you happen to visit the Marin Brew Co in Larkspur, be sure to sample their Cask Ale on pull-tap. The type usually varies by the brewer's mood, but it is always phenomenal. Plus, it will never get warmer or flater....
I've been sampling a lot of Winter Ale of late, as have all of you I'm sure, and I'm still of the opinion that Anderson Valley Winter Solstice is still the best. Opinions?

Jimmy Buffett Teaming Up With A-B
http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/4064/3389/320/317654/landsharklager.jpg (http://photos1.blogger.com/x/blogger/4064/3389/1600/466232/landsharklager.jpg)
He is connected to two restaurant chains -- the Margaritaville Cafe and Cheeseburger in Paradise, owns shares in the minor league Fort Myers Miracle and Madison Black Wolf baseball clubs, appeared on Saturday Night Live, performed the first concert in Chicago's Wrigley Field and sang on the south lawn of the White House for a birthday bash for former President Bill Clinton. Now it looks like Jimmy Buffett is about to get his own beer.
Anheuser-Busch has received approval for a label from the U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau for a brew called Land Shark Lager from the Margaritaville Brewing Co. in Jacksonville, Fla. There has been talk of a deal between Buffett and A-B since the middle of this year. Land Shark Lager may be part of the next wave of flanker brands from the makers of Budweiser. The company has been working at a fever pitch for more than a year in rolling out new products aimed at various consumer niches. The approach to the massive Parrothead community, as Buffett's fans like to call themselves, could be overshadowed in 2007 if A-B follows through on another rumored move -- the acquisition of Sweden's state run Vin & Spirit, which makes Absolut vodka. The company announced cash flow and balance sheet moves this week that could be freeing up cash for a major acquisition.
Ironically, the A-B deal with Buffett has caused Crown Imports to drop its sponsorship under the Corona brand of Buffett's concerts in America. A-B holds a 50 percent share of Mexico's Grupo Modelo, which brews Corona. A-B recently signed a deal with Grupo Modelo to serve as the import agent for Corona in China.

I read up on this yesterday for a while in this article: http://www.chicagoreader.com/features/stories/bells/
It was an interesting read. More because of how you can see how antiquated laws have actually inhibited interstate trade in the industry. It's sad to see how the reasons they cite for the existance of the laws don't seem to be backed by the examples shown in California, and the mecca of US Beer Snobbery, Colorado where small brewers have flourished creating hundreds upon hundreds of quality (and often popular) craft beers.
It would be interesting to see how Utah's laws stack up. After talking with a Brewer in Utah a year ago, I ruled Utah out as a state I would ever consider living in. They have some backwards laws in that state when it comes to alcohol.

If there's a monk on the bottle, and it's from Belgium, and it's "made since" date is 1100-1400 you really can't go wrong imo :P
My favorite beer, and favorite of this style is Corsendonk Abbey Brown Ale. It is liquid heaven.

Firestone Double Barrel Ale is good. Firestone also makes nice wine. You may know them as the maker of crappy tires that make the Ford Exploder, I mean Explorer roll over in a blowout.
One of the members of the Firestone family started the winery and brewery in Buelton, CA (wine country behind Santa Barbara)
Now all you have to do is get tanked up on some Firestone beer or wine, go drive your Exploder with Firestone tires and you have a rolling lawsuit waiting to happen.

Too bad you did not like their wine, what kind did you have? I like the reserve Cab. But overall I like the beer from them better than the wine.
I was just up in your neck of the woods last Saturday. My wife and I were on a long road trip and we did a quick stop at some winerys in Sonoma. We hit Caneros Estate, St. Francis, Imagery and Benzinger. Then blasted home. We had a good time.

Beer and Snob are two word that don't go together. I don't think there is a bad beer. In college as long as it was not too warm, not too flat, and didn't have a cigarette butt in it I would have drank it. Are some beers better then others Yes, but the only bad beer is no beer at all.

And that is where you and I disagree.
I think that Budweiser, Miller, Busch, Michelob, etc. are all bad beers. They are so bad, in my opinion, that I really will avoid drinking them at almost any cost. I would pretty much only choose to drink them if a customer ordered it for me or possibly someone like a future father-in-law got it for me.
I even enjoy some of my beer at near room temperature. I sure don't like my beer to be too cold. It just kills the flavor.

Someone say Hoegaarden? :D Or Tripel Karmeliet? :p Or Blue Moon even though it's now carried by Coors.
And Rich, you want a good local beer to top Mac's? Try this when you come out:
Boundary Bay Scotch (http://bbaybrewery.com/beer.php)located in Bellingham, WA and sold in lots of places around here.
+1 on the Hoegaarden, it took first place out of about 60 different local, and import microbrews at a local brewfest. There was so many kids of tasty beer Like Sapora, Pyaramid, even Blue Moon, but Hoegaarden is just better and tastes more pure. I've been trying to locate a case of it ever since, but no luck. I heard Trader Joes gets in in occasionally, but they were out when I checked.
For those not in the know, Hoegaarden is a true Belgian White Ale that has a pear juice color to it. It's almost completely white, very little yellow in the coloration (unlike Blue Moon, which is very yellow in color). Nothing against BLue Moon, that's good beer too, but it almost has too much of a peppery-spice taste to it. While Hoegaarden has actually less flavor than Blue Moon, it just has this superbly pure and refreshing taste! If anyone knows where to get a case locally, let me know!

my main issue with Bud is the skunk aftertaste. maybe it's the temp then? There's a similar beer in Argentina called Quilmes Cristal (owned by the German company Warsteiner). It's like Bud, without the skunk aftertaste. I love it when I'm there but it's analogous to Bud in that the beer snobs there think it's piss.

I have always like the Harpoon IPA, one of the best India pale ales out there. The rest of the Harpoon line is good, but they tend to all taste the same.
My regular beer is either Sam Adams Boston Lager or Ale, and their Black Lager is really good too.
Berkshire Brewing (South Deerfield, MA) only bottles in 22s and half-gallon growlers. Their beer are ALL really good, but my fave is the Steel Rail Pale Ale. Brother lives there, so we went on a tour a few weeks ago and the samples were terrific.
One of my favorite breweries EVER is Smuttynose from Portsmouth, NH. Their Shoals Pale Ale is the best, and I just tried their Winter Ale and it was smooth, full, malty, hoppy, alcoholy, and just one of the best things I have ever had ever.

Sure, but you should post in the NorCal forum to see how many are interested. Rubicon is great, but it's in midtown, so it's likely that we will be spread out for parking. Hoppy Brewing Company, Sacramento Brewing Company, or BJ's Brewhouse in Natomas might be better choices because of the larger parking lots available there.

I love most anybody who has the balls to make a hefeweizen. Its by far my favorite type of beer ever. Magic Hat makes "circus Boy" and Harpoon makes UFO "Un-Filtered Offering" hefeweizen is an unfiltered beer some of the wheat settles at the bottom and you have to spin the bottle around to get it mixed in for the full bodied taste. hard to explain if you havent had it but its soo good.
Slightly off topic but my brother and I had a christmas party the night of the 25th and we had a keg of Newcastle. ohh that was soo good from the tap.
Wikipedia write up:
Hefeweizen
Hefeweizen is a German style of wheat beer in which the yeast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeast) is not filtered out. Though Kristallweizen (clear), Dunkelweizen (dark), and Weizenstarkbier or Weizenbock (higher alcohol content) varieties are available, they are not considered true hefeweizen unless left unfiltered. The filtration which takes the yeast out of Kristallweizen also strips the wheat proteins which make Hefeweizen cloudy.
Alternate terms for hefeweizen include: Hefeweißbier, sometimes Weißbier, Hefeweiße, Weizenstarkbier (not necessarily a hefeweizen unless left unfiltered)
The hefeweizen style is particularly noted for its low hop bitterness (about 15 IBUs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBUs)) and relatively high carbonation (approaching four atmospheres (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheres)), considered important to balance the beer's relatively malty sweetness.
Another balancing flavor note unique to hefeweizen beer is its phenolic character; its signature phenol is 4-vinyl guaiacol (http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/abstract/61003783/ABSTRACT), a metabolite of ferulic acid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferulic_acid), the result of fermentation by ale yeast appropriate for the style. Hefeweizen's phenolic character has been described as "clove" and "medicinal" ("Band-aid") but also smoky. Other more typical but less assertive ale flavor notes include "banana" (amyl acetate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amyl_acetate)) and sometimes "vanilla" (vanillin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanillin)).
Some prominent commercial examples of hefeweizen are produced by Paulaner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulaner), Erdinger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erdinger), Schneider Weisse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G._Schneider_%26_Sohn) (original amber only), Franziskaner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franziskaner), Rothaus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rothaus), Hacker-Pschorr (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacker-Pschorr), Ayinger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayinger) (Bräu Weisse) and Weihenstephan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weihenstephan). The style is a favorite throughout Germany, but is especially in Bavaria and across Southern Germany.

for all you who garnish your hefe with a lemon or orange: don't drop the fruit into the beer! Rub the lemon/orange around the rim of the glass then discard it (or just keep it on the rim of the glass). The citrus smell and tingle on your lips is a great compliment for this style beer imo.

We have a couple of good places down here in Phoenix
Four Peaks Brewing is probably my favorite, they keep an oatmeal stout on tap all the time and even do two desserts with it as well. The oatmeal chocolate shake and the Stoutamisu (tiramisu with the oatmeal stout).
I am usually an amber or darker beer drinker, although you can catch me drinking hefs as well.
I started my beer drinking road with Hard cider, and still love to drink them, one of these days I will try making some of my own.
I do have to admit that my wife and I honeymooned in Ireland. We got off the plane and got our rental car, 8 in the morning over there. Went and parked in Dublin. Wandered for a bit, got breakfast then headed to the Guinness Storehouse. Did the tour and ended up in the Gravity Bar (340 degrees glassed in bar that rises above the town) and had my first of many Guinness over there. On an interesting note, they do server 2 different types there, you can get the standard Guinness that is served a bit cooler than room temp, and then a specific Guinness extra cold that is supposed to be kept cold from the factory under certain guidelines. I could taste a difference so it was an interesting comparison.

Redhook Ale
As part of an equity investment in the Redhook Ale Brewery in Seattle, Anheuser-Busch wholesalers have distributed Redhook's superior microbrewery products since 1994 in select U.S. markets. Brands include Redhook Extra Special Bitter (ESB) Ale, Ballard Bitter Ale, Blackhook Porter and Wheathook Ale, among others.

So you wouldn't like it if Busch brewed it? WTF difference does it make... good beer is good beer.
I don't like Red Hook for what it's worth.
 Wow. Jeez. Calm down. Being sarcastic. What do you drink?

Good beer or not, I often try to avoid beers owned by the big macro-breweries. I Generally do not support their business practices and do as much as I can to support micro-breweries.
Macro-breweries and out-dated laws are a major reason that Bell's no longer sells beer in Chicago (well, all of Illinois) and that had previously been their Number 2 market. Larry Bell decided he couldn't legally sell his beer in the state of Illinois without compromising quality.
So, in general, I just support the little guys, because were it not for them, the big guys wouldn't make ANY good beer, period.

The only beer on that entire AB list that I enjoy is the Red Hook; and they are only distributing partners.

We have a lot of micro-breweries here in Utah. I think mainly due to the fact that are laws limit us to 3.2 beer and the micros are allowed to sell 4.0. Also, our beer selection sucks! I know Squatters has many awards for their beers... Has anybody else seen anything from Squatters out of state?

Rogue is really good, but it's overpriced around here. Why would I pay $9.99 for a six pack of Rogue when I can get a sixer of Deschutes for $6.99? If it was superior I guess I could understand, but it's not.
The cool thing about Rogue is if you go into one of their Breweries, they have an insane collection of ales on tap.

I don't know if Squatters distributes out of Utah. I got my lesson on Beer in Utah from a guy at Squatters though. The sad thing is that Squatters can't sell some of its award winning beers in Utah at all. Basically, at least one example he showed me, the batch they brewed for the award winning brew had to be altered to conform to the goofy laws of Utah.
And, if I remember correctly, the alcohol content limit pertains to draft, but anything above 4.0 has to be in a bottle, where after I think they may go up to 6% alcohol content maximum for a beer.
All I know is that after about an hour talking to that guy, I realized I could never live in that state. I'll stick to visiting.

Though Star -vs- Club... Star is the main beer of Ghana. Call it the "Budweiser" if you will. It tastes like ass. Club is the lesser known beer and appears on tap at various venues, but people rarely drink it. It is one of the best beers I've ever had. I was working with a guy who said he loved Star, and when I asked if he ever tried Club he said he didn't because Star was pretty damn good. Well I bought a pitcher of Club and he tried it then... and when he took that first sip the expression on his face looked like he had been living a lie. He was simply amazed at how much smoother and cleaner Club tasted (it is also a bit on the sweet side, which I like). Moral of the story, adventurous people take risks and usually win. Until adventurous people no longer exist microbreweries will always be around.

I like micro brew beer, out here two major ones are magic hat and long trail (both in VT) and i guess sam adams was at one time a micro brewery (outside boston) but if im drinking all night with my friends A) its a good deal more expensive around here B) a lot of it is more filling.
I dont know about you guys but in CT even for the micro brews from VT (not as much distribution cost) its 8 or 9 bucks for a 6 pack. my buddy at school in VT is lucky you can buy those growler jugs for like 7 or 8 bucks and you bring the jug back they fill it back up for 3 or 4 bucks.
in middle school, I drank captain morgans didnt like beer, sophmore year switched to jameson, junior year, learned that i LOVED beer. Drank budwiser when it was still cheap, splerged for longtrail, magic hat, newcastle, sierra, and red stripe. now for some reason its more expensive and if im going to pay that much ill pay a little more and get good beer. used to be like 22-25 bucks for a 30 pack of bud now its $30+. As for booze I have softened up, I drink Jager, Dr. McGilicutties (spelled wrong), or sometimes splerge for the oil slick (shot half jager half Goldshlager. oh yeah and every once and a while who doesnt get some blackberry brandy when they are out skiing or snowmobiling in the winter...

Hahaha! You got it! Actually, you have to go to their restaurant/brewery to try a lot of their great brews. Their award-winning IPA is 6.0% and I think if I remember right, they have to bottle it, sell it to the State Liquor Store, buy it back, THEN they can sell it. Or something weird like that. Only in the liquor store or the brewery can you try it, though.
Utah's goofy laws SUCK. But, if you like the outdoors, it's a great place. This is why I drive out of state to pick up my beer.

Liquor stores here are state owned and have shitty hours. So if I do not get my beer stocked and I run out on a Sunday... I'm screwed. Sometimes I have to drink that AB shit; and since it's 3.2%, it's like drinking soda.

Sometimes it gets out of hand... I'll get used to our 4.0 micro, go to Wendover (Nevada border-town with lots of Casinos) and drink as much as I usually do without realizing the difference in alcohol content. This happened last weekend and I ended up with a 2-day hangover. The casino started serving Fat Tire (New Belgium is another favorite brewer of mine; also not available here), which happens to be another favorite, so I drank a lot of them.

Actually, they're popular largely because it is "easy to drink" and have little flavor. Sadly, most people drink beer for the sake of drinking. Many people drink the beer that is most readily available, or least offensive to the palate.
If you look at the two primary ingredients responsible for flavoring beer, barley and hops, and you compare how much are used per barrel, you'll find that about 80% of beer sold in the US (the macro-brews) have about 10% of the amount of the same ingredients used in the micro-brews produced in the US.
The masses don't drink beer for the flavor. It's an acquired taste, much like wine, and if people were willing to venture out of the familiar, they'd likely find some beers they enjoy.
So, yes, people do drink what tastes like ass (or, more accurately, doesn't taste like much of anything at all). They just don't know anything else. They're consumers driven by marketing. It happens.

Actually, ALL alcohol has to be sold through the state run warehouse. So even stuff they keg, they have to sell to the warehouse, then buy it back. The bad part is that they can't just do this on paper, they PHYSICALLY have to sell it to them, then buy it back. And the warehouse isn't even REFRIGERATED!!!!
There could be an exception for brewpubs and beer at 3.2 or less, but I don't recall. I was so horrified at that point the details got foggy.

Blue laws are still pretty common ... and outdated ;)
Minnesota and Colorado are both the same that you can't buy alcohol on Sunday. How late tends to vary from county to county.
Either way, those laws need to go away.
The one thing that I actually do not support is grocery stores selling alcohol. I like states that don't allow it better because I tend to find that the Liquor stores have a better selection and as good, if not better prices, than in states where alcohol is commonly sold in Grocery stores.
Granted, my sample sizes are small, primarily comparing Minnesota and Colorado (Liquor stores, not grocery stores) and Michigan and California (grocery stores, few "liquor" stores).
I've lived in Minnesota, Michigan and Colorado, and visited California often enough to notice a trend.
Just one person's observations.

Exactly. I usually enjoy a beer a day. Definitely not going to get wasted over it, I just enjoy a good beer. I hate going to parties where people have piles of Natural Light; I find it a waste of beer. I actually took some friends to Squatters the other night and had them try the sampler. Pilsner, Hefe, Pale Ale, and Stout. Out of 3 guys, only one of them liked the different beers. The other guys ended up ordering fcking Apricot Hefe; which is a good beer, but come on. I was almost embarrassed. There are not many people that really enjoy a good beer.

Yes, I absolutely hate that! I think it was only the beer over 3.2% (or local micro over 4.0%) they had to do that little trick with because it is considered a "heavy beer." But yeah... Beer in our liquor stores is not stored refrigerated! Plus the sin tax. So plan on bringing lots of money and not drinking it until the next day.
