Ok, with less than 2,000 miles on my car, one of my beloved RE92's got pwnt last night. I have a huge slice/gash on the sidewall of the tire. Pics aren't necessary cause I know it's not repairable.

I'm supposed to be leaving on a little mini-roadtrip this morning and I'm looking to get this taken care of ASAP, hence the "quick" help needed.

1. I'm assuming that if I chose to go with another RE92 I can just replace the one since they're such low mileage. Does anyone think the circumference will really be off enough after only 2k to cause a problem?

2. I have been wanting to switch over to a robust winter tire (Dunlop M3) and Sullivan Tire has the M3 at $192 per tire (which I would need 4 of) or I could get one RE92 for $250.

What should I do!!!???!!!

I can't remember where to lookup, but they can check the tread depth of your remaining tires, if they are down to a "Certain" point .. then you have to replace all of them. My guess, with 2,000 miles you should be ok.

Put on the winter tires. You want them before the bad weather hits - do it now. Replace your RE92 at your convenience over the winter and save an extra installation/balancing fee.

Go with the snows. You were most likely already going to do it anyway and this just makes the decision final.

Then you can determine over the winter if you want to pay a premium tire price for a mediocre one at best to replace the RE92. You could maybe pick up somebody's low milage OE take off over the winter, but by spring you may have decided to get a set of high performance summer tires and even new wheels.

Thanks for the replies guys, I was leaning towards the winter tires and the cost difference sealed the deal. Might as well mod when the opportunity arises! The gf is also taking this opportunity to throw snows on her Yaris so Matt @ Sullivan Tire offered us 10% off which helps out... tire should be around $170 per + install fees and road hazzard program (half price snow/summer tire changes, complete tire coverage for first year, pro-rated based on tread depth following)

Will post up the final details and review when I get back on Sunday.

Thank!

For your future reference, the "allowable" difference in circumference is 0.25", according to Subaru.

depending on what the cost is for mounting/balancing 2wice a year when you swap tires (even at 1/2 price) ....... might be worth it to get some inexpensive aftermarket wheels when spring rolls around or just buy another set of stockers if you like them ...... sold mine with 2k on them with tires for $450 just for reference.

If you decide to go back to the RE92s for the summer just buy a used one with roughly the same mileage off this forum, Nabisco or one of the Scion tC forums. The '05 tC came with the exact same tire as our car - at least, it's the same brand, model and size. 06-up tCs come with Yokos. You shouldn 't have any trouble finding one cheap:)

Wow, is that true? .25" is like 8/32...that's almost 80% thread :icon_conf

0.25" circumference, so you only get a little over 1/32 leeway on tread depth (radius).

0.25" Circumferential difference, not diameter!

Delta C = .25"

Delta R = Delta C / (2*pi) = 0.0397" which is just slightly greater than 1/32" of tread wear.

edit: whoops... hahaha, I had the thread open from this morning and forgot to check for updates... lol.

Instead of continuing this thread I will be posting up my review of the tires at my home thread here---> Underdog's '06 GRP Sedan 5MT (http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46024)

It's not up there yet, but rest assured... it will be!

Thanks mods, I'm all set with this one.

that seems to happen alot with the re92s. is the gash right near the rim line?

^ Well, the gash was pretty much tangent from the rim to the tread cutting the entire sidewall. I imagine it was the spot that bore the brunt of the wheel catching the inside of the manhole (as I was going 20mph and it was gushing water).
