View Full Version : Updated European Legacy (wagon lovers drool)

Tide

The Subaru Legacy refresh that debuted in Japan this May has made it to Europe. New front and rear fascias distinguish the '07 Legacy from its predecessor and dramatically change the car's appearance. The nose section is all-new, featuring new, more sculpted headlamps, a pronounced "V" crossbar in the grille, and very racy-looking front spoilers (on the 3.0R Spec.B cars). Moving aft, both the sedan and wagon get a chrome dress-up strip that runs the width of the car. The Spec.B wagon also gets roof-mounted rear spoiler.

I still want to know if the interior trim is finally real aluminum which it looks like, or still the pseudo plastic-metal.

That sh!t is dope...NOw I definitely need to trade mine when they get here. Those wheels look like they came off an Audi S8...come to think of it the nose looks somewhat Audi-ish as well.

Just answered my own question :icon_mad:

"The '07 Legacy and Outback's prestige interior is further refined with aluminium-effect strips running the full width of the fascia, flowing out 'wing-like' from the centre panel. This accentuates the width but also cocoons the driver."

So let me get this straight...they included HIDs with pop-up washers, and electrically-folding door mirrors but they cant put in real metal trim?

I am sorry, while I like this car, the next one I buy I want to hold onto for a while, and fauxluminum aint gonna cut it.

The sad thing, is for the same price this 08 will prob be, EVERYONE else offers metal trim (Acura TSX, TL, Mazda 6, etc. etc.)

I like the paddle shifter with a 20-40 % faster shift. Also does the rev-match thing automatically by blipping the throttle between shifts . Front fascia is yummy, but it looks better on the wagon.

I think I dig everything but the rims - a little too bling for my tastes.

The wagon looks good, but the sedan is really starting to look like a higher-end GT now. On the rear 3/4 shot, I could have been looking at a small Aston Martin - IMHO of course ;)

Don't get too excited, guys. The car's on sale here in Australia & to quote a mate's feedback (which I happen to wholeheartedly agree with):

2 hours of spot the difference. Dare I even begin?

Hey MY07 owners, the car is great, marvellous, but....

What has happened to the seat's lateral support (in *all* models)
Why does the trim highlight stop halfway down the console
What's with the ashtray
What's with the different, scratchy carpet in the wagon luggage area
Whats with the chrome strip melding with the rear badge
Why does the rear seat leather appear to have been fitted by a scorned and drunken Lada employee
If they have fixed the oil problems, why include dipstick wipes
If running in is with mineral oil, why include a bottle of synthetic top-up
Why does the better integrated centre console look less integrated with an slight drop in plastic quality overall
What use are two bloody great cupholders. The MY05/6 cubby is more versatile and just as effective
What's with a big chrome circle around the gearstick
Why spend money developing door grips the feel rougher and tackier than those already there
How tf do you clean the inner rims of the B-spec alloys without removing the wheels
How does the 3.0R look with brushed Al+++ highlights against ivory leather http://www.mrtrally.com.au/forums/icon_smile_sad.gif
Why does the 2.5 GT take over a second lore to reach 100km/h

And more:

Steering wheel reach - thanks!
Electric seats and memory - thanks!
Xenons - thanks!

Just puzzling why they then have to make changes (like the circlic interior, ashtray and seat bolsters and in fact the whole console/highlight strip design) which cheapen it slightly.

BTW I didn't like the ergonomic dog's breakfast wheel or feel of the paddles much - neither the palpable ridges on the back or the action which felt like it had too much stiction. It lacks the well-oiled, subtle resistance of the sportshift changer.

Less is more, FHI.

Hate the wheels (heavy looking and heavier on the scales). The front fascia is bland. Grill is heavier than the wheels and the chrome strip across the width of back is pure Cadillac. Less is more, sometimes, people.

V grill needs to be simplified instead of more accented. Lights in Rear Bumper? Totally not neccessary. It's like advertising...they start off at good ideas but when they finally get produced, it is not as great.

Overall, I welcome the exterior updates. It looks like it borrows a lot of lines / elements from the BMW 5-series and a Saab or two.

I actually like that grille on the OB. It makes it look more substantial. In fact, I like the current USA OB's grille over the current Legacy because of the "more substantial" grille.

No chrome strip on the back of sedan! Woohoo!

But I do agree with most of the negatives here. Red reflector on bumper could be more horizontal vs. vertically oriented.

Pics of the interior would help. Although those in Australia aren't painting a good picture for the refreshed interior, I'd like to see it myself to judge it.

Does anyone know if and when this refresh will be introduced States-side?

Actually, the wheels look like big, heavy Audi A8 wheels, not S8. (See pics attached.) In other words, blech on the wheels. Not right on this car.

I just don't know...I like the bodywork overall. I just worry Subaru is trying too hard, moving too fast to try and play the role of a BMW/Audi alternative brand. It's like they're starting to lose their identiy a bit.

09-23-2006, 03:09 PM
Hmmm...I don't know.

The Ray's wheel has 10 spokes, like the Subie wheel, but the spokes on the Subie wheel are thicker, like the Audi wheel. The Ray's wheel is sporty looking, while the Subie wheel is trying to be more elegant. Subaru apparently has a six-spoke alloy as their sporty alternative (see pics.)

The 10 spoke design isn't bad, but IMHO it doesn't look right on a Legacy. It's no different than when people fit Audi A8 wheels to their A4's or even A3's; it just isn't a good wheel+car match.

The more pics I see elsewhere of the different 2007's, though, the more I really like what Subaru has done. Didn't take me long to warm up to it!

Lord help me if they bring the STi wagon here - I think I'd be saying tearful goodbyes to my S4 soon after.

I don't know what TSX you've been looking at, but my wife's TSX has plastic "metal-look" trim. It's either a thin coating of metal on the plastic (like many plastic "chrome" parts get) or metallic paint. The TL is the same way. In fact, I think almost all of the cars have plastic metal trim. Real metal would be overly expensive and potentially unsafe.

i beg to differ...although i've been wrong B4, but the TL does have metal trim running down both sides of the radio/hvac. by touch, the trim feels like metal and holds temp like metal. i will try to eat a piece tonight, and if i get that awful feeling...like when you hit a piece of gum wrapper with your filling...than we'll know it's metal.

The trim in our TSX looks like metal, feels like metal, etc, but it's really plastic. Most of the "chrome" parts on other cars are really plastic too. They just have a metallic coating.

If it really was raw aluminumn, it would need some sort of finish (or frequent buffing) to keep looking all nice and satiny. Real aluminum would show fingerprints, smudges, etc... quite easily unless it were anodized, and the satin finish Acura uses is definitely not anodized.

The grill borrows a feel from Acura.
The wheels are Mazdaspeed.
The rear chrome strip is Chevy Malibu.
The rear reflectors feel like Acura TL.
The grill on 08 Outback is ... something else.

It reminds me of Hyundai - each year their cars look like some other brand. What Subaru needs is a solid brand image. These 3-piece grills on some cars, Forresters that don't match anything else, Tribecca Saabs...

Where's the family trait? How does one *know* its a Subie?
The star badge? Nope, that gets replaced with L7 sometimes...

If you don't have solid brand recognition, you miss out on brand sales. I think Subaru suffers greatly in this area. Sure they can create good looking cars. So can kit-car designers.. and in the end it's a just a little odd, maybe quaint, or "exotic" if you're lucky.

Mind you it's getting better, keep up the good work Subaru and keep pointed in a solid direction. Don't give up all the past - there's some heritage value in there, somewhere.

Cheers
Scott

I'm not quite sure, I got lost in the expansiveness that is the internet. After months of searching and fighting with creatures that speak various tongues of code I have finally found myself back to the homeland. Through the time I have learned many new great skills, these skills will be important in the time that lays ahead and I look forward to continuing the quest.

Hmmm. Since USDM got the SI-drive, updated stereo, fold-down seats in sedan and updated wheels in GT, don't you think SOA may not ever follow with the 2007 JDM/EDM updates in the USDM at all?

Just to keep cost down, they may decide to keep making Legacies/Outbacks as they are. Point is - Outbacks sell well as they are, and SOA does not believe in Legacy much at all anyway.

Although the rumors about H6-3.0 in Legacy for USDM are there...

I think it's hard to say, either way, until the cards fall. But, to argue your point, it may not be efficient to SOA's bottom line to have two slightly different assembly procedures for the same car model, based on ramp-up and ramp-down procedures, logistics, etc.

We'll see what happens in '08.
