The HU is a Clarion HXD2 (its a DRZ something or the other in the USA).

Progress is slow as its winter here for us and its been raining - haven't been able to do much sanding. Hope to make some progress this weekend.

A couple of test fit pics:

Need to fill and sand a bit more (left and right sides dont curve in the same) and i might get rid of the aluminium piece just above the climate control unit - it took me a whole weekend to shape that thing but now it looks out of place with all the chrome accents...

This is beautiful work.
I had a B4 and now have a Spec B; I think the B4's HU was based on the MX406 (for example, the user's guide says it had the twin Burr Brown DACs), a McIntosh badged separate amp on the floor, and there were 7 speakers if you include upper tweeters as separate. The new one looks like it has the same Clarion as yours including presumably NOT a Mac amp within dash, and 14 (meaning 212) speakers.
Seems to me I would get the best sound if I could marry the old (probably Mac) HU to all those speakers via (if I can get one from the states) a MCC406M which gives 4x50 and 100x2.
What do you think?

If you upgraded the HU to the one from a B4 and get a MCC406M to work with it (ie inputs) then your std speakers would be the weakest link.

I think it would be easier to just rip the whole std system out and replace it with even an 'average' quality aftermarket one if you wanted something better than std.

Fair comment - but I've emailed McIntosh to see if it's possible. My old aftermarket system - Kenwood HU - Kicker 4x40 - Soundstream SPL 65 front and 60 rear - certainly rocked more than either std sytstem, but I'd have to say the B4 McIntosh was a cleaner more accurate sound, if underpowered (4x23, 1x 60 - I have no idea how they reached those specs!). The new Maclarion has better bass but sounds typically Japanese electronic, not natural. Depending on the crossovers, I might just plug in the Soundstreams as the 61/2" in the doors; they are more efficient than the Macs and go lower.
