Hi people  Newbee here, well i have to say i am glad i found this place, i have been a member of FordTruckWorld.com for a few years that has helped me build a show truck in the past year that i shipped to Europe, now that i am done with that project i figured it was time to replace my wifes 1997 Outback Limited, it had 37K miles on it and it was running great, but one look at this new Outback and it was instant love  After i drove the new turbo i wanted one more then my wife, she was actually looking at a Honda, i was the salesman for three days trying to convince her why this is the car she wants. Now that we have the new toy  I can start modding away. So far i put in a Hella HID system and the lighting improvement is incredible, Subaru did a great job at the projectors, the cut off point is incredible, don't be surprised if we will see a HID option on the very same lamps. Then i put in some very nice tailpipe tips from Part America for $20 each, the look like they have a resonator in them and are 100% stainless. I also took out the intake resonator. My next mod is up-pipe sometime next week and maybe a BOV. Thank you for having me!

Dan.

Cool stuff.

This is a debateable topic, but I believe you will lose a little performance by removing the resonator. It tunes the standing wave pattern in the intake to boost pressure going into the engine. In reality, I believe the tuned waves just compensate for the friction losses in the intake, but either way I think you will lose performance by taking it out. So I'm curious, what is your reasoning?

thanks,
Craig

So did you disable the DRL's? If not, you'll get a very short life from your HID bulbs.

Post pics of the lights...and a link to where you bought them.

Oh, and welcome to the forums. Nice car.

c_hunter, after reading everyones positive opinion on the resonator i figured why not try it, I'm not sure if what you are stating is true but i do feel a bit more response and i can hear the turbo spool now, i am considering going with a K&N filter soon.

docsmile71 I did not disable the DRL's as I'm not sure how to do that, my 2003 Navigator has the same kit in the fog lamps and are on all the time when i drive, i put about 60k miles a year on my Gator and the bulbs are still good after 16 months.
My friends kit however is starting to flicker after about 6 months for the first 30 minutes so i think his is starting to go. The replacement bulbs cost me $85 a set so its not too expensive to replace. I will post some pics this weekend of them on, i get my kits & bulbs from a friend in Japan :)

I am trying to figure out how the lams are adjusted because my right high beam is to the left and low and the projector is also lower then the right side, does anyone have a clue?

If no adjustments had been made prior to installing the xenon bulbs, etc. . . might want to make sure all four bulbs are secured flat to the back of the headlight housing. Sometimes when putting them back in, they can be off by just a little bit when they're secured, and that can make them point in funny directions.

I only say so because the two that are off appear to be completely independent of each other, suggesting an issue that could be common to all bulbs in question. :)

Question about HID in the legacy/outback... I'm a lighting newbie!

1. Do they DRL's have enough 'juice' to engage the HID's?
2. What happens to your highbeams?
3. Did you replace just the two regular bulbs?

Thanks,

Mal.

There is no part number, The bulb type is H7, you could use the stock D2S bulb from any car but you need to bend the small wire that holds the bulb to fit that type of bulb and use the Hella third gen ballast, these are the ones with the igniter built in them.

The DRL's did not have enough juice to start the ballast, i then installed a relay, tapped in the one wire from the battery side of the projector, pink wire outside the headlight, ground, and wire to the battery with a fuse. High beams remain unchanged, they are independent and will not turn off the projector when when you turn high beams on. I just replace the projector bulbs with the H7 D2S bulb. I also replaced the fog-lamps and high beams with Sylvania Silver-Stars.

I strongly recommend any type of electrical mods you do to always take your time, think it threw really good and ALWAYS SOLDER YOUR CONNECTIONS and use the best electrical tape or shrink tubes you can get.

The cutoff line is excellent, no glare to incoming traffic, they are bright as hell thou, every sign lights up now on the road, i don't recommend anything over 6000K, i have had the 9000K and did not like them because they had a greener look to them and they are not as bright as the lower K spectrum.

Another MOD in today :P

Got the Turbo-XS BOV in, they don't have one for the 05 yet but i modified the plate and worked like a charm, use the dremel to cut some of the engine cover and it turned out great, sure call it eye candy or whatever.... but for $100 it was worth it for me, i just love the swiiiiiish sound :D The BOV its fully adjustable from no sound to extreme loud.

How do you have the BOV setup, i.e. full atomo, full recirc, atomo/recirc?

Ohhh also, i had the windows tinted, 18% all rear and 38% front. titanium tint, blocks 99.99% UV rays, it is the best on the market with life time warranty.

I'm not sure what that means! I guess its automatic :D

If turbo-xs does not have a BOV for the 05, then which model did u use? BTW, looks great.

The BOV its fully adjustable from no sound to extreme loud.

No, this BOV is *not* adjustable. What you are doing is adjusting how much pressure it takes to make the BOV release the pressure. If you make it go "no sound" then you are pushing the excess pressure BACK to your turbo and stalling the compressor. This is VERY hard on the turbo and will destroy it.

You MUST make the BOV vent fully to prevent compressor stall. You should contact TurboXS too see how many washers you need to put in there for proper operation.

Personally, if you do not understand what you are doing, then do not do it.

This is from their site....

Blow Off Valve Type-H-RFL:

A new larger billet aluminum body and a beefier piston ensures the valve remains smooth under the most demanding circumstances. This valve relieves compressor pressure surge caused by changing gears or backing off the throttle quickly and is designed for turbo charged engines running up to 25 psi boost.

I quoted what you said in your own post, that's where you said it was "adjustable from no sound to extreme loud".

When properly adjusted for your boost application, you won't have any problems with compressor surge. But it is adjustable for how much PSI you are running.

All I'm saying is that you need to be sure that you have it adjusted correctly for how many PSI you are running. If you don't, it may damage your turbo.

DAFTEK

I agree with what your saying, sure if you close it all the way it makes sense that the pressure has no where to go but back in the turbo, i don't disagree with you on that, opened all the way they say it is at 25psi, i have it turned 3/4 up this way i figured am just above the max boost my turbo will ever produce so its on the safe side, i believe stock will only do about 12psi.

BTW I'm not trying to be a smart @#%!$^% Any suggestions i would appreciate. :)

Hell yeah, i can't wait to meet one of those on the line. He'll still be spinning his tires when i'm 100 feet off the line.

5.0 Mustangs aren't even a challenge anymore. When I was in high school, everyone thought they were the car to beat- which I did repeatedly in my Trans Am. The WRX ate them up too. And I'm sure my XT will as well.
