Does the rearview mirror have a compass and/or temperature on it? :?:

What about a built in garage door opener thingamabob??? you know built usually in the visor, or bellow the mirror or by the moonroof switch?

I personally think it would be a nice feature, the built-in garage door openers that at least one mfg calls Homelink.

Temperature is just below the storage space that is DVD Nav/gagues in other markets on the left side. I believe that's when the trip computer functions are as well.

Cool!
Now back to the compass...

This picture from SubieGal's site shows a Legacy (not sure if it's sedan or wagon) without the compass on the mirror. I wonder if that means we won't be getting one. To me it's a cheap navigation system. :P
This picture below of the rearview mirror is from a Subaru WRX STi. Is it stock? If it is or isn't, where can we get one?

I know this is a little off topic, but doesn't that look like joe dirt in the mirror?

Axis, that mirror is the optional Auto-Dimming Rear-View Mirror with Compass unit. Should be able to get at certain online vendors or your local dealership.

Cool! And yes since you mentioned it it does look like Joe Dirt. What's he doing in a Legacy??

Actually I believe that's Mr. Bob Holland himself in the rearview mirror. :)

Considering the pic is from SubieGal's site, SOA paid for a few people to go to the detroit show, RSHolland- Bob Holland, SubieGal, the Juice from Edmunds.com and I'm not sure who all else to go to Detroit. They were basically all in the same group.

I puposely didn't order it- I'll get an aftermarket one another time- with red lighting.

Homelink may be a particular brand or something because Subaru has plans to offer an Auto Dimming Mirror/Compass with Homelink. Maybe sometime in early August.

(sigh) Homelink isn't crap. Jedimaster, yours is a good question, and points out (mind you, this is a side track) how something can become part of the vernacular, without people really knowing what it is.
Homelink is, for people who need to use it, a most excellent innovation that allows users to program things like garage door openers to buttons on the car's console. So rather than actually having the garage door opener, you'd just press the appropriate button on the rear-view mirror. Very slick, and awfully convenient. It's the kind of value-added feature that doesn't cost much (probably just a licensing fee...the tech should be cheap by now), but adds much to a car.

It isn't literally crap. If it tacks on additional cost, however, then I say "no thanks."

Frig that. I want something really cool integrated into my mirror- like scrolling internet news or something.

FWIW, the Autodimming mirror with compass is part of the Popular Equipment Group #1 (the other part is the upgraded security system). It can also be had as a stand alone accesory.
I like it so far.

Have you driven yours at night yet? If you do, let us know how well the autodimming works.

Ordered it on mine, too. 3-5 weeks left. <sigh>
If my typing starts messing up it is because of the twitches.

If it's the same thing as on the WRX, then it works very well.

I'm betting that it's the same part as the WRX's, so it should work identically.

I called this company and they said you can have your dealer order a homelink/auto-dim mirror through them and have the dealer install it. I'm not sure if you could get one any other way. The rep said the price for the cheapest one is around $250, but I don't know if there would be any dealer mark-up, and what the dealer would charge for install.
But it would almost be worth it not to have to hang a garage door opener on your visor.

I have. It seems to fade to dim. Either that or is works so subtly that I don't really notice it until it's dim. I like it very much.
Also, whatever material is in the mirror makes all the headlights behind me look like HID's.

My mom's non-subaru is the same way regarding the HID-looking deal. It's weird..

When it dims, does it have a sort of greenish tone? I know in my mom's van it does this, and I find it quite annoying, so I turned off the feature. Also, is it possible to turn off auto-dimming?
*Jedimaster*

One thing I didn't like about the mirror is that it defaults to being on. So if it's a really bright day, the mirror will dim. My GTP defaulted to off, so you could turn it on at night and during the day all was normal.

You can turn off the auto-dimming, although the question then becomes why have one at all? If it's like the WRX, it's more a bluish/black tone, which is why all cars appear to have HIDs when the mirror is doing its thing.

I had to have this option, especially for the low price, as most autodimming mirrors are $300-400 from the factory.

I just picked up my new GT last night and found the auto dimming mirror to work beautifully. I couldn't really tell you what "color" it was when tinted, I certainly didn't notice it anyway. I highly recommend these things, they make a huge difference in driver comfort at night.

It is the same auto dimming mirror you see in the all the subaru models. Just still your old one and switch it out with your legacy. Install is wicked easy.

The factory plug is located in the headliner. In my WRX is was under the dome lights. The only tools you need is a philips screwdriver, and maybe a nosepicker (small dental pick) to get the clear cover off the dome light. I would say it should take no more than 15-20 minutes to install. Than you have to calibrate the compass by first driving in a couple of circle and then prgramming the right zone. All the info is in the manual.
The best prices I have seen is at:

Not yet- I'm going to wait until I can get a wiring diagram of what's under the headliner. I want to wire the map light to come on with the dome light.

Let us know how that goes... I'm sure it would be a nice to have.
Wouldn't you have to put in a diode to prevent current from running between the map lights (both of them) and the dome light? Don't diodes dissipate current by generating heat? Would that be a problem in the headliner?
