Not an April fools joke! http://images.nasioc.com/forums/images/smilies/banana.gif It's about time for another suby drive up to Sedona (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=952612&page=1&pp=25#). We can drive up and meet at the Basha's in Sedona like last year (there is a Subway there for the hungry http://images.nasioc.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif ), then we trickle back down through Jerome(careful of cops there) and stop at Mingus Mountain for some pics at the rest stop. We will meet at 8:30am at Forced Air Technologies since it's right off of the I-17 and Cactus and the parking lot is big. Here is the google map: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=2818+...,0.026052&hl=en (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=2818+W.+Cactus+Road,+Phoenix+AZ&spn=0.017251,0.026052&hl=en)
From there at 9:00 am we will get on the I-17 north . Here are the directions from FAT to Basha's/Sedona in order: 1. Head east from W Cactus Rd - go 0.1 mi, 2. Turn left at N Black Canyon Fwy aka. I-17 - go 0.1 mi, 3. Take the I-17 N ramp to Flagstaff - go 88 mi, 4. Take the AZ-179 exit 298 to Sedona/Oak Creek Canyon - go 0.2 mi, 5. Turn left at AZ-179 - go 15 mi, 6. Turn left at AZ-89-ALT - go 1.9 mi, 7. Turn right at Coffee Pot Dr - go 0.1 mi
The weather should be perfect, and there are some nice twisties on the way back through Jerome to Mingus Mountain. As always, Let's be safe on this drive and no accidents or ticket's please!! There may be kids and pets on this drive http://images.nasioc.com/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif ! Here are some links from past drives that might have pic content in them. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=834613 (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=834613)

Why don't you go North through Wickenburg and Prescott then over Mingus, and return home via I17... much nicer drive up (though longer), and quicker return trip.
I may try to join in either way...

Quick question, should I try to get an AP prior to, with no other mods on the car, or should I wait till I can do AP, UP, DP, etc., etc.?

You can gain about 50 ft/lb and 35 hp with NO other mods.
I am getting tuned with ECUTeK by DynoComp next week. I am gonna install a DP though. They expected more than 50/35 stock though, so I should gain around 65-70ft/lb and 50hp or more. I am being conservative on what they were expecting. Its definately worth it. I am gonna check out how well they wune with the AP as opposed to ECUTeK, and go from there on what Im gonna go with.
Ill keep you informed. They can also set you up for a tune about 2 days after you call. And I am being charge 900 for a tune AND the ECUTeK software. its 225 or so for just a tune. They do a GREAT job, too.
Look at their upgrades they do. Legacy GT is down near the midpage or bottom

Plus those numbers for the Legacy GT were in their words, "A very conservative tune. Its just when customers send their ECU and we reflash it. With an actual custom tune you are looking at much higher numbers on a stock car."
So with any other mods, raise the numbers even more. I am being tuned for my Crucial DP (with no cat), and my AEM intake. Ill post up my numbers, and if anybody wants to tag along, Ill let you guys know when the tune is gonna be after I call them in a few.

I'd be interested, still a bit confused on the whole deal, reflash, warranty, blah blah. I know I want more power though.

I had an AP .. and sold it for my rims ... the AP comes with some nice vanilla maps, but I was a bit concerned that it was tuned specifically for my car. No one in AZ at the time did any protune for it. I do know and from what I have read, the service shops can not tell your car has been flashed. I am up front with my service dept so when I do decide to go the ECUTek route, I'll let them know.

Do you go to Steven Jory Subaru? They are awesome people, and they are gonna be fine with me reflashing ECUTeK. Plus they cant tell unless they hook up the car to their OBD reader thing or whatnot.
I dont ever trust using somebody elses maps. I feel completely unsafe doing that. Every car is way different. My turbo civic took about 23 times the amount of fuel that other turbo civics same year, model, and kit took. I would ALWAYS get a custom tune, plus you get a LOT more power out of it.

So the ECUtek is a permanent change to the ecu (permanent in that I couldn't go back to stock at home)? That price seems fairly reasonable, but if I don't have some of the other bits, is it even worth doing?

That is correct .. the nice thing with the AP ... and Surge now has the Protune software, you can have differen maps loaded on the AP that you can load on your car. You can also revert it back to stock. They also have a fuel mileage map, valet map, etc.
With ECUTek I don't think you can have different maps.

Correct. You cannot switch maps with the ECUTeK, nor can you switch to economy mode (cant switch maps, same thing).
After talking to Subaru today, they told me with the ECUTeK reflash, what will happen if I have an ECU recall. Basically if they have to do anything to my ECU for whatever reason, I will lose the settings for the tune. SO I will have to get it done again. I just hope there arent any recalls. Working good so far, lol.
DynoComp has not tuned many cars with the AP, and they feel they can do a much better job with the ECUTeK, which I why I am using that. Plus the techs at Subaru wont be able to tell you were tuned (other than driving the car or hooking up the ECU to their computer thing) since there is no little control unit. They alter your stock settings. So they can control every function of the ECU for a complete proper tune.
Also if you ever want to get the AP installed, you will have to get a new ECU. You cannot use the AP on top of the altered ECU with the ECUTeK reflash.
Hope this info helps. I am still going with ECUTeK, due to a better tune from DynoComp. I am highly confident in their work. Ill post my numbers tomorrow if I have time. At 9am is my tune.

Nice let us know! What mods do you have again? CAI and DP?
05BluePearlGT
03-22-2006, 05:14 PM
yeah, catless shorty DP, and CAI. I will be running about 17psi as well. So thats where the big gain will come. Of course the DP will help too. Thats why Im expecting around 60-70ft/lb gain at least. That will be a very nice gain on my butt dyno. But of course Ill post the real numbers, lol.
They say when a customer sends them their ECU, they reflash it with a conservative tune, and the gain is approx 50 ft/lb, and 35hp. Thats not bad stock. So with the mods and a custom tune, they are telling me to expect a LOT more. Stock, they said to expect a lot more than that. So the DP and intake should do good. They say any intake that sits in the fender area where the airbox silencer is (any CAI is that way), than it is fine to run, and easy to tune for. They said SRI's are terrible. So Im glad I can keep the intake. It helped with spool up a lot, IMO. I can also step on the gas around corners and lose traction, where before, the car would lag on all corners for some reason (traction control?)

03-23-2006, 05:16 AM
Dyno Comp will tune AP if you have Street Tuner. It pushes the cost up a little, but then you have datalogging capability, the ability to fiddle with the maps yourself, and switch maps (econo, valet, etc.) I have spoken with them at length about this, and it's the route I'm goiing. (I have AP stg II now, and have all the parts for an STI swap, if I can ever get the time to install them...)

03-23-2006, 05:48 PM
i am very happy with my tune. It accelerates much smoother than before. I understand what people were saying about Subaru should have made the car this way stock. I am at 18-19psi, and gained about 60 ft/lb, and 25 whp. Pretty decent. It also holds boost to redline now. The power curve is so much better though, and thats the greatest difference.
I cant find my stupid camera usb to post my dyno sheets. Ill find it tonight hopefully. Ive been looking around.

I let my girl drive my car last night. We were heading up north on Cave Creek, north of the 101 in the desert. I told her to step on it all the way. She did like the third time I told her. She grabbed the wheels so hard, squinted her eyes, had the freakiest face on her, and said repeatedly, "Tell me when to stop, tell me whe to stop!" It was hilarious. It was the best boost Ive felt since the tune. With 5 people in the car, it is sooooooo much faster than just me in it before. Its nice! Im so happy.
Ill at least bring my dyno sheets on the cruise if I cant post them up. Since people will call me a noob and a liar! j/p lol. Thats how the civic websites are. Nobody believes anybodys dyno's. haha.

No need to dress up just wear comfy clothes
Thats what I say, but not her! She has to wear 100+ dollar pants everyday, and never wear the same outfit more than once or twice...sometimes. She is crazy with her clothes. But yeah, I had my 2 friends go.
It was a great time, I just wish I went to Wickenburg, and not back on the 17. I turned left, instead of right. Oh well. i still had a blast. Tons of nice cars. Way more fun than the civic cruises ive been on, lol.
